Let's settle this .. which camp are you in?
Choose your RL camps ... the guy remains ReLevant.
Which camp are you in??
Declare your position once and for all ...
Judging by the discussions on this forum, there are 3 distinct RL camps .... (I've also thrown in a 4th "coach-neutral" point of view).
1. the camp with the balanced and considered view, who see RL's flaws as well as his contribution at the time, and considers the state of our list - when he arrived and as he left it - and gives him a pass mark (maybe at best?).
2. the RL who did more harm than good, who coached a strong list and gave us some cheap thrills (well, quite a few in 2009) but who ended up leaving us in a much worse state than when he arrived.
3. RL the hard-done-by coach, who we stupidly failed to re-sign; a great coach, who gave us a great era - who overachieved, if anything, given the strength of our list at the time - not as strong as GT's list, etc..
RL had bad luck, whereas GT (etc) had a charmed run, with players in the right age bracket, no injuries and no excuses ...
3.a. A great coach when coaching a strong team at its peak, but his game style was starting to become stale and he was an average to poor developer of lists - so he deserved to go, on the balance of things
4. A coach-neutral point of view!
All coaches are the same - they're basically all irrelevant, a nil-all-draw. Where there's a strong list, you'll find a good coach. Recruiters are the real heroes.
I choose camp 1 and 4.

Where is the one that says that Grant Thomas was the coach we should have stuck with instead of hiring that tosser flosser Lyin.
Otherwise I think 2 is the goer for me.

I think I’d go with 3, though I would also say I think it was getting time to move him on before he left anyway. I don’t think he’s ever shown he was great at developing lists (which was needed), and his game style was becoming less effective.
Was definitely a good coach who made some mistakes, a lot of supporters are soured by the way he left.

I didn't want to make it a GT vs RL thing - I only mentioned GT as he always seems to be mentioned alongside or vs RL.
I would have preferred to have stuck with Sheldon.

I've made a 3. a. for you --- it's a bit closer to your point of view.The_Dud wrote: ↑Wed 13 May 2020 1:44pm I think I’d go with 3, though I would also say I think it was getting time to move him on before he left anyway. Re: Let's settle this .. which camp are you in?
3.a - For me.
Was an innovator in 09 and had the players buy in to his philosophy, but his game style was taxing and IMO we were fried after missing out twice in 09-10.
Threw everything at it and came up short.
Didn’t develop the list and was either time to go or time to refresh but not sure Ross had the range to refresh.
Either way we were cooked IMO.
For those writing Grant Thomas
Handed the keys to the Ferrari and couldn’t drive.
Biggest f*** up ever by the club was the druggoS nepotism handing his unqualified, inexperienced, incompetent best mate the head coach role.
A decent experienced, qualified competent coach appointment in 2001 would have built a dynasty.

3a, remove the word great, replace with "very good". Include, "largely inflexible" and then combine JB's two paragraphs of summation.

But don't agree with this:
so he deserved to go, on the balance of things
Scott Watters was NOT a step forward.

Always said we should have stuck with Thomas and I always will. Lyon fans, of whom there are many, won’t change their minds either. So in that sense, it’s a pointless discussion.
Ross was too negative and defensive for mine. You actually have to kick a higher score than the opposition to win premierships.
Any case, it’s all ancient history. Does us no good to continually look back, except to not repeat mistakes.
Happy with Ratts. I think he’ll do a good job.

No faith in Ratten whatsoever. Talk about lead from the front - lead from the front of his belly! You'd think he'd be ashamed to go out in the street, the state of him.

admit it, Saynta - he's an embarrassment to represent a sports club. What does it say you ought to expect from us? Maybe if we were playing darts or were the pub trivia team. Elite athletes are not the words that come to mind.
