He lost his way a bit in his final few years, but there's no heard feelings from me and I wish him all the best with his new ventures. Welcome back at the club any time.
I think you are being extremely generous with the "honest service" description. I'm not sorry we got rid of him especially when we have Brad Hill as a replacement.
No one much else will miss him.

When Newnes went at 100% he was serviceable, but like too many - like that peaheart Arces - he simply rarely gave 100% because there wasn’t pressure for a spot in the team being one of the coaches favourites.

I’m expecting Billings to go hard also this year

Good honest player was Newnes, nothing special, far from terrible!

Did a selfless role in his final years, as Mav did, and because few understand that role and the team first nature of it, probably don’t understand why he was getting selected?!

Was it part of Weller’s role to consistently spray set shots from 40m out?

I remember Stevie Baker telling an interviewer (Sheahan?) about the day he was pulled aside and told the story. He knew he could play, had a wide repertoire of skills etc., but a the story he was told was that from now on, he could only do a fraction of that repertoire, and concentrate on being just the Stevie Baker we saw, thta us, if we wanted a career at the top level. He would have to be bottom shelf. It happened early, earlier in his career than it seems Newnes. I assume Newnes was told something similarly limiting and shackling, and just didn't like the sound of it.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

And also to be consistently inconsistent.

Newnes sounds bitter.

It’s the most fascinating revisionism of all isn’t it... can’t call a bad performance a bad performance anymore. Now it’s doing a role.

What did we ever gain from the 10 possession, no tackles, SFA goals games that he played so often. Occasionally got 14 touches, a tackle and a goal and it was the greatest ever...
All in our worst period over 20 years. Role players, yeah

Maybe he was limiting his opponent?

Supporters see offence

Coaches see defence

Truth is
He started as a HB (easiest position) did ok
Moved to the wing - again was pretty good, maybe not as productive and efficient as required though.
Then went to defensive HF - a position that requires discipline and selflessness. He did OK there.

He was offered a new contract, but wanted a fresh start.

Geary is a player that even his harshest detractors acknowledge his stopping ability.
Weller was not even remotely considered a player that excelled in defence
Newnes got some respect in that degree... he was however mostly criticised for a lot of his efforts, lack of talents and low percentage plays.

You can bang on about his internal reputation/regard etc but the reality is that he didn’t elevate his game over the last 2-3 years. Whether it was because he didn’t work hard enough, was used incorrectly, disposal was too iffy, suffered from the overall horrendous vanilla’ism that was the hallmark of the Richo era whatever.

The fact is that ultimately, he struggled to have a positive impact on games... that’s way he wasn’t offered a decent contract

Limiting his opponent with .............. 0 tackles

Solid clubman but we are slowly getting rid of the dross

He may have had tickets on himself but the Saints weren't interested in buying them.

Are tackles the only way you limit an opponent?

Playing on a running HB??

As a defensive forward It’s not about tackles, it’s about playing on your opponent whether in defence or in offence. Not a fun role, as you do not chase the footy and number 1 aim is not to get a kick, it’s to stay accountable to a HB.
You aren’t at stoppage so tackle numbers won’t be high

What you do, is not allow your opponent to get free to receive the ball in space. So basically run with him so opposition can’t use him

What’s your point BM? Newnes wasn’t a great player so club are moving on. Of course defender isn’t all about tackles, who said it was? the fact remains that Newnes got bigger all tackles playing a mostly defensive role. 0 in 5 games or something - is that acceptable to you? Would you prefer newnes doing a barely ok job in 3 positions or have Jones, Hill, Butler?

Did you read the thread Barometer, or just my post?

Devilhead suggested it, just a few posts back!

Newnes was no star, nor was he a dud. Just a GOP.

I have suggested many times, he (like Weller) added too much weight and lost his strength which was his running power.

Size is not necessary for outside players, running is very much necessary!
Which is why he found himself no longer in the midfield. Therefore, no longer got midfield numbers after 2016

What happens if the attacking half back gets the ball?
Wave your arms around??

If the rebounding hb is quicker than you and you dont tackle him when the opportunity arises, do you just run around in circles and chase butt?

You try not to let them get the ball, by manning them up!

Do you know what percentage of tackles are running tackles vs stoppage tackles?

Try manning up on a good player and they will cut you to shreds.
Its such a nothing term.

Tagging, manning up, run with... all mean the same thing.

Focus on opponent before the ball.

I dare say if he (and Weller) were playing thier role to an acceptable level both would still be on the list. Coaches decided he wasnt.

Blind johnny could see that Newnes wasn't displaying the right attitude, intensity or skill level required on match day. Which is why he went from being well liked to being a whipping boy. His attitude has obviously followed him to Carlton.
