Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
I know diddly about him, but apart from Achilles/ankles for a season, a patch of iffy form in 2013, Is it fair to say he is pretty resilient and (fingers crossed) and no concussion issues thus far.
I’ve always hated but admired the Hawks when they raised eyebrows getting ageing tall boys who turned out to be very useful.
So I’m saying, good job Saints. Fair enough.

Pretty much correct there Joffa. At least the evaluation comes during or straight after there games not when we know they are out the door.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Thu 29 Aug 2019 11:13amAgree Curly, supporters are only qualified to evaluate the performance of umpires, not players.CURLY wrote: ↑Thu 29 Aug 2019 10:10amSupporter group potting a player that is leaving their club. s*** thats the first time that's happened.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 11:02pm Reading what Port Fans think, it is that he is almost cooked and certainly not a forward. Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
It certainly will be interesting how they deal with Max. I'm not 100% on Ryder and hope they make the right choices.mad saint guy wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 11:20pmI think he should be played sparingly. King has now basically missed 2 years of footy with injury and will still be a rake thin teenager next year. We have all seen talented young talls played too often, too early and have that hamper them for the rest of their career. 8-10 senior games for King would be ideal IMObarneyboyz wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 1:50pmDo you think King isn't going to play for 2 years? If he gets through the pre-season, I reckon he'd be a monty for Rnd 1mad saint guy wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 1:11pm Could well be a placeholder for King for a year or two. Ryder isn't great as a forward but we clearly do need another tall up there, and a combination of Marshall and Ryder in the ruck would be one of the best in the competition. I'd be fine with getting Ryder if he comes cheap. Bring in Ryder, Hill, Martin and Tomlinson at the cost of Steven, Acres, Dunstan, Lonie, Newnes and some draft picks (Roberton and McCartin done).
B: Wilkie, Carlisle, Webster
HB: Clark, Battle, Tomlinson
C: Hill, Steele, Ross
HF: Billings, Bruce, Hind
F: Martin, Membrey, Ryder
Foll: Marshall, Gresham, Hannebery
Int: Bytel, Coffield, Parker, Sinclair
Still probably not a finals side but it's one I'd be happy to watch
I reckon of all the games we played this year, the one that might have suited Max best was the Port game in China. I think this because they had some very mobile and not so heavy talls running around

Ryder is still a AFL standard ruckman.

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Do people think it's 1980? Ruckman resting in the forward pocket?
Please.
If/when we finally get Marshall some help, they'll rotate between centre bounces, loose man in defence, FF and the bench.
We'll be down a midfielder or a ' utility' such as Newnes from our rotation - but we inprove our ruck position across the ground 10-fold!

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Port are offloading Lycett after 1 year too though!
A premiership star and he's played in the ressies there and wants to leave.
Maybe Port isn't the ideal place for Ruckman for whatever reason?

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
The theme emerging in this thread are yes he could play as assist ruck and sit in the forward but he’s not really a good forward!!!
No ones actually willing to say he’s still a good or even decent player.
This reeks of mistake

I will call it and say he is a very good player. I'm very happy that our number one ruckman Marshall has this kind of back up if we in fact get him.

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Ok. Here is a question for you? When was the last time an All Australian ruckman played for the Saints? Paddy Ryder is an elite ruckman. He didn't have a great year in 2019 but the Power made it clear he wasn't really welcome when they recruited Lycett.
As to not being a forward. Have a look at his highlights reel. He can be a forward when he wants to be.
A new club and a new atmosphere might just be the tonic needed for him to shine. Dylan Roberton was pretty ordinary for Fremantle and look what happened to him when he came to the Saints.
And no I am not suggesting there is any direct correlation here. All I am saying is that Paddy Ryder is AA. He could be again. If we recruit him let's hope so. A lot of people are pretty negative about taking him. He is streets ahead of Hickey, Longer and Pierce in ability.
There is risk with any player we might take on. But I think Paddy is worth it in my view.

Port do have a fair ruck brigade coming on. The young Ladhams has emerged and they also have the young Frampton and Hayes.

Ryder is not the answer - he's the question.
How dumb and short-sighted are our recruiters??

No the answer is Marshall. Ryder is part of the solution.

What does Rowan think?
No...c'mon! Seriously! If the football department has a plan and that plan involves Rowan, why don't they ask Rowan whether he wants Paddy in the team or not?

It’s dumb
But hey, it’s StKilda
No idea how to build a team.... already one failed attempt this decade, trying a different approach (wonder who they are copying this time?)
They’ve got no idea

Yes indeed i's not the 1980's.BarryGrogan wrote: ↑Thu 29 Aug 2019 12:33pm Do people think it's 1980? Ruckman resting in the forward pocket?

The ideal ruckman today also racks up disposals.
Ryder across his career has averaged 11. 5 disposals and 3.8 marks per game.
His last two years has seen this decline to under 10 and 3 marks per game.
PS> I think Newnes in 2020 , even if he remains, will get squeezed out regardless of the midfield regardless of whether we play 1 or 2 ruckmen.
So we are more talking about not getting games into Bytel if Ryder squeezes out a mid..

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Scour the state leagues and find someone who's got some potential. Surely, there must be some talent out there. I wouldn't cough up anything for a 32 year old whose current club no longer rates. It's clear we need a back up for Marshall, but is this the answer. My guess is Essendon will be his choice, anyway.

If it is it’s a pretty piss poor comparison.skeptic wrote: ↑Thu 29 Aug 2019 1:11amI do believe this is a reference to who we traded our first round pick for in that off-season... BM was very critical of the move even before it went south
There is absolutely no similarities in this trade to that trade... contract, money, level of draft picks required, position.
What is it about this trade BM that compares it to 2009? Getting disturbingly murky for me...

I'd prefer Rhys Stanley to Ryder, he's a lot quicker, get's plenty of possessions and could play in the same team as Marshall. And both are capable forwards.

Yep let's get all of our discarded rucks back
McEvoy Stanley and Hickey, there's plenty of experience there to guide Marshall
We got it right first time round
...then some idiot didn't see any value in them

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Stanley has been dropped multiple times this year...
Hickey had been average at saints and his trading allowed a decent pick in + Marshall opportunity.
What is wrong here?
So much outrage for a backup ruckman that will cost little in terms of trade.
Can also coach.
It’s as if we are recruiting a washed up Matthew Clarke or redrafting Adam Patterson...
