Bytel has never played AFL so to say he is a gun is folly in the extreme.skeptic wrote: ↑Thu 26 Dec 2019 10:53pm I don’t think forumites are being particularly over the top in their expectations of Bytel.
He was a highly touted junior, he appears to be over his injury concerns, the club’s talking him up and people want to see him play and do well.
The mentality of the internet in general seems to be that every action requires an opposite reaction of equal force. A bit of excitement is therefore met with a ‘lower those expectations’

This is such an unwarranted slur on a young player... given ur recent posts, I trust you agree a 24hr ban is deservedNick_BlueNRG wrote: ↑Fri 27 Dec 2019 11:41amBytel has never played AFL so to say he is a gun is folly in the extreme.skeptic wrote: ↑Thu 26 Dec 2019 10:53pm I don’t think forumites are being particularly over the top in their expectations of Bytel.

Re: Jack Bytel
No, but Acres was the GOAT and he pretty much underachieved in most games.
Play him in the gut and he’ll dominate was the call.
Here’s the thing
You need to earn midfield minutes (and actually defend) and Acres did not.
Supporters get a set on a player and that’s it
Either underrated (Ross, Geary or Brown) of Overrated (Acres, Gresham or Carlisle)

Oh well.
Sam Walsh never played any VFL either...
Kid might just come out and smash it straght away.
We will find out soon enough.

Mindsets to the point of obsessiveness, usually not based in reality and often based on prejudice learnt within the echo chamber.
If Bytel get's selected for round 1 then I will be extremely excited and supportive of the kid and his prospects as I am of every player to debut for our club, in fact it is one of the most single greatest pleasures I derive from our sport and club is watching a young player debut for his first AFL match and for our club, and then, also watching him develop and his journey. Almost no greater pleasure do I take. HOWEVER, I will be extremely surprised if Bytel is selected for round 1, it would be shear madness considering the proven talent that is way ahead of him.
This is not 2014, we are not at the lowest of lowest, rock bottom positions in our rebuild, our goal in 2020 is to reach finals and we have finals capable team so in what universe would you pick Bytel ahead of the other ready made, AFL capable and proven midfielders based on what we are capable of, and what our goal should be in 2020.

Re: Jack Bytel
And the forgotten mid, one Jack Sinclair, could play a half forward role more this year and rotating through the midfiel. He has a golden opportunity to get off the chain with more support around him. I'll personally have the tracker on him this year as I think he is an intriguing player in the context of the sudden influx of A grade talent into the midfield. He certainly can't afford for Bytel to go past him in 2020.B.M wrote: ↑Sat 28 Dec 2019 12:56pm Current Mids

Re: Jack Bytel
Strange career trajectory for Jack SInclair.
He kicked
18.7 in 2015
4.4 (from 9 games) in 2016
8.8 in 2017
6.9 in 2018
4.11 in 2019
Going backwards in both output and accuracy.

Jack Sinclair needs to lift his workrate. Looks very timid but has great skills. Maybe under a good coach he will blossom.

Re: Jack Bytel
If he’s our best inside mid
Geez
We are in trouble
Hannebury has elite touch and hands inside, Steele is a good inside mid who also stops, as an inside, Ross wins the most footy. Gresham can power out of a stoppage.
Dunstan just does not win enough footy and isn’t damaging with it.
He’s an ok back up inside mid, not front line, his tank is woeful

The thing about Dunstan is he'll jump on a hand grenade for the team and to win a contest.

Not sure you can justfiy that comment.
If we look at '1%ers' as the closest stat to 'jumping on a hand granade' then the AFL leaders are averaging 5-10 per game.
Nathan Brown averages 10 per game. Dunstan averages 1.
All defenders over 3 admittedly.
But for midfielders:
Selwood, Yeo, Sloane average 3. All hardnuts.
Pendlebury, Hunter, Merrett, Sidebottom, Fyfe, Taranto, Dangerfield, Zorko, Steele, Billings, Ross, Macrae, Oliver, Hopper all average 1.5-2.
https://afltables.com/afl/stats/2019s.html
So we can officially say Billings is now a 'hardnut'.

Re: Jack Bytel
are you arguing Dunstan won't put his body on the line to win a contest or help the team win, there was a game late in the season we won and had it not been for Dunstan's act of courage and his clear disregard for his personal safety we might have lost, can you remember the act?
As a side question, what is the official definition of a 1%er.

He is tough. I am just not sure his acts of toughness outweigh other areas.
And im not going to be dragged in to the 'definition' argument for a stat because it never ends. But i do think Selwood is tough and puts his body on the line so 1%ers seems like a fair enough proxy in this context.

Re: Jack Bytel
Thanks for the compliment on the nic btw.
Ok so humour me, do you remember the act?
I'm not trying to be funny, but it goes to a point I'd make about us all wanting players in our side that can "win the game off their own boot".
Reallly isn't what we want; is a player who can "win a game from their own actions", and so if you remember that act you might agree that without Luke in the team that game, we probably wouldn't have won that game.
So to use BM's comment about using perception with regards to a players value to a team, we must look at the acts within the stats, it's what coaches love, and for the obvious winning reasons.

Re: Jack Bytel
Toughness is also the ability to outwork your opponent.
The knock on Dunstan is that he cannot defend, just cannot run with elite mids.

Sinclair covers a lot of ground, timid might be right. Both in the contest and demanding the ball. Would think it’s a make or break year for him.magnifisaint wrote: ↑Sat 28 Dec 2019 7:58pm Jack Sinclair needs to lift his workrate. Looks very timid but has great skills. Re: Jack Bytel
I think he was in the top 3 for distance covered per game (Sinclair)
Work rate not his problem
The swap of him and Billings Wing/HHF obviously saw Billings stats go up and Sinclair’s go down.
Having said that, he did not do enough and needs to impact more

'lll put it another way. No way does LD get a game at the Tigers or Eagles.
Doesnt have the polish of a Prestia or Dom Sheed who are similar types.

Re: Jack Bytel
So many ways of looking at a subjective topic, how would Dom or Prestia go in a bottom 4 side where they are the main focus of an opposition coach week in and week out, especially as players who are physically under developed and have less than 50-100 games of experience.Hunter2King wrote: ↑Tue 31 Dec 2019 11:10am 'lll put it another way. Luke Dunstan has no excuses though in 2020 so lets have this discussion in one to two years so we are comparing apples with apples.
