The Saints team that didn’t play on Saturday night
Yes, the list manager has his work cut out for him at the end of the season, but we actually have a pretty deep list of players.
Was listening to the Footyology podcast this morning and Mark Fine compiled this list to make an entire team from our senior players who didn’t play in the against Melbourne:
B McKenzie Joyce Roberton
HB Webster Battle Geary
C White Armitage Phillips
HF Kent King Marsh
F Parker McCartin Young
Followers Longer Hannebery Steven
Interchange Pearce Austin Rice Rowe
That is insane! A great observation by Finey.

Apologies for the misspelling of Pierce. Not sure why the moderators made it that one can’t edit their OP. I guess it’s so they can take pleasure in suspending people for having meltdowns after the team loses or something

- Can't see Roberton; McCartin or Armo being on our list at the start of 2020;
- Unlikely that both Longer and Pierce will be on our list in 2020 - concussed and out of contract does not make for a solid future;
- Grave misgivings about McKenzie at AFL level (certainly as a small defender) and I don;t think it's a co-incidence that our distribution by foot out of defence has improved markedly in the last 2 weeks;
- I'm sure I'll get slaughtered for saying so, but I'd love it if Gears became a depth player - that would show true improvement in our list depth;
- Can't see how B White (much to my chagrin) will not be on another club's list in 2020;
- Rowe was only a depth player and I suspect, will be cut at season's end;
- Rice is interesting - he seems to play very well at VFL level but looks too slow at AFL level. Maybe he'd be a serviceable player in a good team?; and
- The remainder are actually ok and I could see being useful (or better) at AFL level
My two bobs worth anyway ...

There are 44 (?) players on a list, so.... can’t all teams do this?

Yes they can - but the OP point was that it would actually be a serviceable team - I think - as opposed to previous years where there were definite list cloggers involved.

Re: The Saints team that didn’t play on Saturday night
I agree with you on all points in regards to these players, but the fact is all these players are on our list and make up a team you could get away with selecting for a list of 22, if they were all fit.Saintmatt wrote: ↑Mon 29 Jul 2019 11:26am

Re: The Saints team that didn’t play on Saturday night
Interesting post but the depth angle just says we have many similar type players who can’t impact games ie no superstars.
I’d like to see more of White but he is a bit overrated on here.
Only Steven, Hannebery and Roberton would walk into our current team and would make a difference.

Re: The Saints team that didn’t play on Saturday night
Its actually a lineup that would be competitive and probably a better 22 then Gold Coast's best 22.

Our best available 22 only just managed to fall over the line against them twice.

Re: The Saints team that didn’t play on Saturday night
Roberton is aiming to be playing in 2020. Said so on the Saints insider podcast.
Doctors cannot diagnose what his issue is, so with the installed defib, they are comfortable with him playing.

Re: The Saints team that didn’t play on Saturday night
New rules that allowed players out for the season to be replace by players in the supplementary draft and mi-season draft.
Marsh, Rowe and Mayo.
It is also means 3 extra to delist at years end. Marsh and Mayo look like keepers. Rowe to go.
Then we need to delist whomever are to draft in.
So with a minimum of 3 draftees that is 5 players to go plus Rowe.

Re: The Saints team that didn’t play on Saturday night
realistically aside from the hb line and steven that list would be smashed by the Suns.
of the rest we have king (fingers crossed), parker & austin (maybe), mckenzie & kent (depth).
the rest all have very real injury concerns or are simply not afl grade.
if somehow the gods played on our side and roberton, mccartin and hannas became fully fit footballers (add king and bytel) then we have something to talk about. fingers crossed.

Re: The Saints team that didn’t play on Saturday night
Sad is it may be - there is actually no spot in our team for Paddy right now. As badly as we've been playing - I don't think we've missed him. Our ills wouldn't be fixed by his magical inclusion anyway.desertsaint wrote: ↑Mon 29 Jul 2019 3:32pm realistically aside from the hb line and steven that list would be smashed by the Suns.

Poor old Rice on the bench in the 2nd team, must be really cooked.

Re: The Saints team that didn’t play on Saturday night
It would be hard to pick Steven to displace someone from the seniors right now unless there's an injury. Some are looking at Jack from his previous form and not this season where he has been mostly out of action, and he looked average at Sandy on the weekend.

Re: The Saints team that didn’t play on Saturday night
We actually have 48 on the list if you count Alabakis, but we still only have to delist a mandatory 6 players as Albakis is on included in a separate category.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Mon 29 Jul 2019 1:45pmNew rules that allowed players out for the season to be replace by players in the supplementary draft and mi-season draft.

I would imagine that they will keep him. Though reports on him to date post-arrival do not sound that promising.

Re: The Saints team that didn’t play on Saturday night
forgot Bytel as well - but he could be left out of a list having never played
the way I see it - there are only a few on that list that couldnt be training the house down
you can be recovering from concussion but still fit
no excuse for Steven to be over weight
and Im cutting King and Roberton a fair amount of slack
Sso injuries aside, head traumas aside, heart issues aside - I really feel the saint MUST be ruthless at years end,
we have put the decision of playing future in the hands of way too many players the last few years - I think the balance must come back to the clubs favour this year
