Some Excerpts re: Ryan Byrnes from this year's TAC Cup

2019 Semi Final - Sandringham Dragons vs. Calder Cannons

#5 Ryan Byrnes

Byrnes, despite a slowish start, really hit his straps half way through he first quarter and never looked back, playing a huge game through the midfield in winning plenty of the ball and firing the it inside 50. Byrnes has been Sandringham’s player of the finals so far and the captain played his role well, winning the ball on the inside and working hard around the ground while showing great composure with ball in hand and moving it quickly inside 50 when needed. Byrnes finished the game with 32 disposals and 10 inside 50s.

Other Games

#5 Ryan Byrnes

Byrnes was the clear standout through the midfield for Sandringham and as their captain led from the front to do everything he could to win the ball and drive it forward. Byrnes was a hard worker at stoppages, getting to the fall of the ball and bursting away from stoppages. His kicking has been an area to work on this year and it didn’t let him down as he often picked the right options. Byrnes finished the game with 28 disposals, 11 inside 50s and three tackles.

#5 Ryan Byrnes

The Sandringham captain lead from the front with a strong performance through the midfield winning plenty of clearances and showing his breakaway speed from stoppages. Byrnes had a stronger first half than second but was still a consistently good player in and around the contest going in hard to extract the ball time and time again. He managed to hit the scoreboard in the last quarter with a nice goal on the run to complete his game finishing with 28 disposals and five tackles.

Interesting that over on BF, Knightmare had him going to us with our first pick and had us passing on Biggy

Good value pick

Obvious choice and with Bytel gives us a couple of developing inside mids

Welcome to Byrnes.

Had a sharp looking profile pic on the draft tracker which is good.

Looks good in his highlights.
Really strong midfielder with pace and skill and a good mark.
Let Ratts and co develop him for a couple of years.

Interestingly he was consistently in the top 20 for ESPN’s power rankings every month.

I just saw his tweets that said Byrnes was a great pickup but not matching Biggy was a mistake. Not really impressed with Connolly either.

Couldn't match the biggy bid without going into next year's draft which we already have messed with. It was a good call by us to get Byrnes as it was a good call by tigers to bid on biggy

I've watch the highlights of RB a few times.
I think he looks/plays a lot like Jack Steven (?)
A perfect long term replacement with maybe better disposal efficiency :D

We could have matched and the small points gap would not have affected our first round pick.

Club most likely just did not rate him as highly as other players. Most likely only saw him as a worth a rookie pick.

Main problem is that we have a crap Academy zone.

Club could either trade for a pick worth points or elect to have points deducted from a pick from next year.

Huge mistake and has me reconsidering whether to commit to paying for all 7 memberships next year.

f****** really pissed off.

The premiers thought he was worth a spot on their list but the high and mighty perennial losers didn't.

We already have Austin, Howard, Clav, Joyce, Battle as key backs. Plus Brown and Carlsisle.

Yeah, I am well aware of that. Biggy might turn out better than all of them.

More interested in discussing Byrnes. Quite possibly a steal if you believe some phantom drafts. A genuine mid, not a half back who can become a mid. Many on here have bemoaned our propensity to pick half backs with the view to turning them into midfielders. Well, in consecutive drafts we've picked two genuine clearance players in Bytel and Byrnes. Should be pleasing to most. Byrnes is reportedly very quick, which is something our midfield has been lacking (apart from Jack Steven) in recent years.

They've had about as many misses as most clubs. I can see why Richmond grabbed their key position stock is aging nad there is not much under neath.

Yeah, and he might turn out to be worse.
God only knows how any of the draft selections will be in the AFL.
I don't understand why people get their knickers in a twist.
It's pretty much a guessing game for gods sake.

Not sure it’s a guessing game

Most of these kids have been tracked from u15s

The stats indicate that most clubs and draft experts get it right nowadays

The best part about Byrnes is he looks ready to impact and find form immediately at VFL level. He has the same attack on the ball as Clayton Oliver, just not the same size. With, Ross Steele and Dunstan around him he may develop very quickly.
