Re: Ratten gets the gig
He says he will do everything within his power to make all Saints fans proud.
Are you saying you doubt his sincerity?
How can you possibly say he has no vision? He's been coaching the Saints for less than five minutes, relatively speaking.
Now that's he's the senior coach, let's just see how he goes. He deserves that, at the very least, don't you think?

Re: Ratten gets the gig
Just to bring some reality to the situation.....
Most coaches fail.
Most coaches fail to win grand finals.
No one knows if Ratten or Richo or Watters has/had the right stuff.
No one.
Educated guesses.
Hope for the best.
50% of all coaches fail to play finals every year.
Only 1 coach is part of the Grand Final winning team every year.
We tried with Watters and it failed, Richo we tried and he was given too long...Ratten needs a year minimum to bring foundational change.
I hope The Saint Kilda Saints and Brett Ratten all the best!

Re: Ratten gets the gig
Just watched the press conference.
I think he'll be great. Like his attitude and everything else.
Clearly he's learned a lot on the coaching journey.
From being sacked at the Blues to working under Clarkson.
Says it as he sees it. Really like that. Refreshing change from Richo who always said a lot without saying anything.
Look, it's been as bad as it can get for the Saints for longer than I care to remember. And I am an old boy.
Let's give Ratts every chance to see what he can do.

I like listening to Ratten. There's some really genuine about him. I was distracted though and couldn't help thinking about Monty Burns, Smithers and Chief Wiggum.

Re: Ratten gets the gig
Anyone else find the Saints website really rubbish.
Unclear, and ugly. The content, when you finally find it, is often pretty good, but it looks like a budget site.
Nee!

Re: Ratten gets the gig
It will be interesting to see what changes now that Ratten is properly in charge. Whether coincidence or not, we became a much better clearance and ground level team once Ratten took over:
v Bulldogs: +5 clearances (-3 centre, +8 stoppage); +4 contested (-9 frees, -1 marks, +14 ground)
v Melbourne: +9 clearances (+0 centre, +9 stoppage); +9 contested (+4 frees, +4 marks, +1 ground)
v Adelaide: +11 clearances (+7 centre, +4 stoppage); +1 contested (-7 frees, +1 marks, +7 ground)
v Fremantle: -9 clearances (-4 centre, -5 stoppage); +17 contested (+2 frees, +5 marks, +10 ground)
v Carlton: +11 clearances (+3 centre, +8 stoppage); -4 contested (+8 frees, -10 marks, -2 ground)
v Sydney: +2 clearances (-4 centre, +6 stoppage); 0 contested (+1 frees, -6 marks, +5 ground)
Total:
+29 clearances (+4.8 per game)
-1 centre clearances (-.2 per game)
+30 stoppage clearances (+5 per game)
+27 contested posession (+4.5 per game)
-1 free kicks (-.2 per game)
-7 contested marks (-1.2 per game)
+35 ground ball gets (+5.8 per game)
While the level of competition wasn't great, I would point out that Footscray, Melbourne, Fremantle and Carlton were all net positive clearance teams. Whether we can be consistently competitive in those areas over the course of a whole season remains to be seen. Whether we can turn clearances and contested footy into goals and wins with our ball use is probably an even bigger question mark.
In any case, I'm really happy with this coaching hire, much more than the last one. With Ratten, there's a clear recent history of success. The fact that other Hawthorn assistants have gone on to have great success at Richmond, Footscray, West Coast and now Brisbane leaves me quite comfortable that it's not all Clarko and the list they managed to assemble. I'd much rather be going forward with somebody from inside that culture than anyone from outside it.

For the record I think you have no idea about elite sports people and to suggest a Saints great will sook and never forgive us is pathetic and reflective of what you would do and think, not a former champion of the club.
If he was best person for the job he would have got it, he didn't so he moves on.
Harvey never came across as a sook or a whinger to me, you on the other hand....

Dont get sucked in by that idiot
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

Re: Ratten gets the gig
I'm delighted with Brett Ratten's appointment as the new coach of St Kilda.
At the press conference he spoke candidly and with humour, consistent with his vast experience as a champion player and good coaching record at both Carlton and assistant to Clarkson at Hawthorn. I have also observed that he doesn't hold back on players who let the team done, as in the spray he gave Carlisle when the latter had succumbed to provocation and gave away an easy goal, at a time when the game was still in the balance.
He fulfills the type of coach that Nick Riewoldt stated recently he prefers - a bad cop who drives his players to get the best out of them and I feel sure he will get the players to be totally accountable and play an attacking, aggressive style of game which is the hallmark of all successful teams. The days of mediocrity at St Kilda are over.....about time!
I think it is also important to recall that Tom Mitchell, when he won his Brownlow Medal, paid special tribute to Brett Ratten's influence in improving his game - you could not ask for a better recommendation, and you'd like to think that the likes of Billings, Steele, Clarke, Gresham, Dunstan will take the next step in 2020 and get into AA selection form.
