Plenty of fire. He did pull Carlisle aside couple of weeks ago for his silly free kicks.

I think coaching wise he’ll be good - plus you can’t discount the hawthorn experience. The big issue is that this isn’t a flag challenging list. Lots of good players but not enough A graders in the midfield.

can you name the last premiership coach that came to the club with previous senior coaching experience?
since leigh matthews there's been just one, and his next team sacked him when they sat bottom on 1-7 in his third year.
Who was it?
Malthouse at Carlton?

Ratten

But wouldn’t be surprised if everyone is calling for his head in 2021.

I'm still pissed-off with those Scott brothers for their behavior toward Riewoltd when he was a kid, so that's a no from me.

Ratten is probably the safe choice, but Robert Harvey is the higher risk, potentially higher reward prodigal son.

Not sure who gets my vote.
If you are referring to the game Roo broke his collar bone and was bumped by Michael and C.Scott, B.Scott did not play in that match.
Yeah, but who threw Lenny into the fence?

Being a successful line coach is good, but having proof that you can inspire 40 or so men between 18 - 30 and communicate and execute a game plan with them through your line coaches is very important. Harves hasn’t done this yet.

I don’t think it matters what level you do it at either. But IMO he needs to tick that box in order to get a head gig.

Ratts for me.

As a player he was successful.
As a head coach he has been successful
As a line coach he has been extremely successful.
He’s been under some of the coaching greats of the game.
He has plenty of real life experience.

But that's like going to a job interview and the interviewer says do you have any experience.. No I don't .. Well how am I going to get the experience if no one gives me a go.. So by your book if you haven't coached a senior team you won't get a gig... All the best coaches never coached until they did..

Happy with Ratts, Harvey or Ro$$.

Or Sam Mitchell or Lenny Hayes.

But not Scott.

The concerns:

Ratts. Is he really much different from Richo? Some weak individual efforts against Adelaide and Carlton were troubling.

Harvey. Is he forceful and charismatic enough to be a head coach?

Lyon. Too divisive, too much baggage? Does he still have the fire in the belly?

Mitcdhell and Hayes: Too early, it seems.

If I was hiring I’d go with the guy with experience, over the guy without.

And if I didn’t get a job because of lack of experience, I’d go get some.

It’s a very different beast coaching these days. It’s a combination man manager, psychologist, media personality and footy coach. Line coaching is very different from running the whole show.

Ratts has been envolved in 4 premierships, he is almost a risk free appointment.
Harves is the romantics choice but he is risky...we need to get this appointment right.

Most of the successful premiership coaches have coached their own teams prior to a gig as a senior AFL coach. Whether that's VFL, SANFL, WAFL or even country or suburban leagues.

A guy who has experience should also do a good job from the outset with the list achieving its maximum potential early in his tenure. Most rookies take a a few years to learn the ropes, unless you have a champion list with proven A grade leadership perhaps

We can't afford to get a rookie who might take 5-6 years to come good. It will cost us in terms of losing opportunities to attract good players. It will cost us if we get a rookie and the team is mediocre because that's not appealing for free agents and in terms of retaining some of the young stars on our list.

Therefore, Ratts is the better option than Bob imo

Lyon's run his race with the media. It's ok to be a surly prick when you are on top of the heap, but behaving like a petulant child whenever facing the press when the side you are coaching is middling wears pretty thin.

He carries on like a dick head. He does.

I wouldn't be surprised if he came back and coaches St Kilda next year.
