Nup.
Better to wait until after the preseason games when there is a better chance of going close to the side selected for round one.
Rest is just fluff and bubble.

Good effort. We def have a tall problem I believe (good one to have). I’d go another small the bench - probably Long. Will be interesting to see who gets the go ahead of Battle / Howard.

This is what I think is the most likely team. Not the one I would pick.
1. Marshall, Steele, Ross and Hanneberry in the center for the first bounce of the season.
2. I would like to see Parker instead of Long but the club wants Long. I know the club wants Long in the backline but he is not experience enough in my opinion yet.
3. It will be a long time before we see Kent in the side again. Poor trade.
4. I would like to see Savage up forward as he can kick straight. I wonder why, as a starting point, the best kicks aren't played forward. Battle, Savage, Roberton, Clark are the best kicks for me.
5. Others ahead of Dunstan. But he will get the spot for Round 1 on experience.
6. I would have Geary as the run with player (Cunnington) but it would be hard to make that change in the first round. If they do, Savage would play back and Sinclair would go out.

Looking in from afar, he looks like he can play but, has a real puppy fat boyish build that’s taking a few years to build up to AFL level. Might surprise a few this year after another pre season.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Fri 20 Dec 2019 10:47pm Pls tell me about Coffield. Re: Locks and openings round 1
Some on here must watch a different game than me
Coffield
Perhaps a look at his first 20 minutes v Fremantle until injured - which built on his previous performances
And to repeat, St Kilda need to improve and that includes personnel particularly our experienced personnel (and the reason we traded in 5 players from other Clubs and Hannebery last year)
The side I would like to see evolve in 2020 is
Battle Howard Coffield
Clark Carlisle Roberton
Hill Steele Jones
Billings Marshall Long
Gresham King Membrey
Ryder Ross Hannebery
Dunstan Butler Bytel and one other
Of interest will be Austin
I just view that given where we are starting from it is time to move on from the likes of Geary, Webster, Savage and Brown and to embrace the future
The recent past has been what it has been including that the same sides have given us thrashing’s year in and year out
We have to start beating those sides if we are serious in thinking we are on the right track
I still have concerns as to the potency of Ross, Steele and Dunstan in the one side - they simply do not hit the scoreboard in a game where you have to score more than the other side

Re: Locks and openings round 1
Highlighted are locks in my opinion, the others are in a battle with either proving fitness / readiness (Roberton / King), a battle with similar types (Parker, Long, Lonie, Butler etc), ??? Over the make up / game style / direction may influence, opening the door for the likes of Sinclair, Phillips to prove their value or we go with kids, Bytel, Byrnes etcminneapolis wrote: ↑Tue 14 Jan 2020 4:15am B: Jarryn Geary, Jake Carlisle, Callum Wilkie

If Roberton is not deemed ready for round 1, I'd like to see Coffield named on the bench, Webster taking HBF.
If King is not deemed ready for round 1, I'd go with Lonie, Battle, Butler.
Leaving two spots on the bench, Parker & Long.

Re: Locks and openings round 1
No doubt by round one half these guys will be our injured but my best 22
Backline:
FB: Geary Howard Wilkie
HB: Roberton Carlisle Webster
I really want Battle and Coffield in but hard to find a spot presume Howard is a lock to start but really haven't seen him play much, if Carlisle Robo and Wilkie play there is no room for Battle perhaps on the bench as swingman but given Ryder and Marshall will share the ruck not sure there is room for another tall. Big risk that Robo doesn't make it back and Carlisle could well spit the dummy after the trade rumours last year. A fit motivated Carlisle could be All Australian a petulant slow Carlisle will struggle to play with the competition we now have for key defense. Savage also deserves a spot after by far his best year last year but Webster at his best is better and more versatile.
Midfield:
C: Hill Hannebury Jones
R: Marshall Steele Ross
Really hope Clark Gresham and Bytel are first choice midfielders by the end of the year but the experienced group will get first crack. Dunstan in the mix as well and Billings on a Wing
Forward Line:
HF: Billings Membury Gresham
FF: Long King Ryder
I presume the 2 rucks will be the starting option, and that only works if one plays forward. I have pumped for Long over Butler Parker and Lonie mostly on potential but I expect all three will get plenty of games.
Interchange: Clark Bytel Coffield Parker
Emergency: Battle Butler Dunstan
Given the two rucks no room for a key position player on the bench so Battle is the one that misses but I presume that fate will intervene and he will be in the 22 most if not all weeks, I was tempted to drop Carlisle to make way for him. Butler probably plays over Coffield and Parker and Dunstan over Bytel but we need to get games into our most talented players ASAP so I am picking the youngsters on the bench. Sinclair Savage Lonie will all get plenty of games Hind Paton will play a fair bit as well

