Premiership clock according to the Hun.

Post: # 1833593Post saynta »

From herald sun.com

ST KILDA

WE SAY: 6 o’clock

LAST YEAR WE SAID: 4 o’clock

One of the most intriguing teams of 2020, and hardest to predict. How will the five trade recruits – plus last year’s draftees Max King and Jack Bytel, and a new coach, change the way the Saints play? Should be a lot quicker and more attacking but King (0 games) has to make an immediate impact after letting Josh Bruce (36 goals last season) go. Have traded away most of their draft hand too so need this group to end an eight-year finals drought.

I'm not sure why we traded so much for Hill as few think we are close to a high september finish.
Surely he is not considered likely to be around when we are premiership chances ?

What did we really trade for hill. From all accounts this year's draft is nothing special and next year's is going to be the most effected by father son academy gold coast compensation picks. Basically we lost Bruce who will hurt, Steven who won't because if he stayed he wouldn't have played for us and acres who was good one out of every three games and Newnes who was good three years ago.

What we got was speed which we needed in hill. He was not cheap sure but he is worth more to us then other teams, Ryder for ruck depth, great and relatively cheap, Howard who I never heard if before and now I hear is slow and gets lapped in time trials so not sold on him, Jones who is quick but can't hit a target so he needs work and Butler who couldn't keep his spot in the tigers. But too be fair tigers are class

Bottom line is we will be better but we have a weak forward line so I'm not sure where the goals are really going to come from so better than last year but still a fair way off seems fair

Thanks Saynta

We have some very astute people involved in recruitment (now), so I would expect that improvement will occur. Yes, there will be plenty of pressure to perform, especially for a couple of young players, but we also have a very astute coach (again)

If they can get on a bit of a 'run' like last year, and with some luck they could be anything, it's not too hard to imagine a rush up the ladder

Speaking of weak forward line, could Hanners work as a stop gap small foorward. Older skilled mids often ecell in that role if they can trap, twist and snap.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

We traded a lot for Hill... no other way of putting it it. He’s a very good player, but the reality is that we sold the farm to get him.

First round pick this year
Second, third and fourth round next year
And Acres
That’s basically five players, to secure 1
More than we got for Tony Lockett or Barry Hall

Definitely more than we got for Jack Steven!!!!!

What we got for Tony Locket nearly won us a premiership. What we paid for Hill won't matter when he lifts the blokes around him next year

I'm sure you'll tell us all how well those picks have gone over the next couple of years too, well the successful ones anyway

At the end of the day, we got done by Carlton late last season, freaking Carlton!

Something needed to be done

selling the farm is a dramatic overstatement somewhat, we pretty much got in a very high known quantity over 5 players for pick 6 and some other much lower picks. I'd take a known quantity over an unknown quantity any day of the week when it is well known the next 2 drafts are not much chop.

I have been told the challenge in the 2020 draft is not the talent but that a bunch of the top rated kids are academy linked, father son etc so straight drafting will be compromised.

I have no idea on accuracy of info as I couldn't name a potential top draft prospect.

We clearly paid overs for Hill because he was contracted to Freo.
But I think he'll be worth the investment. A clear upgrade on all of Acres, Newnes, and a 30yo disinterested Steven. Better ball user than all of them and quicker than all of them.
But he wasn't the only player we got. Look at the total package.
We have Butler who was squeezed out of a high quality Richmond forward line. Once they got Lynch, their forward structure changed. Not as many smalls were needed. Talking to Richmond supporters, they have nothing but good things to say about Butler. He's quick and tenacious. But, most importantly, is a finisher in front of goal. We don't have one of those as a pure small forward. Gresh is but is now becoming a midfielder.
Zak Jones is another as part of the package than included Hill. Another player that is an upgrade for Newnes and Acres.

isn't claiming "we paid overs" for a player in contradiction with the claim "he will be worth the investment"?

We couldn’t be seen not getting Hill after all the failed efforts over the past few years and also because other clubs were not getting their man. We had to be seen as wanting someone and getting them. Hawthorn style. Fans would be more disappointed had we not got him than paying overs for our key priority.

my point was if you think an investment is worth it, don't you believe it will give a return on the investment, thus making the investment made the right amount?

I think the overs was paid on the Hill deal in isolation. If we traded all that just for Hill then we clearly paid overs.
The investment is the package of Hill, Jones, and Butler.

Proven? At AFL level? As Forwards!!?!

King - yet to play a game at AFL leve
Marshall - proven to be the best RUCK we have had for many a year and if he keeps his current improvement going one of the leagues best in 2020, but as a forward he has done little. not nothing just not a lot
Howard - left port because he wants to be a defender and was told he had no future with port as a defender, only as a forward. Plus we now know he is slow and has no tank
Members - Is probably our best forward now, no argument there but how many other team would have him as their best or even second best forward?
Battle - selflessly played as a defender last year and was very good due to his skills. He was a great shot at goal in his youth which all bodes well for him returning forward but he is by no ways proven.
Ryder - A ruck, well passed his prime hired specifically to help Marshall out in the ruck. Yes he can float forward while Marshall is rucking but he is not a proven forward, not at this stage of his career

We did no't just trade away this year's draft hand, we traded away most of next years as well with only the first round pick left that is of any value.
Only AFL rules prevented that being used.

We also got a third rounder back in the Hill trade, so that needs to be factored in.
Acres for me took it over the top.

Howard isnt slow, just no tank. Will surely improve over the preseason.

I would have us at about 8 o'clock...we will get a bunch of our 23 year olds entering the start of their peak in 2020.
Steele, Ross, Dunstan, Billings, Gresh all cusping.
