I have a question.

How did we go from becoming a so called basket case to a “destination club” ?

Would love to here your views.

Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

Getting things 'right' off the field has always been the (best) first move to success. An all too rare situation for us I'm afraid

How hard can it really be? The Hawks eat this stuff for dinner

It hasn't happened by accident.

My theory is we haven't been a basket case since Peter Summers and Richo took over, both these men have left a great legacy however it is the nature of the business that good work is not always obvious and that the development of a club and list through the use of the draft takes time. Then the arrival of Simon Lethlean and Dan Hanneberry surely announced us as a club that was well and truly heading in the right direction and a destination club. All of the admin appointments, coaches and players since are surely now seen as people continuing on the good work of their predecessors since Peter Summers arrival. After yesterday we can also probably start praising the appointment of James Gallagher.

Essentially we have been continuously improving club and list since 2014.

💰💰💰 and a decent coach would’ve helped, now hopefully we can turn it into better results on the park.

Moving from Seaford to Moorabbin was huge.

This No.1.
Can you imagine prospective players touring the facilities at Seaford and saying...Yep this is where I want to spend my twenties!

Ratten and our new CEO and various coaches and off field staff including the likes of Slater and Dermie all help.

Yep this the biggest factor. That combined with shipping out Richo and changes to the footy dept.

Yes of coarse, the new facilities back at Moorabbin has been huge for us hasn't it.

I also think that harsh or not, from early 2018 there was a perception about Richo and us needing to sack him.

When you factor everything into season 2019, I actually think he coached as well as could be expected but perception is everything and we looked like an absolute basket case.

The change with Ratten, an experienced coach, regardless of if he’s good or a hack symbolises change and exciting opportunity. There’s no actual hint of success prior to the trade but it’s perception

I reckon he had a fair bit to do with the early sniffing out and dealing with managers. Gallagher & Lethlean did the final wheeling and dealing.

It's the first big reason. A $50million facility in the heart of the bayside area. If that's Summer's only legacy then he gets a tick from me.

The next big reason is Lethers. He's the one who's reshaped our drafting and recruiting depts and brought the whole club into the 21st century.

I have a view that Cho's vanilla brand of football, vanilla selection policy, vanilla approach to recruitment (ie. the type of player he wanted) basically meant we were consistently average.

The gap between the best and worst was quite small.

This meant that we were able to have a relatively competitive season with some significant off-field issues.

However this same vanilla and bland approach to football, also meant that our best was still quite mediocre.

Even if we didn't have injuries, I still think we would have ended up pretty close to where we did. We still wouldn't have beaten the good teams, and still would have probably gone 50/50 with the average ones

So personnally, I don't think Cho coached particularly well last year. We didn't beat any good teams, we were beaten easily by in-form teams, and we fell over the line against rubbish ones.

That was pretty much the story of his time at the helm.

Face facts everyone, we offered more money than any other team could to Hill. $900k per year is ridiculous money.

Now that our Salary cap has been squeezed to the max, lets see how many players "nominate" us next year.

PS. How do you think the rest of the players are going to feel when this Hill guy waltzes in and is earning more than everyone else?

Lethlean said as much last night. He praised James Gallagher for getting the deals done and also, Gubby for keeping everyone sane and focused when things went a bit sideways throughout the period. I don't think you can underestimate that. A cool head when everyone is losing theirs is a great thing to have in your corner.

We have thrown big money at a few guys and failed. Getting Hannerbury started the ball rolling and now Hill reaffirms it even if we paid overs.
The combination of off field staff, location has made us a better looking outfit.
Players want success and to be at their best so higher paid recruits will help achieve that.

We offered bucket loads of more for years and haven’t gotten closed to a high profile player that wasn’t damaged

It's funny how people talk about paying overs for Hill. So what? We had to - the guy is (a) quality at what he does and what we need and (b) had two years on a contract to run. If Cho hadn't have been so goddam selfish - we could've had the same leverage with Steven and Geelong last trade period.

However, no one seems to be talking about how we paid massive unders for Howard. Go ask a Port supporter today how they're feeling about that deal (Hint: it's like how most Saints fans are feeling about being bent-over by the Cats)

Seriously - talk about a glass half empty mentality.

Thank you for your perspective. I would see it differently.
We really haven’t had anyone worth paying 900K. I doubt anyone else would pay Hill that.
It is simply a fact that weaker clubs have to pay ‘overs’ (perhaps 50% more) to attract high end talent. North Melbourne have been desperate to land a big fish for years and have repeatedly failed.
Many clubs pay around Hill’s salary for a number of players. West Coast has several – McGovern ($1.2 mill) and Naitanui (reportedly over $1mill), Kennedy (900K – 1 mill), Yeo, Gaff, Shuey, Sheed, Darling and Hurn would all be in 800K conversation. Now they have Tim Kelly – he’s got to be in same bracket. (I am unsure how they achieve this but that’s for another topic).
The upshot is that successful clubs manage the salary cap very well, and they don’t overplay the foot soldiers.
Good players want great players to come to their club so as the premiership dream can become a possibility.

Money talks!

We have plenty in our TPP to offer!

Dougal got 600k for 5 years
Hill 900K
Smith 600k
Ryder would have got a nice little deal and Butler just needed a game
