Father and Son.
I met John McIntosh at the physio’s today and asked him how come Ashley wound up at the Eagles. He said no-one from St Kilda contacted the family about Ashley playing for the Saints, in spite of his Teal Cup performances.

only played 51 games for saints......father son pick not available due to games played
Ashley pick 112.....so overlooked by us and many others
John was sadly missed in 1971 GF after injury in semi.....

Re: Father and Son.
You met the complete footballer. He arrived at the club when recruiters (Drake and Huggins) knew their arse from their elbow.

Re: Father and Son.
It was absolutely a father-son selection. Pick 112 was used because the rules at the time allowed it. Under our current system, West Coast couldn't possibly have any claims to a father-son from the Saints, but at that time they, along with other new clubs in the the AFL were given a free shot at players whose father had played at a Victorian club but grown up in the state the new AFL club was from. Completely outrageous, of course, and we were the unlucky ones who got screwed over.

Re: Father and Son.
Less dramatically, the father son link was through Claremont where we recruited John from. West coast were smart and we had Lockett Loewe and Brian Wilson . Macintosh was a forward then.cwrcyn wrote: ↑Tue 03 Sep 2019 8:04pm It was absolutely a father-son selection. Pick 112 was used because the rules at the time allowed it. Re: Father and Son.
Barry Lawrence played around 5 Seconds for the Bears when he was ancient to allow Steve Lawrence to go straight there. Ironically he ended up at St Kilda anyway and had a few issues.

Re: Father and Son.
Barry Lawrence at the bears?
He’d have been around 43 when they started... pretty sure he wasn’t still going around in 87
He finished at StK in about 75

Re: Father and Son.
John McIntosh was an absolute star. If he did not get that semi final injury, we win the 71 flag. I recall him hitting Allan Davis on the chest with stab passes against the Pies at Moorabbin in 71. Although he only played 51 games, I have him on the bench in my team of the best Saints players I ever saw.perfectionist wrote: ↑Tue 03 Sep 2019 7:31pmYou met the complete footballer. Re: Father and Son.
Absolutely agree George27. He was a superstar who could play in any position. I remember the Collingwood game where Davis kicked 10 I think...most, as you said, as a result of McIntosh hitting him on the chest with a stab pass!! He would definitely be in my starting 18 of the best I have seen!George27 wrote: ↑Tue 03 Sep 2019 10:21pmJohn McIntosh was an absolute star. Re: Father and Son.
I remember standing on the packed blue-metal terraces at Moorabbin, as a teenager, delighting in his skills, especially his ability to stab pass the footy effortlessly with either foot. He was a great reader of the play who tended to float when he marked as he gripped the ball. Shaking hands with him today marvellous. He was the consummate footballer.
His hands are massive! He remembered my wife’s family from his farming days in Beverley.

He was a beauty, cut down in his prime. Still remember those stab passes!saintkev wrote: ↑Tue 03 Sep 2019 11:43pm I remember standing on the packed blue-metal terraces at Moorabbin, as a teenager, delighting in his skills, especially his ability to stab pass the footy effortlessly with either foot.
