It is in undeniable trouble either way. It will only take 3 to 4 weeks after the restart for the fans to turn off. AFL footy without crowds is a stinker.

Similar Skeptic but that was with the St Kilda game. I didn't particularly enjoy watching the other games.

I might enjoy watching other games with ridiculously biased commentary, like the WA radio wannabes.

I actually think the captain and coach that holds up the Mickey Mouse cup will look angrier than when GT and Hayes did when they lifted the pre season cup.

And it's never been a game built on crowds. It's emblematic of Sydney though - crowds used to go when it was a tribal game and played at local grounds where it was easy for locals to travel to. Due to being an absolute debacle to travel anywhere further than 5 klms from your front door in Sydney - crowds seriously dropped off when most games were sent to the CBD (and their stadiums are horrendous - hence why they're knocking them down). When Newcastle is going ok - crowds go there; same at the new Paramatta stadium and Nth Qld.

As for the fake crowd noise - I'd much rather what the NRL did last weekend than R1 of the AFL when it was deathly silent. Zero atmosphere - and I have no desire to hear the umpires jibber/jabber or even worse - the players. There's nothing remotely interesting about hearing anything of that. The thing the fake crowd noise does for me is that it takes away my focus from the backdrop of empty stands (which looks awful).

I love AFL footy and generally only watch 1/2 doz games of NRL a year but credit where credit is due - that fake crowd noise really added to their coverage last weekend.

Disagree. Listen to the radio coverage - the background silence is awful.

But the small Adelaide crowd showed that even with a small crowd, their natural noise was better than the fake noise

It sounded like they were playing next to the ocean. No noise doesn't sound great either, but I prefer it to white nothing noise that doesn't go close to reflecting what is actually happening on the field.

For Collingwood games they should use recorded grabs from the primate section of the zoo. With a liberal injection of "Ball" thrown in.
