Saints v Freo

Pretty entertaining game.

If the big blonde number 12 could convert a few more set shots for goal we’d be doing it easy! 😉

Two of their better players carried off with knee injuries and leading the unbeaten Dockers by 8 points in the last quarter.

Had the game absolutely in the bag, and a brain fade with 2 minutes to go cost them the game.

With a bit more experience they could be 3-1, the talent is there.

The umps maintain their proud record of deciding the result in Saints v Freo games.

Awful viewing in the end. BUT the Saints are playing some really good footy. The 2 major injuries really hurt- White and McCarthy both top players, sorely missed.

There are a lot of serious knee injuries in the AFLW. Too many really. I read somewear that their footware might be to blame. Mens boots which are really unsuitable for the female foot.

Greiser’s long kicking is an absolute weapon in AFLW.

That’s 10-12 ACL injuries for the season so far, a frightening statistic.

Hadn’t heard about the boots being to blame, but I’ve heard people saying it’s the hard grounds this time of the year.

Both might be a factor, but you’ve also got to take into account the biological differences between men and women.

It’s very sad for Tarni White. I don’t know what the answer is for AFLW

Very sad for young Tarni and the other girls undergoing ACL injuries.

I am sure the AFL will undergo studies, I know Netball has a high ACL rate also which has historically been blamed on the stop start high court impact nature of the game.

At this point on time I doubt anyone has sufficient data to understand the causes being physical structure verses, foot wear, surfaces, etc or a combination of all.

After my own daughter did her ACL playing high level netball I took a far greater interest in the reasons why. Apparently according to her physio (who virtually specialises in ACL injuries) a bloke by the name of Mick Hughes, it's not just football or netball but almost all sports that require twisting and turning for women. Apparently soccer is a shocker. Women aged between 18-20yrs of age are most susceptible to it. Has something to do with their biological make-up compared to men. The only answer I can see is the physios at these high performance level sports giving greater time to not only injury prevention exercise programs involving plyometrics and other preventative type exercises, but education on game day to activate the muscles around the knee. Some ACL's are completely non preventable but some are preventable.

I heard that Ash Brazil from the Aust Diamonds netball team and at the pies in the AFLW completely ruined her knee yesterday. Can you imagine say Scott Pendlebury playing high level basketball over summer and blowing his knee out doing it. Netball Australia will not be happy I'd imagine

Netball introduced a rule where the players can take an extra step when they get the ball which helped cut down a lot of knee injuries

I’ve had two ACL’s done in my life so know a lot about it. It’s nothing really to do with boots or the ground(although soft fields can lead to the leg stopping in one place); just our knees aren’t designed to cope with any unnatural twisting that sport produces. It’s just pure luck that there aren’t more in any contact sport

Lots of skill errors, but still an exciting game to watch. We did well against the ladder leaders - just ran out of legs in the end after a couple of key injuries. Bad brain fade by MacDonald, but a great goal from her a few minutes earlier.
