John was sadly missed in 1971 GF after injury in semi.....

It was absolutely a father-son selection. Pick 112 was used because the rules at the time allowed it. Under our current system, West Coast couldn't possibly have any claims to a father-son from the Saints, but at that time they, along with other new clubs in the the AFL were given a free shot at players whose father had played at a Victorian club but grown up in the state the new AFL club was from. Completely outrageous, of course, and we were the unlucky ones who got screwed over.

Barry Lawrence played around 5 Seconds for the Bears when he was ancient to allow Steve Lawrence to go straight there. Ironically he ended up at St Kilda anyway and had a few issues.

John McIntosh was an absolute star. If he did not get that semi final injury, we win the 71 flag. I recall him hitting Allan Davis on the chest with stab passes against the Pies at Moorabbin in 71. Although he only played 51 games, I have him on the bench in my team of the best Saints players I ever saw.

Absolutely agree George27. He was a superstar who could play in any position. I remember the Collingwood game where Davis kicked 10 I think...most, as you said, as a result of McIntosh hitting him on the chest with a stab pass!! He would definitely be in my starting 18 of the best I have seen!

I remember standing on the packed blue-metal terraces at Moorabbin, as a teenager, delighting in his skills, especially his ability to stab pass the footy effortlessly with either foot. He was a great reader of the play who tended to float when he marked as he gripped the ball. Shaking hands with him today marvellous. He was the consummate footballer.
His hands are massive! He remembered my wife’s family from his farming days in Beverley.
