All in 5 good acquisitions at a reasonable trade cost
Value relative to their talent.
Hill. Overs, but not hugely so. But remember 2020 picks are worth less due to all the Academy picks.
Howard and Ryder. Unders
Jones. Unders
Butler. Unders
Overall. Good value.
Remember too that it has been hard for Saints to attract talent. So paying a bit more in $$ and trade for Hill is ok by me.
This allows St Kilda to enter 2020 with some momentum.

Could someone break it all down? What we gained and lost.

The list management team had a very ambitious plan and got it done. Very impressive work. Fingers crossed these guys can play!

We got all 5 and kept next year's first.
That seemed to be the objective.
We were always going to lose. 6.
Acres seems to have been a salary dump not rated best 22 by Ratten

Re: All in 5 good acquisitions at a reasonable trade cost
Initially I was worried that we were only chasing older players. But it has transpired all of our targets apart from Ryder are an excellent age.
They mesh in very well with the pool of players we already have at the club aged upto 26/27.
Our only over 27's of note are;
28 Hannas, Carlisle, Savage and Robbo
30 Brown
31 Geary.
So this means we are a very young team, but with the players we now have brought in we have a good bunch of 23-26 year olds, and virtually no "old" players. Only Geary and maybe Brown.
Overall I think this gives us an excellent platform to build on for the next 5 years.

Absolutely stoked we hit all our trade targets

Re: All in 5 good acquisitions at a reasonable trade cost
I have two questions after all the trades
1. Do we actually have any draft picks this year?
2. I thought you had to have minimum draft picks each year

Pick 51. Probably kept to get our NGA Biggy (Worth 259 points)
Our next two picks have no pick value
Pick 76
Pick 82
We can get more if we delist enough players.
One pick for Biggy, one to elevate Wilkie and so we need to pick one more player
Biggy was tipped to not go early. If he does then I think that means that the required matching points more than 259 will come off our 2020 first rounder

Re: All in 5 good acquisitions at a reasonable trade cost
Pleased we were so active.
But our list management team got a bit over-excited and realised that it's just easier to pay overs than find value.
At least we have added immediate depth to our list.
No money-ball trades, which I really think we needed to target, and which we've been really good at during various periods in the past 15 years.

Re: All in 5 good acquisitions at a reasonable trade cost
If you bundle up everything and equate a swap of picks within a round. I come up with the following.
IN
Hill
Howard
Ryder
Jones
Butler
2020 fourth round pick
Pick 51
OUT
Steven
Acres
Bruce
Pick 6
Pick 76
2020 second round pick
2020 third round pick
IN
Hill
Howard
Ryder
Jones
Butler
2020 fourth round pick
Pick 51
OUT
Steven
Acres
Bruce
Pick 6
Pick 76
2020 second round pick
2020 third round pick

Can’t say I agree with all the trades or the price paid, but the club set out to land 5 players and achieved their goal.

Re: All in 5 good acquisitions at a reasonable trade cost
Indicative Draft Order on AFL.com has St Kilda with 2 picks.
51 and 82. Fox Sports says their 3rd pick would be pick 100.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

We only had 6 and 59 coming into this draft anyway. Next year we lose a second rounder, but pick up an extra fourth rounder.

So what picks do we still have next year?
Is it a first rounder, a third rounder and 2 fourths?

Nee!

Re: All in 5 good acquisitions at a reasonable trade cost
The way I look at it is we brought in 5 players that will slip straight into the 22. We lost only 3. We also have our first two selections from last year that had zero impact due to injury and we get Roberton back (fingers crossed). I’m not too fussed about not having much in the draft as hopefully King and Bytel fill that void. I can’t help but think that we will be quite an improved side next season.

Hmmm... better than I initially thought in an overall contexton the outer wrote: ↑Wed 16 Oct 2019 8:17pm If you bundle up everything and equate a swap of picks within a round. I come up with the following.

I guess what I’ve found hurts is that we’ve lost lost 3 definite top 22 players
Steven, Bruce and Acres vs Hill, Jones and Howard... Hill for Steven is a win in the circumstances, Howard for Bruce is a forward for a back that will pbly work out... don’t know Jones well enough to rate that but overall I’d have preferred to lose somebody else than Acres.
Would have been happier losing a Savage, Webster, Dunstan, McKenzie, Newnes, Kent, Sinclair
Feel like Acres was more of a match winner
Paddy I’m still not overly stoked with although he fills an immediate need and our rucks are 100% better and Butler seems much of a muchness

Re: All in 5 good acquisitions at a reasonable trade cost
Overall I'm very pleased. Our drafting in the past couple of years has been reasonable without unearthing anything unbelievable. Clarke looking the most likely and still waiting for Billings to have a real break out year. Remembering that both those lads are early draft picks. I reckon we've brought in proven performers. Ryder is back-up and insurance and can hopefully play a role up fwd, but we're paying virtually nothing and got him dirt cheap. Rapt with Hill, just what we need. Jones will be very valuable even though we have plenty of running backs - he's better than all of them. Butler can play a defensive fwd role hopefully freeing up Gresh. Howard is the pick of the bunch for mine. Versatile, young, great size and fills a real need. Feeling optimistic, which is the first time in a long time with the Saints

Re: All in 5 good acquisitions at a reasonable trade cost
Outside of the steven deal which in my opinion was completely shocking, we have done very well... very excited for next year.
