GT told me he had not even heard of a few of the players that were drafted by JB and he was good with that. Gilbert for instance.

One of the main reasons for our poor drafting in JBs time was it was poorly resourced.
JB was basically on his own, and he was only a part time employee!
You could tell the teams he had watched the most in the draft year - as there’d be a pattern

2006 Queensland - first two picks Armo and Howard
2002 Gippsland. - first two picks Goddard and Ferguson

He just didn’t see enough footballers or have enough knowledge on them.

He recruited Gwilt, Raymond and Sweeney and I don’t believe he had seen any of them play. Just had someone tell him about them!
Gwilt was a inspired but of recruiting.
We only got Gwilt because he played at Noble Park - where Carlton's head recruiter (Wayne Hughes) was also heavily involved. We got wind that Carlton were going to take him and swooped with our pick before them. Gwilt was very good for us and cost barely nothing.

Don't think for a second that the Bulldogs wouldn't have taken Billings at 3 if they had that pick.
Boyd, Kelly, and Billings were the clear top 3 in that draft at that time.
Simon Dalrymple (now at the Swines) is largely credited with the Bont choice. He's said before that he rated Billings very highly but he was also the only one to put on record that he thought Bont was going to be something special. Then backed it up.

I rate Billings much more highly than others. He'd be a jet in team with some decent mids around him. Meanwhile - we've had plonkers like Ross and Dunstan around him.

Still - we could be Melbourne who sold Josh Kelly for Dom Tyson and Christian Salem. That'd be giving you nightmares like Paddy does for us.

Gwilt was OK

He was Pick 63 which was a good selection.

Inspired recruiting would be Dane Swan at 58, Sam Fisher at 55 or Stephen Milne as a rookie.

The fact he was plucked out of the EFL was his point of difference. James was a very good kid, great student, extremely talented junior footballer and cricketer. Initially he chose to play premier cricket over a stingrays pre season.

"He said he felt it was detrimental to have both Riewoldt’s together. "
this is the most insane thing I've ever heard. I can't get my head around the stupidity

It’s all a lot easier in hindsight.

Ball would have been just as good if not better than Judd and Hodge if his career wasn’t ruined by OP.

But still, stuffing up the obvious ones is a bit frustrating, ie Paddy/Petracca.

Hindsight is all we have to judge decisions.
Should we have drafted Biggy? We will have to wait for hindsight.
In hindsight I think we should have drafted J. Riewoldt rather than Armo.

At the time we should of drafted Jack R or James F with that pick 9

I drafted Saquon Barkley with the first pick this year, which was the correct decision, but in hindsight I should have drafted Christian McCaffrey, but it would have been a risky choice at the time.

A lot of luck involved, much clearer in hindsight. Armo should have been played much more in 09/10, and if he was who knows...
