Yeah he's been very average for a year or two, but was pretty decent before that, without reaching any great heights.

A few years back now I was thinking how Newnes is one of those players who needs to take the next step up- seemed to have all the right attributes, but in the end has just plodded along in an ordinary team.

I think someone would pick him up as a DFA.
We already tabled an offer.
Now that it's obvious no one wants Newnes, the Saints should give Newnes a revised down offer,
and tell his manager the previous offer has been binned.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

amazing he has eked out a 150 game career. probably would've been cut at any other team.

Maybe offer him a very lowball revised contract that is heavily performance based

GOP and would be ok in a good team, but the challenge is he is in a club full of GOPs.

His last couple of years have been ordinary before that he was serviceable. The fact no one is interested says it all.

Me too. And always shows good leadership - always the first to notice when a player's hurt behind play for example (although why, you might ask, is he so often behind play!!) Still, I think - hope - his own game might have suffered the last couple of years trying to be - and unable to be - whatever the team needed on the day.

He's a nowhere player. There are plenty of VFL regulars better than Newnes. Would have been good for both parties if he could have been moved on. A better run club would have already delisted him.

Tend to agree.

I'll give Newnes the benefit of the doubt because he might be injured. His best is very good and at his worst, he completely goes missing with no in between.

He would have been great under Lyon and would have been an upgrade on players like Eddy.

I think Newnes may end up being a barometer for Ratts coaching and gameplan ability. He used Newnes a bit differently towards the end and maybe he can develop him into a tagger or defensive forward. I think Newnes (and the rest of the team) were stiffled under Richos (lack of) gameplan so maybe something new will spark a player like Newnes.

One thing for certain is that with the influx of new players (hopefully) coming in and finally giving us some depth, players like Newnes are going to be seriously under the pump to play seniors next year. They are going to have to come in hard at pre season to keep their spots.

Ive wondered whether the last few seasons lack of depth has had a detremental effect on players hunger for the game. If you were fit, you were basically always going to get a game, even if form didnt warrant it. This may have also been Richos stubbornness to move on players also, but somethimes there seemed a 'going through the motions' vibe amongst the group. Not saying they weren't putting in 100% but more the mentality of not having the pressure of players underneath demanding a spot. It didnt matter if you had a bad game cause you were going to play the following week regardless.

Given that the overall consensus on Newnes is that he had been subpar for 2 years and that Newnes actually had to drop himself rather than Richo doing it...

Am hoping that Ratten won’t employ a ‘you will play unconditionally no matter how bad’ approach and players could be motivated to play better through fear of being dropped

Pretty radical idea I know

That’s the result of unconditional love though isn’t it. Generally IMO, the criticism has been overblown by the fans at times but by the same token some of Newnes’ performances have also been very bad.

You take a player that performed badly, drop him and have him earn his spot back... fans generally forgive and forget.

Like Mav Weller, when you get into the territory of persevering for so long to the point of incomprehensibility... fans turn on the player.

2016 - Mav was close to my fav player. Loved his toughness and how he went about it.
End of 2017 I was hoping he got dropped every week and was always disappointed when he wasn’t.

Hopefully with coaching that has a clue, Newnes can get back on track towards being the player we all hoped he could be instead of seemingly being applauded for trying

I actually really like Newnes, he had a poor previous year coming off injury plus being played out of position. He started really well this year at the start but then the entire team turned poor.
Its just typical SS members, the whipping boy constantly swirls around, whether its Savage, Geary, Lonie, Gilbert, Dempter, Paddy, etc. When the going gets tuff, we all start turning on each other... really?

It’s not so much confidence in Ratten’s ability but rather further reflecting on just how bad his predecessor really was. The story of Newnes’ actually having to drop himself was somewhat glossed over here by the notion of how mature Jack was and his integrity. But it was yet another example of how literally everybody other than Richo could see the glaringly obvious

Even if it’s only marginally better than the tripe we’ve had to endure over the past 6 years ... we’ll be miles in front of where we’ve been

Yes, there will always be whipping boys. Even if we won the flag there would still be some posters always whinging about certain players. Seems to be in their makeup. Unfortunately with the social media nowadays it can sometimes affect those targeted. Luckily I think most players avoid the numpties on fan sites.
Players are up, players are down. As you say Newnes has been performing a role not necessarily suited to him, and I doubt whether he has been fully fit for a while. Not as good since he got that head whack a couple of years ago.

If he is still with the Saints next year I hope he has a good pre season. In form, he is best 22. Interestingly, he played 5 of the last 6 under Ratts - so Ratts is as poor a judge of his worth as Richo?

It stems from the same place Western Bulldog supporters drew confidence from when Beveridge took over from McCartney. Fingers crossed with similar results.
