PS. How do you think the rest of the players are going to feel when this Hill guy waltzes in and is earning more than everyone else?
Probably not as bad as when a broken down DH walked in last year on 5x$800k
At least Hill is in his prime and can play a bit.
All posters are equal, but some posters are more equal than others.
I was lucky enough to speak to Ratten at a sponsors' event before the start of this (2019) season. I asked him given he'd won flags as a player and assistant at Carlton and Hawthorn, what were they doing that we weren't? Why were they so successful and we were the polar opposite. Essentially it said it came down to resources. They had them. We didn't. But he said ours were getting better. Maybe we're starting to see the benefits of that.
Still waiting for closure ... if you get my drift.

Face facts everyone, we offered more money than any other team could to Hill. $900k per year is ridiculous money.
Now that our Salary cap has been squeezed to the max, lets see how many players "nominate" us next year.

They will turn green with envy an realise that if they want that sort of money they have to perform like Hill.
They will realise that they are overpaid for their mediocrity.
The more you know, the more you know you don't know.

Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

Yes to Ratts
Yes to salary cap room.
Yes we executed our strategy to recruit the 5 targeted players.
BUT
- Was our strategy right - did we identify the right 5 targets?
- Will the chosen 5 perform up to expectations?
- Did we pay overs that might impact our recruiting in subsequent years?
- How will Bruce and Steven go at their new homes compared to the modest draft picks we got in exchange?
- What treasures have we missed out on in the upcoming draft with the picks we traded away (especially #6)?
In reality we will have to wait years till we see how our selections turn out compared to the ones we passed over before we can say we were actually #1 across this years entire trade and draft periods.

At least he could walk last year

Good sensible questions. All of them.
I think a general positive that I have not seen discussed much is that our actions throughout the trade period were ( for want of a better word) commendable - we have certainly gained a bit of respect in the football world ( if the positive media is anything to go by )
But I’m hoping the way we went about it was more than about what happened this year but a ‘bigger picture’ long term strategy aimed at impressing players and player managers -
What I saw was the saints stepping up and saying “we look after players” - we find a guy who wants to come to the saints and we tell that guy he’s coming to the saints - we do everything we can to get him here -
Someone needs to move on for personal or professional reasons - we try as best as we can to accommodate them - even if the result of that particular action in isolation is considered a net loss to the club - ie Steven for 57
Destination club - will be more than just the new facilities and onfield success ( and the coaching staff) - I think it will depend a lot on how we are seen to look after our players

I doubt the players are too worried about Dan.
He is a 3 time AA who made our best 4 out of 5 games this year. As a percentage man you should appreciate players look up to some-one who is in the best 80% of the time they play.
Players are more likely to be anti supporters who accuse 4 time B&F winners of faking mental health problems.
firstly salary caps will go up each year so these Hill amount is high but not stupidly so. Smith and Dougal are above average but then again so are they and Paddy and Butler I think would be relatively cheap.
Secondly our salary cap has been unused for years and we have had gaps and paid contract forward so we have the money so lets spend it. plus we got rid of Steven and Bruce, two of our biggest salaries I'd imagine.
Its all academic now anyway, the money is spent so lets get behind the new guys
