My favoite St Kilda players are: ?
Who are the players you love the most?
For me, it is totally based on my timeline/age...
Nicky Winmar
If I had to choose a top ten...(I was born '63, my Dad a Queenslander and a Rugby League native)
10. Ditteritch
9. Jeff Sarau
8. Barry Breen (I always loved pros who kept going in lesser roles as they aged, he played full back)
7. Spud (not a talent, but a soldier and a captain)
6. Burke (grunt, fighto! fighto!)
5. A special place for all those travelmen I loved...Tim Pekin, Peckett, Frankie Coghlan and a dozen others
4. Stewie Loewe
3. Barks. R.I.P. (through the darkest s***)
2. Harvey ..
1. Winmar (Nicky was the ants pants..

Winmar signed a personal autograph for me as a kid so he'll always have a special place in my heart and has to go at 1 as well -- difficult bloke not to love!
I swear I wrote out a longer reply then suddenly had to stop half way through because there's just too many Saints I've loved and want to ramble on about.
Love your inclusion of Peckett though he ALWAYS impressed me. He wasn't a star but he was one of the most consistent contributors I've seen and I loved the guy.

These are my favourite players - not necessarily the best, but the ones I hoped each week would do well, and who gave me the most satisfaction when they did. Some of them were champs, but in my eyes all of them had a certain je ne sais quoi
1. George Young
2. Tony Lockett
3, Robert Harvey
4. Darrell Baldock
5. Johnny Bonney- good player and ran the local milk bar!
6. Nicky Winmar
7. John McIntosh
8. Lenny Hayes

Yes Pllugger is enormous...maybe he is so large he is omnipotent..larger than the list and the world of lists itself....I came home and had a few.Special wrote: ↑Sat 30 May 2020 9:00amHow come our two greatest players, Plugger & Roo aren’t in your list?shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Sat 30 May 2020 1:05am Who are the players you love the most?

Two greatest players? Now that is a bit of a stretch. Plugger ,yes. But was Roo a greater player than Ian Stewart, Doc Baldock or Robert Harvey. I don't think so.Special wrote: ↑Sat 30 May 2020 9:00amHow come our two greatest players, Plugger & Roo aren’t in your list?shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Sat 30 May 2020 1:05am Who are the players you love the most?

John Bommey once played in the centre for Tasmania against Ian Stewart playing for Victoria and gave him a bath.George27 wrote: ↑Sat 30 May 2020 3:19pm These are my favourite players - not necessarily the best, but the ones I hoped each week would do well, and who gave me the most satisfaction when they did. John McIntosh was once rated one of the best three footballers in Australia.
So, good picks. I knew Kevin Roberts, the best left foot kick of a dropkick I ever saw.
I am also a big fan of Daryl Griffith and Jimmy Guyatt. Eric Guy and Alan Morrow from that era.

Rod Owens. What a waste of f****** talent. I went to America for a graduate diploma course in 1990 only to learn on my return he had been "swapped" to the Dees.
First played as a 16 year old and was regarded as a better prospect than Plugger . Poorly disciplined and injury prone.

Re: My favoite St Kilda players are: ?
These are the ones I went to watch to the point of complete obsession.
In order:
1 Nicky Winmar
2 Darrel Baldock
3 Robert Harvey
4 George Young
5 Robert Muir
6 Barry Lawrence
7 Aussie Jones
8 Nick dal Santo
9 Stewart Loewe
I'm not going to name number 10 -- coz I'd have to choose between Lenny Hayes, Trevor Barker, Plugger, Riewoldt, Cowboy Neale, Big Carl, Ross Smith, Burkey, .,,.. the list goes on and on
,,,, Val Perovic. I had a Val Perovic obsession for a while too.
Paul Callery, Lazar Vodovic, Matt Maguire, John McIntosh, Wow Jones.
There, That just about fills out my top favourite 22.
Except it's 23

Re: My favoite St Kilda players are: ?
I am still compiling my list but interesting that triple Brownlow medalist (2 at our club) Ian Stewart doesn't appear in any of the lists.
I know he went to another club but so did Plugger and Big Carl.

Re: My favoite St Kilda players are: ?
I was a wee lad when Stewart left and so was shocked an indignant as a seven year old might be. (Richmond was the team I hated most) All I know is we got some guy who didn’t amount to much for it.
My list reflects my age, so Ditterich and Breen etc., were very much impressionable choices, soaking up the hubris of the grown ups around me. Matter of fact, I didn’t see them do very much. Carl always showed flashes when he came back with the headband, but not really a key player. Barry Breen was probably just a bit player too, like a Shane Wakelin, not dissing the Wakelins as I actually liked them a lot and believed we should not have let them go.
I also missed Barry Lawrence, Glen Elliot, Wayne Judson, Garry Sidebottom, George Young, So many ....
Could have chosen Cowboy...as he was actually more impactful at the end.
Players of the early 00s, I guess are so recent, I am still processing them in my hall of fame.

Well, Stewart would rank in the top three, but was he anyone's favourite is an entirely different question/issue.Trev from the Bush wrote: ↑Mon 01 Jun 2020 9:57amAnd, in my opinion, is still the best footballer to pull on the red, white and black.
