Notice how open and free-running the game is. This may have been in the days of just two on the interchange bench.

Changed rules aside, it’s interesting that two of the opposition that day played a key role in turning the game into the contested mess it is today. I speak, of course, of Ro$$co and his mate Roosy.

I watched only until half time. If memory serves me correctly, the Lions switched Lynch on to Plugger after half time and Lynch did as good a job on him as you would have seen in those days. Plugger may have finished with only seven or eight.

Lockett's absolute peak years 1987-1991 in my opinion.

I think the better players will always be better players ... in any era. If anything, it's the athletic nature of the game that has bought the lesser players up to the level of the better players.

That said - as a spectacle - the late 80's and 90's for me will always be the pinnacle of watch ability as far as our game is concerned. I could make an argument that AFL level footy now is much more closely aligned to soccer as game ... only without an offside rule.

Totally agree Jaxons on hisnpeak years and the fact he was the best I have seen.
Firstly big games create reputations.
Carey, Matthews, Ablett Snr and Junior the names normally bandied around as the greatest all played multiple big finals at their peak. Plugger got his first final at 25 kicks 9 goals 5 in a losing final. He only played 1 final in his very peak the rest were scattered past his athletic peak. This went against his legacy most football supporters didn’t see enough of him at his best.

Harvey was 17 and had only played a handful of games. Didnt hit his straps until for another year or 2.

Yes agree. You can see glimpses of the great player he was to become, but he wasn’t yet dominant. Even so, it was apparent very early he was special.

An expert in wrong-footing opponents. Something to do with bouncing the ball left handed and kicking on his right.

Would a player like that even get a chance nowadays? He wouldn't even be listed at that age at Sandy and even if he ultimately was, he would have to play and stay for there for a long time I would guess. Injury or the chance of being plucked out by an enterprising rival recruiter would also be a possibility.

Lockett's 1991 season is still the best season I've ever seen from any player in my lifetime. 127 goals from 17 games. 34 goals in his first three games. 8 or more goals on nine occasions. Never goal-less. 71% accuracy.

If not for a flawed finals system, 1991 could have been our year.

Lockett missed a few "easy" getties, and we were leading at half time. Was in 91? I think so.

Agreed Harvey 1998 and Riewoldt 2004 was special.
The 1991 side was better in my opinion it was a premiership we could have won. The draw and Abletts thuggery stopped us. We could beat Hawthorn and West Coast but the Cats troubled us ... Plugger was at the end of his peak (1997-1991) Dean Greig was not as good in 92 and Newport was already there in 1991 a very good player...

Kickett and Fletcher were both badly done by by the saints. Absolute tragedy we lost two ball magnets when they were needed. Set us back two three years.
