So let me ask again...
What is it exactly that we’ve lost out on in regards to long term prospects?

Re: Do you honestly think bringing in 5 traded players was the right move?
I hope that too Everton. I do think we needed this trade period and I think the timing to trade, rather than draft, was spot on...this lends us to being more sustainable in my opinion.evertonfc wrote: ↑Tue 10 Dec 2019 12:50amGeez, look at the Hill trade. We paid market overs, both in contract and trade value.Ghost Like wrote: ↑Sun 08 Dec 2019 9:03pm Really evortonfc? I'm not sure what we paid overs for in terms of what we missed out on???
Again Everton, what did we miss out on? Who would you have chosen with our #6 draft pick? Remembering we had no round 2 or 3 picks - meaning we keep a midfielder who doesn't want to play for us anymore & a forward who wanted to secure more than 2020.
& now two examples of how paying for what you want & need actually works out...
But Geelong paid market overs for an inconsistent Brad Ottens, and eventually he played a role in three flags.
Sometimes, the price is worth it, and can become justified in hindsight. That's what I hope happens with Hill. We've braced ourselves for that reality.
You could say the Dogs got value out of the Tom Boyd deal because of what he delivered on the only day that matters, even if the fee was out of this world. They got a flag and you might say that's all that matters. Fair enough.
I'm not sure people understand this nuance but I can't be bothered explaining it further.
Incoherent sentence - apologies, think round 23, 2019, what have we done that puts us in a worse position through 2020?I'm also not sure what we gave up that hurts our 2019 position in comparison to where we start and finish in 2020???
A top-up merchant! Can't have enough of that late 1980s-thinking."With that said, our list looks better now, and there's no question we'd become stale"
is confusing. Surely you'd rather have a better looking list?
This is my favourite, you do realise I was quoting you? You said "our list looks better now" & "we'd become stale", so dust off your Brisbane scarf & come down to Moorabbin. I'm excited, sounds like you are too (maybe, I'm not sure).
You must have loved it when Brisbane went after Fev, Staker, Raines and Buchanon for their tilt at the top.
Yeah, right - that's great and all, but I'm probably looking at 2022 and 2023 to scoot up the ladder and build a decade of prolonged success through strategic planning, intelligent drafting, value trading and coherent list management - now that's "great and all", I hope we learnt from stuffing up that opportunity from the early 2000's. Geelong didn't.Whether it is or isn't is a moot point, it's what we have. My gauge says I'm looking forward more towards 2020 and beyond than I was towards 2019.
But I also hope we make the eight in 2020. Just think there's more to a sustainable, successful footy club than going for broke in a 12-month period.

Hill in for Steven... we’ll get more years
Howard in for Bruce... other end of the grand but no major change to the profile
Jones in for Acres... same as the above
The only quick fix is Ryder.
So let me ask this...
are the players traded in representing more value than failed draft picks?

You have obviously missed the point entirely Viscount Jeremiah. Next year we only have our First round pick and a few Forth round picks. Sure, we can focus on youth but they will be s***.Viscount Jeremiah wrote: ↑Tue 10 Dec 2019 12:50pm Yes, it was needed.

You are an extremely precious little troll who seems to enjoy putting your name up in lights. Topic has been done to death, now you just want to stick it up anybody with an opinion other than yours. Go away before you drive everybody away from this forum.

In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

I wonder if we can re-draft some of our picks for better players. Clearly, we should have done better with Acres. Probably should have gone the Bont over Billings, too.skeptic wrote: ↑Thu 12 Dec 2019 1:44pmNick_BlueNRG wrote: ↑Thu 12 Dec 2019 12:34pmWe should have improved our drafting if that is the case. McCartin was not the best either. We should go back in time and get De Goey instead.
For where we are in list development, we needed ready made senior players.
We drafted two kids last season and three this season. I think we're getting the mix right.

Re: Do you honestly think bringing in 5 traded players was the right move?
If anyone doesn’t think this was a successful trade period they are extremely difficult to please.
We brought in experiences quality players with plenty of football in them addressing deficiencies.
Pace, ball carrying and line breaking ability, premiership experience, a back up Ruckman and tall forward, a small pressure forward and a key back man .
We have Max King and Jack Bytel along with others like Clark and Coffield coming through there is plenty of young talent.
After 8 years of non finals our club and our business need a strong finals team.

The idiom is usually stated the proof is in the pudding and means that the end result is the mark of the success or failure of one's efforts or planning. The phrase may also be used in the past and future tenses: the proof will be/was in the pudding.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Thu 12 Dec 2019 3:59pmNope. Then why ask for honest debate, i.e. arguing until cows come back to roost on a pudding type cake you can either keep or eat? Unless you really didn't want honest debate because that question cannot be answered today.Nick_BlueNRG wrote: ↑Thu 12 Dec 2019 3:45pmWe can argue this until the cows come home. Re: Do you honestly think bringing in 5 traded players was the right move?
What needles me is there is no alternative suggestion being made so we all have to sit through... well we didn’t win a flag by 2022 so we should have used our first round pick on the guy that went in the mid 30s
