It was good wasn't it. His movement in congestion and skills to distribute under pressure was very good. He's really worked hard in the gym too, he looks likes the enjoys the body work.

Re: Marsh 2 Game thread
I watched most of the game, was doing other things at the time, but for me...
Didn’t notice Battle early, but seemed to come more into the game late.
Howard looked good when the ball came down back. Same as Roberton. Neither dominated but did enough. Seems we have a lot of this kind of player.
King’s first half was very good, except for kicking for goal. Missed 3 very gettable set shots, should have kicked 4 before half time. Went out of the game in the second half.
Hannebry was a bit disappointing for mine. Didn’t notice him much.
Hill and Jones stood out for me, maybe because they’re new. Long BOG for mine too.
Ryder looked good in the ruck, but I feel he took away from Marshal’s game, which is my worry going into the season with both of them.

Long has a bit of mongrel in him as well..
You won't see many players break his tackles or beat him 1:1

Re: Marsh 2 Game thread
Early on in his career, some people in 2018/19 were comparing him to a 50 or 100 game player. You could see that he was a good user of the footy even back then and he just needed games and a coach that understood that. Hardly ever wastes it.
He was sometimes a bit slow early on but I think that’s because he wanted to look for a teammate. His urgency and his game awareness has also improved out of sight.
We’d be a tp 4 team if we had 2 Jack Steeles, 2 Ben Longs, 2 Brad Hills, 2 Dylan Robertons and 2 Romas

Re: Marsh 2 Game thread
Not once did I think "I wish Bruce/Newnes/Steven/Acres was playing". That in combination from our new recruits doing so well are good signs. The remainder of the standouts of the game are:
Long's shift back is a great move, best on ground.
Hill's short kicking skills seem to be contagious.
Butler and Lonie as a twosome offer much more at ground level up forward. Wait for Gresh to get back and see what happens there.
First half felt like shades of 2019 with the long bombs into 50, poor accuracy, and umpires on the wrong side of every decision.
Battle was very good when he played on the wings - might be worth a shot.
JB needs a breakout season, I still feel there's more potential there to break games open.

Wilkie also very good down back as was Paton and even Gears looked like he was back to his early 2019 form.The_Dud wrote: ↑Sun 08 Mar 2020 7:16pmI watched most of the game, was doing other things at the time, but for me...

I sort of agree with you on Roma, but I think Ratts has a long term plan and he said in the pregame interview that he wants Rowan to be a good player for the next ten years and with long seasons it was important to try and work with the 2 rucks while Paddy is still capable. I thought Paddy was poor early but had a much better second half. Roma is such a competitive bloke and I thought he gave 100%
Disappointed in Sinclair’s game. Disappointed in one or two of Kent’s efforts where he squibbed it, but overall he redeemed himself.

When Cox was late in the contest against Howard - the one player to nudge him in the ribs in retaliation was Longy.Secret Kiel wrote: ↑Sun 08 Mar 2020 7:45pmAll of a sudden there's a hard edge and physicality about him.Viscount Jeremiah wrote: ↑Sun 08 Mar 2020 7:16pmSecret Kiel wrote: ↑Sun 08 Mar 2020 7:12pmIt was good wasn't it. Re: Marsh 2 Game thread
Long was great. Best game I've seen him play. Clark and Long give us great ball movement of HB. Speaking of Clark looked very comfortable in midfield also.
Wilkie played a great game. Liked some of Howard's work. Jones ok but very "fumbly". Needs to be cleaner but early days yet. Can't see Kent Butler and Lonie in the same team. We need another point of difference up forward, so I'd be playing somene like Marsh ahead of Kent. Coffield looked good with only short minutes. Lonie and Butler are a fantastic forward duo.
Billings ok with not being brilliant. Good signs today though.
Battle is the mystery at the moment. He's too good to leave out but where do you play him? We need another tall up forward so it's him or Marsh. Battle first choice. Hanners will be better for the run. Paton played well also. Round 1 team is not easy to to pick with Carlisle, Ross and Gresh to return. Webster and Savage also would have to be in the mix. When's the last time we were this healthy for competition for spots?

I thought Roberton looked rusty.
Howard much better than last time.
Max impressive in first half.
Battle impressive late in the game.
Hannebery flashed in and out.

From today's team.
Kent and Sinclair are certain outs.
Carslile, Seb and Gresh are certain ins.
Robbo or Howard are the ones to make way for Carslile.
Coffield probably makes way for savage, doubtful it will be for Webster.

Re: Marsh 2 Game thread
If Jake Carlisle is 100% fit I’d play him but if Ben Brown is out it probably means we can risk leaving him out 1 more week
I don’t think Savage plays and I’d keep Coff or maybe play Webster if he’s 100% fit
One bloke that was a little disappointing today was Luke Dunstan. Effort good, displayed his usual hardness and got plenty of touches but he butchered it and wasted countless inside 50’s. He wasn’t alone in this regard but I noticed a few too many clangers from him and long bombs that went straight to the opposition

Robbo was flogged early. As to be expected he needs some conditioning, doubtful he'll be playing in the first few weeks.kosifantutti wrote: ↑Sun 08 Mar 2020 8:02pmI thought Roberton looked rusty.

Max's only goal looked impressive but there was not one defender putting any pressure on him. That won't happen in a game for points.

Savage will be at Sandy all year!

Savage has given many years of service, but I hope Long keeps him out of the side.
Why?
Because Long played HBF as a junior, and is at the moment looking like s more accomplished HBF.
Shano might be playing a lot of Zebs games...

Saying a player like Savage will be at Sandy all year is petty.
And Carlisle has competition, arguably deliberate and manufactured competition based on contractual cycles and we could be the beneficiaries of that in 2020. Dougal versus Jake is a mouth watering subplot. Jake's future at the club beyond 2020 will be hugely dependent on how Dougal performs. Expect Jake to put up a fight.

Re: Marsh 2 Game thread
With such an influx of new players, they're still working out how they gel together.
Just a quick rundown on a few players
Geary was really solid and quite fit given his slow start to pre-season.
Hannebery is not at peak fitness. He was okay in close but there was no real run from him. He'll need a few more weeks to get to his best
Roberton was very good. He played as we expect from him. Will be a huge asset this year
Wilkie was solid. His kicking is superb and you just know he'll kick it to advantage. I see no problem with having both he and Roberton in the back half
Battle came into the game late when he appeared to move forward. Had a very good last quarter and took a couple of strong contested marks
Coffield spent most of the game on the pine, but when he came on he looked pretty sharp. He's deceptively quick
Sinclair couldn't get into the game.
Butler was pretty good. His tackling pressure is very good. He'll be in the team round 1
Ryder and Marshall were just okay. Not sure is Ryder up forward is going to be a huge asset to us. I think Battle is a better option. It's early to call, though
Kent was busy early. Was in the game quite a bit. Ball use was just so so.
Paton looked like a 100 game player down back. Nothing spectacular, but dependable and hard working. Another deceptively quick player.....Is there a bit of Frankie Peckett about this guy?

Coach was happy with him.
From herald sun.com.au
"Ratten praised Dan Hannebery’s “voice and direction” on the field after he collected 18 disposals.'

Re: Marsh 2 Game thread
Ratts said before the game that Marshall is 24 and they want him to still be playing for St Kilda at 34. They don’t want him too beaten up.
Grundy is a pretty damn good player, but I thought overall we shaded them in the ruck.
I like the two rucks and I hope we stick with it all season. I know other teams use just the one and a pinch-hitter, but why should we if we have two that are good enough and can both play forward?
Ryder is protection for King and Marshall.
