It's a midfield that consistently wins contested possession and clearance counts so something is working. We may be just a Brad Hill and Jack Bytel away from better 50m entries.BarryGrogan wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 9:49pmHow do we get quality mids though?
We have lots of talls, and the worst midfield in the comp by a stretch.
We've had Bruce for 5 years and it's netted f*** all because our midfield can't provide opportunities.
If Bruce goes, we have King and Membrey still - and a markedly improved midfield.

Naughton was AA CHB in his draft year ... and recruited as a key back. He’s playing a forward because they have Schache and that’s allsaintsRrising wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 11:41amWhat is there to carry with two quite different key forwards and a third tall as talented as Membrey. Doggies are reportedly after Bruce. Do you think that they will then banish Naughton to the backline?

You misunderstood my intent, which was that the Doggies want to have two good key forwards. We should too in both Bruce and Max....and not Max and Ryder who will be a poor key forward.
Bruce and Naughton to both play forward. Bruce is an upgrade on Schache. Makes the Doogies forward line pretty awesome.
Bruce, Max and the third tall Membrey would be a great set-up for us.

Re: Josh Bruce to be traded?
That 'Decoy' role depends alot on there being some very good delivery. Hmm, never mind, at least he'll be getting some experiencestkfc1 wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 7:54pmAgree. Max is a beanpole and will find it out hard against most other teams #1 defender for the next year or two. Due to his height though he'll demand the #1 or #2 defender which means Bruce and Members gets relegated down the line of defenders and can get off the chain a bit. Members is already facing #1 defenders at times. Imagine if he only had to deal with 3rd or 4th defenders. He'll kick 60+ a season , IF we ever manage to fix our appalling F50 entries.barneyboyz wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 1:46pmHaving King is exactly why we need to keep Josh. All in all though, we could use them all effectively in that forward line, as well as Membrey. Both Kings are very agile/mobile and so are Bruce and Membrey
The little blokes would need to be very good though and provide much of the chase
I see Max playing more a decoy role next year. His job will be to clear space and draw defenders away for Bruce and Members to work in. Defenders wont be able to let King run around unchecked, again purely for his height. It gives us so much more flexability which and is why I believe Bruce needs to stay.
Hopefully Max can make an impact early and really give our forward line a better dynamic as its so predictable right now.

His goal kicking average for the Saints puts a few of the small forwards to shame these days

Goro was no small forward.
He was a mark - kick player
Membrey without all the running

I think you might have heard that from within.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Josh Bruce to be traded?
He was a bit more than that. He had some special skills and was a wasted talent.
Could have been a real player, but I think he just did not work hard enough and probably liked to enjoy life too much. Didn't have the focus to really make the most of his natural talent that he had in spades.
Yes could have been possibly as good.
He certainty in his short time with us had some games where you thought yes we have a real talent here. Sadly not in the end.

So Bruce for Bradley Scheer of the Suns it is then.
Seems a lot for a rookie though......

Hmmm would hate to lose Bruce, but that is one scenario I could live with.
Nee!
Re: Josh Bruce to be traded?
You must be kidding. In any other good side at his best he would be top 5 in the Colman medal. Super effort and commitment!
Get realistic he isn’t going anywhere.

Re: Josh Bruce to be traded?
Played against Con in the 90s when he was at Bentlieigh, and his brother George (at the time a better player due to age)
He was a very traditional FF, albeit undersized. Amazing hands, freakish skills and super lazy.
Worse than playing footy against him, was facing him in cricket! Very sharp opening bowler.

Re: Josh Bruce to be traded?
I wonder if this talk of trading Bruce comes from the stubborn perception of some that Marshall will be a forward long term. It would explain why we've gone after number one rucks in Goldstein and Ryder. The emergence of Battle and Wilkie might have lessened Carlisle's value in the club's eyes as well.
They could be looking for something along these lines next year:
B: Geary, Wilkie, Tomlinson
HB: Clark, Battle, Savage
C: Hill, Steele, Hannebery
HF: Billings, Marshall, Hind
F: Parker, King, Membrey
Foll: Ryder, Gresham, Ross
Int: Coffield, Dunstan, Paton, Sinclair
Parker could be Lonie, Long, Kent - whoever is in form.

Yes they could be.
Backward step though, as both up forward and in the ruck as it makes each department weaker. So that is a double negative to me.
Also means that your two key forwards are tall and not as mobile as Bruce.
PS: That backline is bit undersized when we run in to Brown, Lynch, Harry etc.
Marshall is mobile for a ruckman yes, but not as mobile as Bruce is.

Ryder should only require a 4th rounder or less.I would be surprised if GWS matched.
So with both Carlisle and Bruce gone you would hope that only occurs because they have some specific QUALITY players that will be joining. So question here is WHO does Lethers have in mind?
Steven if he goes may gain a second rounder or even Constable.
