ST KILDA
DAN HANNEBERY’S stumble at his sister’s house in Perth last month will see him miss the first few weeks of pre-season with a broken foot. Youngster NICK COFFIELD has been told to avoid contest work until late December as he recovers from shoulder surgery in August, while PADDY McCARTIN (concussion) has been taken off the list. Elsewhere, the Saints are flying. JADE GRESHAM won’t ever be leading time-trials, but he did record his best skinfolds upon return while JAKE CARLISLE has been spotted in the Moorabbin gym over the past four weeks. Captain JARRYN GEARY – who suffered a broken leg in June and played just five games this year – is running at full speed while recruits DAN BUTLER and ZAK JONES have made strong impressions by moving into their lockers early. MATT PARKER has had finger and ankle problems sorted, while LOGAN AUSTIN basically started his 2020 pre-season late in the 2019 season while MAX KING and JACK BYTEL are humming. Get set for the top picks from the 2018 draft to make an impact next season. As for Fremantle recruit BRAD HILL, he’s road-tripping across the Nullarbor in a campervan as he prepares to begin life as a Saint.

I think more damning for our young players is that a 30+ 100kg+ key defender nathan brown finished top 10. I guess therefore beating many 10 years younger and 20kgs lighter

Could it be Nathan Brown is just really good. The age thing actually can help runners, especially endurance racing.

Browns take off speed is also very high, in a straight line.
His agility is pretty average though, but he is 100 kegs

Brown is the perfect role model for the younger kids to aspire to. Last year our most consistent and best back even though his best is behind him and now he has again come back in great Nick and showed up half the team. Will fight for his spot every week but should be one of the first picked if form is the guide.

Re: Training report... herald sun
It seems that many of the players that have topped the 3 km time trials aren't our best players.
I'd rather Geary spent every moment learning how to kick and Phillips concentrating on getting the ball.

Working on what you're worst at isn't necessarily the smartest option in elite sport. Be the best at the thing at which you excel - and let the coach figure out how to use that.Sombersainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2019 10:08am It seems that many of the players that have topped the 3 km time trials aren't our best players.

But at 6'5" it means he's ripped.

I'm aware of that. I am referring to previous years and making the point that Geary doesn't need to run longer just kick better.saynta wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2019 11:15amGeary wasn't running in the time trial.Sombersainter wrote: ↑Wed 20 Nov 2019 10:08am It seems that many of the players that have topped the 3 km time trials aren't our best players.

Re: Training report... herald sun
Phillips knows how to get the ball. His elite endurance allows him to get into good positions to receive the ball. In the few games he's played he has averaged close to 20 possessions. I see him as a player who could really blossom in the next 18 months.

Re: Training report... herald sun
Well not quite. Phillips averaged 20 possessions up until his last 3 games where he received a little more attention in his movements. His disposals dropped by 30% as a result and he was dropped.
His running is elite, his contested possession and kick to handball ratio is what will need to improve if his run is going to be a big weapon.

The boys were training at TBO this morning when I walked past around 10am.
Getting in before the heat ramps up.
Just doing some jogging at that stage.
There was a breakaway group doing circle work handballs but having a few issues in the howling northerly.
