Who will be captain in 2020?
Maybe it's time for the rotation policy to come back? You wouldn't think Geary will be captain again surely?

I think they will stick with Gears. Seb loses too many coin tosses.

Re: Who will be captain in 2020?
Retaining Jarryn Geary as captain for 2020 would to my mind fly in the face of all of the substantial changes and improvements that the club have made on and off the field.
Next year will see the Saints field a completely new look team for Round 1, with the inclusion of Hill, Ryder and Jones most certain, and possibly also Howard and Butler, guided by a new and experienced coach in Brett Ratten who will be expected to select players on their skills sets specific to the positions in the team, in other words on merit.
As much as we all admire Geary's commitment to the footy club, I find it difficult to place him in my best 25 in 2020 - there are quite a few defensive flankers that IMHO rate above Geary in terms of skills. Furthermore, he is 31 and recovering from a broken leg, so it remains questionable that he will be able to be as fit to play 4 quarters of football as he was once.
I am quite happy for Geary to be at the club in 2020 to help mentor the younger players, but if he remains as captain then the selectors will be duty-bound to play him if he is fit, irrespective of whether or not he is the best man for the job.

I think Steele is a better balance between work rate and skills than Ross.

Re: Who will be captain in 2020?
Geary cannot be captain, as his lack of skill is a liability and will sabotage all the great work done in the off-season.
It's insane.
Steele for his work rate and better skills than Ross.

Re: Who will be captain in 2020?
Not withstanding the ability to be available for selection each week and perform to his previously set standards, on the face of what you are proposing I'm inclined to think the opposite and think, could the change of captain be one step to far in consideration of all the other changes being simultaneously made. If he can put himself forward as the same physical specimen he's always been, then do you keep him in the Captain's position to settle the new boys into the side and see who emerges or puts themselves forward as Captain material for 2021.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Mon 21 Oct 2019 5:35pm Retaining Jarryn Geary as captain for 2020 would to my mind fly in the face of all of the substantial changes and improvements that the club have made on and off the field.

Re: Who will be captain in 2020?
Captaincy should in the first instance be with a player who is an automatic selection
From left field, I would nominate Marshall
I like what I have observed with his leadership and engagement/instruction on field as his confidence at the level has elevated to where it now is
He is an automatic selection
Geary has been surpassed by skilful players we need in our back 6 and Ross, despite his CV, has work to do confirmed by just 22 goals in 124 games - and a hands on hip response when caught out the other way which we have seen too often for mine

Re: Who will be captain in 2020?
Skunk.
He's now at a good age, he has a good work ethic, and his magnet is not really a magnet any more, it's now superglued onto the board.
One of the first picked.
Knows how to balance work/life because him and JWeb go off to hunt and fish a bit, so he can teach em how to unwind, to stay sane and fresh.

Re: Who will be captain in 2020?
Geary not in best 22
FFS
He’s one of the best lock down small defenders in the AFL
Easily in StKs best 18

Well, until the Port game, in our best 22. Hopefully fully recovered from very bad injuries.
He's not getting younger either - hope another two or three years.
But in the mean time, we need to be grooming another player to take over that role.

I love Steele, but he's never been part of the leadership group and the (purely outsider) opinion I get is he's a more unassuming, quiet type and not looking for that sort of role. Would love to be proven wrong because he's a hard worker and a ripper player.

Thank you.
Discussion around Geary’s value shows up some people’s lack of knowledge of how footy is played.
