Give Ratts The Job
Ok. I am going to make an early call on this. Forget Brad Scott and especially forget Ross Lyon whose name shouldn't be mentioned in any way with St Kilda after what he did to us.
Ratts is the man for the job.
But wait, I hear you say, how can you make that call based on two games of winning footy?
Fair enough question, and the Adelaide game may give us even more of an answer.
Here are my reasons:
1) We are playing a brand of footy I've never seen us play. No I am not kidding. We are playing with flair and freedom. Players are being permitted to be decision makers on field. They are not being over coached and they are not being suffocated. And it shows.
Ratts says he hasn't changed the game plan by much. I think he was saying that out of respect for Richo. He's a humble guy Brett Ratten. But he has given the players some creative freedom on field and they are responding. Ratts, please keep doing it so that they can keep doing it.
2) When was the last time we kicked 100 points? I will tell you. A year ago. Some of last night's stats were ridiculous. For example forward 50 entries. We were close to a ratio of 2 to 1 for every D entry. Our turnovers were equally ridiculous. We scored 13 out of 15 goals from turnovers. Seriously, are we talking about the same footy team?
That is due to something called pressure. We've displayed it on occasions in the past but we have never ( rarely if ever) turned that pressure into scoreboard impact. Last night we did. Hallelujah.
3) Ratts is getting the best out of our young and not so young guys. Look at the games of Hunter Clark and Nick Coffield. Hunter was unstoppable against the Bulldogs. Not quite as dominant last night but was still very, very good. Coffield developing his game very nicely indeed. Both are showing glimpses of why they went so high in the draft. Really like the way he handled Carlisle after his lapse in judgement. Ratts has a rapport with the players and as a supporter I am loving it.
And as for Seb Ross, being Captain certainly agrees with him. Seb has played many 30 + possession games of footy. But he's lacked impact on the contest IMO. Last night he had both and some. He was brilliant. Those two goals he kicked were gems. Just loved the way he went about it.
Yes, we have a big test coming up. The Crows in Adelaide. Our record against them doesn't bear talking about. Adelaide has been a grave yard for us. But for once I am actually looking forward to this contest as much as I hope the players are.
Adelaide has dropped form but you can guarantee Betts will be back in the side plus one or two others who've given us a real touch up in the past.
If we beat the Crows, the call for Ratts to be coach will turn into a shouting match. I, for one, will be doing plenty of shouting.

The other point I forgot to make.
I am really loving the post match press conferences.
Brett Ratten talks like a normal person. He says what he thinks without sounding like a cliche.
His footy observations are interesting to listen to.
Such a refreshing change.

Re: Give Ratts The Job
I thought it was interesting when Ratten said something like, the message is basically the same, maybe it's delivered differently. Ratten seems more humble, honest and realistic than Richo and his message may be more measured with the view of the playing group in mind rather than impersonal and dictate. He wants the backing of the playing group. Hard to find a lot of evidence, even when his back was against the wall, that Richo could fake those qualities. With a young list and a lack of high end experience, Ratts' approach appears wiser. Richo lost the playing group when Montagna and Riewoldt retired and only regained it after returning from his course this preseason. He seemed to resort to his old ways, at least selection wise, when we had a few early wins and he got his tale up again. Ratts has to be best placed for the job I reckon. But I feel we need to win every match to keep him.

Does he win games?
That is all that matters. The next 4 weeks is almost like a job interview for Ratta. He is going pretty good so far.

Re: Give Ratts The Job
He said he couldn't believe the lack of coaching and development that he encountered when he was fiirst appointed as well as the lack of knowledge with the St Kilda team. He said we were way behind in understanding how other teams train and especially the other teams' gameplans. He was so glad that a professional of the calibre of Billy Slater was there in preseason to help teach some of the players to back themselves and be accountable as leaders.
He said he was worried that the hierarchy had waited too long to get rid of Richo and he thought that some of the behaviours and reluctance to back themselves would be difficult to change. He's pretty confident that he can weed out most of their bad habits in his first full year as head coach. He said the 'sum of all parts' was corporate speak bs as far as he was concerned and he was determined to make a difference to this outfit and lead the Saints to sustained finals appearances in the next 2-3 years

Re: Give Ratts The Job
Very, very good player; midfielder. Proven good coach and assistant; humble persona but tough and confident; has had real kicks in the proverbial guts through his sacking by the Club he gave blood and sweat for, and the very sad loss of a son; we immediately showed improvement when he was brought on board; has been excellent last two games i.e. in real life not in speculation second guessing world: form against Dogs really stands up. Melbourne came to play, we gave them a start, gift goals and still handed them a beating. I think he has made it easy for the subcommittee. If he doesn't get the job then there is an available superstar coach out there no one knows about yet. Subcommittee's first agenda item is dismissing any bid SL makes to install B. Scott - who Teague has shown up spectacularly. Oh - something else our coaches haven't had for as long as I can remember, Brett has a good sense of humour and knows himself completely - no mawkish introspection there. Not small, but a perfectly formed coach nevertheless.

they'd be stunned and embarrassed, because it's a situation that THEY allowed to happen under their watch.
Nobody likes an outsider coming in and telling you what you did wrong.
An outside consultant might say all that, but they only have a look around, say their stuff, and go.
I don't see the club wanting to employ him if he's gonna be critical of how they go about things.
Watters did something similar.
Lethers will NOT like him at all because he's not going to be a puppet.
I imagine Ratts throwing Lethers out of the box one day.
Look, he put a blowtorch to the club with some inconvenient truths that they wouldn't want to hear.
He told them 'you guys just WASTED 5 1/2 years'
They won't like that.
Will he get the gig after all that?

Re: Give Ratts The Job
He could lose the next 4, giving him 33% W/L. There's 6 years with an option of a 7th if we win a final.
If he wins his first 10 as coach, the last four of those could be finals.
