Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
I went to the north and port game with friends a couple weeks back......
Ben Brown kicked 10
Quite a few in the press gave goldstein BOG even though brown kicked 10
Ryder was slaughtered......looked very slow......infact looked washed up
Was so hoping we would not target him.....
would have to be for a very late pick
disappointing news

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
I hope they're not planning to use a Marshall/Ryder combination in the forward line as a replacement for Bruce.

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Ryder is not an answer. I am hoping that the recruiting department will surprise and pull some decent rabbits out of the hat. Very few of the players being linked to the Saints so far are going to take us forward. It's early days and hopefully they can keep targets under wraps but not liking what is being touted openly so far (apart from Hill).

Seriously hope not will bring no value and end up playing for Sandy.
Another brilliant target by our recruiters targeting slow players past their prime.
We put Bruce up for trade then recruit a 32yo .

Really. Great get to support Rowan
Seriously guys if Marshal went down this year it would have been Acres and Rowe rucking. We need a backup ruckman, Ryders perfect. Can only help support Marshall in his development, you all have to get rid of those dark clouds it makes u all very unattractive...

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
I agree with The Recruit, Ryder is not recruited to replace or diminish Marshall. Two years working together at training and in some (not all) matches can only make Marshall better. I'm guessing we will also use a late draft pick & a rookie pick for two young ruckmen. The Recruit wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 10:12am Really. Great get to support Rowan

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Do we also recruit a backup young ruck to develop or do we keep getting cheap supporting acts to give Marshall a chop out when injured?
If we get Ryder for next to nothing I'm OK with it otherwise I'm not.

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Need to get actual strength in the team, plus experience on field, not watching from the sidelines. Probably a good move, as I think Ryder wasn't happy at PA and was playing accordingly.

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Ryder is ideal.
He won't hog Marshall's ruck time, and can go forward when resting if required.
Won't cost much either.
Great way to support Marshall's development instead of stifling it.
Big win for us.

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
So is it more important to have
A reasonable Ruckman for 20% and poor forward for 60%
Or a
Poor Ruckman for 20% and reasonable forward for 60%
Not withstanding the fact that Ryder is 32yo
This will be the straw that breaks the camels back for me. Last time I was this disgruntled with the club was 2009.

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Yes Ryder can go forward BUT he is not a good key forward. Hell he is not even an average key forward. I cannot fathom why people think having Ryder play as a key forward next year is a good move.BarryGrogan wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 11:19am Ryder is ideal.

If it is Ryder in Bruce out in our Best 22, this is amazingly bad and smacks of having the two most important people in our List Management as "L-Platers" who have previously had no involvement in the jobs they are tasked with.
Ryder is only going to get worse and is not a key forward.
Bruce is now entering for a CHF his best years.
FFS Marshall does not need to be protected. He has clearly thrived on the challenge of being our No1 Ruck.
No1 Rucks are historically like this. They want to be the Big Dog, and when they are you get the best out of them. Marshall is a Big Dog.
How did the Gawn /Preuss combination go this year?

Potentially a pretty dynamic combo between him and Marshall. Won’t have to cringe seeing Brucey go up against monsters anymore either.

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
It’s so stupid
That it’s something StK will do
It’s a wonder we don’t try and convince Sandilands to come out of retirement?!
The only positions we don’t need are Ruck and Key Forward
We are recruiting in a has been Ruckman and trading out a good key forward

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Ryder had a poor year in 2019, but on six occasions in 2018 he had 40+ hitouts. In 2017, he was All-Australian.
He might be diminishing as a #1 ruckman, but he's got loads to offer with us in helping prepare Rowan Marshall.
A big pre-season would be fantastic for him. I think he can have a positive impact for us in a similar way to Steven King, who did a great job mentoring Ben McEvoy.

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Very similar to the Stephan King recruitment. Ryder us surplus to Port and played accordingly. Great pick up as a back up ruck.

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
So you really believe that Ryder is going to be a "back-up" ruck and play at Sandy for most games?
No what will happen is one of:
- 2 rucks will share sitting on the pine and we go with one less mid and impair our midfield rotation
- We play Paddy instead of Bruce as a key forward for most of the game and have a less effective forward line
- Max gets to twiddle his thumbs at Sandy

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
No I think we can play both. Marshall can rest forward he can also play as a ruck rover playing behind the ball. Ryder is also capable of playing behind the ball.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 12:34pmSo you really believe that Ryder is going to be a "back-up" ruck and play at Sandy for most games?

If you play Ryder and Marshall you either have to;
- Play one less genuine key forward
- Play one less mid
Bruce is a better key forward than either Marshall or Ryder.
Ryder is also only a stop-gap. Stop-gap thinking is not how you win games and moreso when you move out a good player to gain a stop-gap player.
This deal smack of Lethers wanting to be seen as a player to help line up his next career move.
We are a team in need of genuine rebuilding (which cannot be done in just one off-season). We are not a team that is topping up to win a flag next year.

Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
We need a ruckman we certainly need one that can pinch hit in key position roles. We also need a long term project ruckman as well. Ryder is a very capable deep forward and can play down back.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 12:54pmCURLY wrote: ↑Wed 28 Aug 2019 12:41pmNo I think we can play both. Re: Ryder to Saints (two year deal)
Could well be a placeholder for King for a year or two. Ryder isn't great as a forward but we clearly do need another tall up there, and a combination of Marshall and Ryder in the ruck would be one of the best in the competition. I'd be fine with getting Ryder if he comes cheap. Bring in Ryder, Hill, Martin and Tomlinson at the cost of Steven, Acres, Dunstan, Lonie, Newnes and some draft picks (Roberton and McCartin done).
B: Wilkie, Carlisle, Webster
HB: Clark, Battle, Tomlinson
C: Hill, Steele, Ross
HF: Billings, Bruce, Hind
F: Martin, Membrey, Ryder
Foll: Marshall, Gresham, Hannebery
Int: Bytel, Coffield, Parker, Sinclair
Still probably not a finals side but it's one I'd be happy to watch
