Ben Paton

Post: # 1843574Post fugazi »

Even though the seasons over, I'm going to call it: this kid will be really good.

He is a good mark, good kick , quick, disciplined and tough.

Would love to see him after another 10 games under hi belt.

Just watched the replay , and he is on the way to becoming a really good running half back.

Unfortunately we have a team full of them.

Long, Coffield Paton
Jones Roberton Webster
Savage Clark Hind
Wilkie Geary Wilkie

That’s nearly an entire team.

Yes, we seem to have two mini-teams of prototypes.

Team A - Mobile, middle-sized defenders
Team B - Smallish utility/forwards who can run (at mediocre levels) in the midfield.

Just wish we could have some key position players, pure classy mids and out-and-out specialists.

Is or will he ever be good enough to break into the mid field?

I must have been watching a different game. Thought he looked small and ineffective. Couple of tackles he simply had to make in the 2nd half, he didn't make. Looked like he was running in quicksand.

He keeps getting himself selected in front of others.

Club must have big wraps on him!

How do you rank these guys in terms of value...in a game of Survivor? (This is Covid Isolation Exercise at its lamest, I know..) I mean at footy, not at surviving Corona vius!

From first to get thrown off the lifeboat to last.

Clark
Hind
Savage
Paton
Coffield
Webster
Long
Jones
Roberton

I have no idea how good these guys really are..none whatsover...I base this on second hand hype I've heard. Can anyone who has actually got a clue, seen them play a bit comment?...(apart from the obvious futuiity of the exercise, because I know conditions, match-ups will play a huge role in determining their value week to week) Think of it like value to the list itself.

Just my ranking - first is first to get thrown out of the liferaft ... and some of this is on pure upside / downside thinking

Savage
Hind
Webster
Coffield
Paton
Long
Jones
Clark
Roberton (is a gun and a leader)

BUT all are in our best 28 players

I like Paton. I wouldn’t go so far to say he’s a gun but he seems to be a well rounded player with good decision maker. He won’t be a match winner but a reliable player.
I read an article when he was drafted saying that he spent an extra year in the under 18s when he didn’t get drafted. Because he’d already spent a year as a forward and his second as a mid he asked to play in defence in his third year as he felt it would help him develop more.
I think that says a lot about his character. It would have been easy to play midfield against younger players and try to impress that way but he was looking at the bigger picture.

In terms of defenders to support our KPP resources and Roberton who is class, I look to Clark, Long and Coffield

Long will be a “steal” coming to St Kilda from the VFL as he did whilst the Draft positions of Clark and Coffield speak

IF any of those progress to mid-field roles on a full time basis then opportunity will open up for others

But my first priority is to establish our back 6 hence I would be saying this is your role, cement it

One thing the second half v NM showed was our thin delivery options because once Gresham went down and Long was inconvenienced we lacked delivery options (pace, class)

It was a bit akin to watching the match v Geelong

The second half saw Geelong respond putting pressure on our second tier who were found wanting - and so the season turned out

Winning that match cost us ultimately

My view anyway for a bit of chat in our changed world

I wrote Clark..as first thrwon off. I mistook the name with McKenzie...that is McKenzie of least value and Clark as top three.