Re: Locks and openings round 1
I believe Logan Austin should be our full back. He has the
size and his ability to spoil is first class. Then I would play
Howard at CHB, Carlisle as the loose interceptor. The other
3 spots in defence is anyone’s guess. I can’t really see a
spot for Geary unless we have injuries

If Brown gets a game it means the wheels have fallen off.
That is by no disrespect to Nate at all but he has been kept on the list as a backup and for a mentoring role.

What I noticed when I was picking my side was how much my bias informed my decision. I suppose that is true for every decision we make. So it would be the same for the selectors.
I also wonder what are the two key Club goals that Ratts has for this year and how does that affect the player development. Is his first task to win games? It may sound simplistic but it really affects whom you choose.
Perhaps start well and then introduce players as the are ready? OK but would you risk going from 3-2 to 3-4?
Play the new guys so that they learn to gel?
Play the new guys so that we can give a good impression to possible recruits?
Rotate 12 guys through the team in groups of two for a couple of games each? Would that jeopardize stability and cohesion?
I suppose the match committee in its public utterances would say that they want to do all of those things.

Whatever they say, I doubt they pick a team with anything in mind but to win from round 1. Only when finals either assured or out of reach do they switch to blooding the kids.

Nice work.
I also picked Savage in my team as I think he has shown to be a consistent contributor for a number of seasons. He's a good C+ solid AFL player IMO and needs to be pushed out by better performers.
I like Savage as he's durable, penetrating kick, decent pace and can run it out of defence.
Geary, Clark & Savage are the first choice small defenders for mine (while Clark develops into a mid) with Webster coming back from injury and Paton in the mix if the continues to improve.

Re: Locks and openings round 1
I think you have gone too short in the backline with Howard, Austin, Carslile & Battle.Nick_BlueNRG wrote: ↑Fri 17 Jan 2020 2:47pm This is the team I would like to see round 1. The oldies that I have left out should only play if we are hit by injuries. This is the precise reason why Geary should not be captain IMHO.
Battle, Austin, Coffield
Clark, Howard, Carlisle
Hill, Steele, Jones
Billings, Marshall, Sinclair
Gresham, King, Membrey
Ryder, Ross (vc), Hannebery (c)
Lonie, Bytel, Parker, Long
Sure you couldn't swap Nathan Brown for Coffield and Clavarino for Clark?

B: Jarryn Geary, Dougal Howard, Callum Wilkie
HB: Dylan Roberton, Jake Carlisle, Nick Coffield
C: Hunter Clark, Seb Ross, Bradley Hill
HF: Jade Gresham, Tim Membrey, Jack Billings
F: Jack Lonie, Max King, Ben Long
Foll: Rowan Marshall, Dab Hannebury, Jack Steele
Interchange: Paddy Ryder, Luke Dunstan, Zak Jones, Josh Battle
Hardest was savage v coffield v webster, but we have to keep developing coffield.
I have doubts on Roberton but if he comes good he's a definite in.
up forward not sold on ben long, and dan butler could come in.
Nothing better than a good Dad Joke.

I like the look of this side, but I’d reverse Ryder and Marshall’s starting positions.Hunter2King wrote: ↑Thu 26 Dec 2019 7:58pm Battle Howard Paton

Billings and Gresham need to rotate through the middle, as they’ve got way too much talent to be wasted sitting on a HFF.

Carlisle is at his best at CHB.

Webster and Lonie will have many competitors for a spot in the 22. Butler too, but I think for Round 1 they will favour Butler.
