We need better ones. I’d have Butler any day over Lonie. No contest

Re: Dan Butler
What about Lonie’s end of 2018? He got contracted on the back of that. In fact you’d say his final 6 games of 2018 and first 6 of 2019 until injury were outstanding.
Not sure why he is so hated?
He isn’t one of our problems... a slow midfield that lacks class is.

Completely agree.
Some fairly ignorant, biased and misinformed comments on here about Lonie. Particularly from Bob. Bordering on trolling.

Agree, Jeez he was good.
Lonie is ok too, but there's no one doing what Milney used to do, anywhere!

Re: Dan Butler
Problem is that our forward line don't kick enough goals- we got away with it in a number of games this season for wins, but otherwise it was our big downfall. It wont get us deep into finals territory as it stands. We need to keep shuffling players through that forward half until we get the ideal mix.

Here's how he compares with Jack Lonie ... (not very well at all).
He also turns the ball over 3.1 times on average from his measly 9 possessions - not good.

He marshalled that forward line of small forwards and I was not hugely surprised that the forward pressure and turn overs in the front half fell away after he was injured .
He did show the way and others followed.
People who are bagging Lonie should go back and watch the first 5 games of the year and watch Lonie’s influence.

Re: Dan Butler
If it's true that we are chasing Dan Butler, then I would say we have cooled on Sam Gray.
We wouldn't be chasing two small forwards. Butler was a key player in the Tiger's 2017 premiership.
He struggled to get a game this year after suffering a fairly serious ankle injury which can take a good amount of time to recover from.
Butler is a pressure forward. In other words, he's good at ripping the ball from the opposition to create a turnover situation.
He then uses his pace to his advantage.
If he can regain what he showed in 2017, then he would be a very good get for us and provide some competition for a place in our team with our other small forwards.
I think the club would like him because he was very good in a very, very good team that won a premiership.
He won't cost us much. There are one or two tigers ahead of him, in Richmond's current best 22, which is why he is seeking opportunity elsewhere.

I’m not sure we would be chasing both to get both. But I would think we would be asking the question, and if one of them goes somewhere else, then we still have one in play. They would most likely have a preference. If I had the choice, I would go Gray personally.

Why would you take the Butler when you could have a ready Maid player instead.

Re: Dan Butler
Confirmed interest in Butler
Small Forwards or those who can play forward we currently have
J.Gresham Mid/Fwd
B. Long
J.Lonie
M.Parker
D.Kent
N.Hind
J.Billings Wing/Fwd
J.Sinclair Wing/Fwd
And we chase Butler and Sam Gray?
How about not chasing more C Graders, get rid of some C Graders and bring in an A Grader or 2

We have the worst recruiters - who don't follow a plan.
I mean, if we had:
2 A grade half back flankers (one for each half back flank) instead of 8 average ones.
2 A grade midfielders instead of 6 C graders
and 1 A grade small forward instead of 6 average ones
- that's 5 A graders in total -
we'd be playing finals and it would cost us less than paying 20 average footballers and trying to squeeze them into those 4 positions.

Re: Dan Butler
Lonie's first 5-6 weeks of 2019 were A-grade for a small forward. No coincidence that the team was playing well during that period.
Small forwards tend to do better when the side is doing better. More opportunities, higher scoring, more time in forward half, better ball use. It all makes the life of a small forward easier.
A fit Lonie in a side that is playing well is a 30-35 goal per year forward. I'm not sure Butler is that good.
To put it another way, it's very hard to see Lonie and Butler playing in the same team. If we are into Butler, I'd look at trading Lonie.

Re: Dan Butler
Worthy late pick. You also get access to Richmond IP. Our forward pressure is not great. The 1%’s and holding a position within a system is what this guy would bring. We have small forwards in Long and Lonie but how good they are in holding ball in is questionable?? Whereas this bloke has proven that in a premiership side. Held out this year by Castagna and Rioli.

We don't need any more small forwards ... unless we are talking about someone of the calibre of Breust, Elliott etc..

Re: Dan Butler
Parker is good with his pressure too.
I'd rather have Parker who can take a mark in the forward line - even Lonie takes more F50 marks than Butler.
The point is (that you're making too) we don't need to keep duplicating and quadruplicating with average footballers.
What is wrong with our recruiters - why can't they see that?

Re: Dan Butler
If Butler does join it will be for peanuts. Worthless pick or DFA.
I believe that he is out of contract this year? Or at least is listed as that.
If not traded then I would imagine that Tiges will just delist him and he will then be a DFA.
Tiges are not going to play him in 2020.
- They now play 2 key forwards and not just they 1 as they did in Butlers glory year
- Higgins will be back in 2020, and they also have Stack wanting a spot back in the 22.
