Re: Paddy to be delisted
St Kilda forward Paddy McCartin will take a break from the game to focus on his recovery from a debilitating concussion problem.
McCartin, 23, is set to be delisted by the Saints despite having one year remaining on his contract.
The No.1 draft pick will spend the next 12 months prioritising his health in the hope his harrowing concussion symptoms improve.
The decision has been made by mutual agreement after recent talks between McCartin and senior club officials.
He will be paid out his full entitlements for next season.
While McCartin wants to continue his football career at the top level, he will be available to be drafted by any club once he is delisted.

Re: Paddy to be delisted
I know a family member, the poor young fella has apparently gone through mental hell over the past year.
Everyone involved obviously knows he’s finished with the exception being the kid himself.
My take is he is holding on to dreams of 2021 as a positive mental goal.
Even if he got himself right physically IMO he’s got little chance of coming back given the ever increasing requirement on speed, endurance and agility in the modern game.
There was no guarantee he was going to make it before his concussion issues.
Best wishes to the young fella.
At leased he has some decent coin for his age and hopefully has invested it wisely.

Re: Paddy to be delisted
No more list clogging.
The club is not prepared to play him again.
This will free up four senior list slots ahead of the end of October deadline.
We needed to accommodate the requirement of a total of three rookie upgrades or senior draft picks.
It will allow the club to acquire a delisted free agent if it likes and still meet the requirement for 3 upgrade or pick additions to the senior list.
We seem to be paying a fortune to say goodbye to contracted players - Steven, McCartin, Young but they won't be clogging our list.

All we now need to hope for is that Robbo comes good and is both clear and safe to play AND finds his 2017 form having missed almost 2 seasons.
Agree with another poster - we should get some compo from the AFL- given they handed GC whatever they wanted and surely a first round pick that is gone due to concussion should be worthy of say, an extra late second round pick??

So the terms are probably rip up his contract hence no need to pay him out but sign him up as a Sandy coach on the same coin and have that in our soft cap?

Armo is gone and his wage was huge, back ended contract had him on $900000 last year.
I couldn’t believe it.

It's not his fault we made him #1, it's also not his fault he's susceptible to concussion. I wish him all the best for a full recovery and a healthy life, devoid of pressure and side effects.

We could have picked anybody with the #1.

We can't ask for compo to make up for OUR poor judgement!

No one could have foreseen that he would be so susceptible to concussion that he is virtually finished at age 22.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Sun 27 Oct 2019 6:34pm We could have picked anybody with the #1.

I can understand people saying we should have chosen Petracca but he was everyone’s first or second pick.
So this is not a poor judgement call.
We could request a compensation pick as to lose a player at such an early stage of his career is a tough penalty.
One year will be our year

Everyone will be watching to see how Hawthorn cures diabetes and concussion.
The first to patent the treatment will become a billionaire.

Re: Paddy to be delisted
Very sad situation. At times in 2016 if you take out isolated highlights of some of our games you could see Paddy was more than up to being a very good player.
Unfortunately concussion issues have prevented that from happening.
For the club it is just stiff number 2s. No different to Tom Boyd having to retire due to mental health or any number of players who have had to give the game away due to injury.
The fact he went at pick 1 is irrelevant. Just bad luck.
Hopefully Paddy can continue to receive the best in medical care and we continue to support him as we are doing for 2020.

Re: Paddy to be delisted
Concussions were bad luck, but like career ending knee injuries pre reconstruction surgery.
However, he never, ever looked AFL fit, and because of that, never looked a prospect.
He needed to be more athletic at his size for a key forward, or he needed to be 198+ if he was going to be that slow.
