The compromise introduced by the Draft (and Free Agency) sees perennial cellar dwellers virtually awaiting other Clubs to age and fail despite Free Agency and the period of success being incentive in the Free Agency marketplace

But every player gets a year older, year by year

So the day comes - eventually

But the period of competing is extended courtesy of Free Agency

That is the marketplace St Kilda competes in - as do all other Clubs

They will use the Rules to stay competitive for longer - but equally they will spend longer not being competitive once the Rules catch up with them

Pick 1, Pick 19 and Pick 37 do not result in a quick recovery from bottom to competitive

This is the competition the AFL Board table has delivered - no doubt with self Interest at its core (and the AFL having its preferred Clubs for the reasons they are the preferred “block buster”, attention Clubs (it is after all all about revenue and revenue follows publicity)

St Kilda are not a preferred Club

So there are the multiple challenges to St Kilda including its survival
