Richo becomes second longest serving St. Kilda coach next Sunday

Post: # 1800509Post samuraisaint »

On Sunday next week AR will coach his 124th match as St Kilda coach, eclipsing Grant Thomas (123) and he has already passed Ross Lyon (121) and Stan Alves (115).
He has also coached more games than other successful St Kilda coaches including Kenny Sheldon (89) and George Sparrow (coach of our Grand Final winning 1913 team which lost the challenge the week after against top of the ladder Fitzroy that same year).
A part of St Kilda history will be written next week.

Congratulations Richo but it’s really a sad state off affairs. It sums up our history

Maybe he and Newnes can end at 124 each.

Both will not make it to 124 if Richo is sacked and Newnes dropped, but sadly that would be picking on just 2.
So many others would not get their just reward.

I keep claiming this is the worst list in the competition but well coached.
Today we saw the worst list in the competition totally out coached.

Will be a trivia question.

Which coach, in any sport, was at the helm, for the longest period without making a final?

Definitely the worst list.

We need to get SOS to come to StKilda, bring his list broom with him and sweep out the dross.

How long would it take him to draft a skilled list of players.

Years i would think.

I’m about to vomit.
Might as well have had no coach over the last few years.
An under 9’s tacker would have more tactical nous.
To think think he has pocketed $500k a year for 5 years is fraudulent.

Richardson OUT
Finnis OUT (funny how he’s disappeared this year the grub)

I had a family function so I got to miss the game but maybe it was a blessing in disguise. Am I surprised with the result? Hardly! We are a very poorly led and coached club and have been for a while. Couple this with a list that has stagnated. The supporters are sick of this mediocrity and listening to Richardson give hollow, nothing answers in his press conferences because, in reality, he is ill-equipped to progress this club forward.
Stop bl##dy treading water and make some damn changes, starting with this inept coach and CEO! The fact that Richardson is on the verge of being our second longest serving coach typifies how much the professionalism of this club has gone backwards.

Nothing exemplifies st.kilda’s acceptance of mediocrity more than Richo’s continuing tenure as coach.
There seems to be no consequences for incompetence. The only high level performance is by the members for their loyalty and sacrifice.
Sack the recruiters.
Sack the coach.
Sack whoever recruited Paddy.
Sack whoever resigned the coach.

The Club should recognise this significant milestone.

Perhaps the cheer squad could prepare a giant run-through with his Win/Loss record displayed below the word "PLEASING".
And every player that he has coached could form a celebrity guard of honour for him.

I think he is a coach who has the ability to take a side from low to middle , but just cant take the next step .
Not the first like that and wont be the last, but the biggest mistake was the early , unnecessary , re-signing by the club, which tied their hands at the end of last season ( AFL influence) .

Bit like a racing team - last year we replaced the pit crew and mechanics but kept the driver. Worked ok for a while but the issue of the driver will always come back to roost.

It is a historically significant event.
Might even be a gee up for the team on Sunday if it is recognised formally.

Unfair call. Supporters have every right to post their informed opinions The Richo saga with his lack of player development and the rationale behind continuing to play certain individuals, has been a revolving wheel for several years now. The Weller saga last year was another fine example of his rudderless leadership.

So, don't attack supporters for expressing their opinion and frustration for observing the same mediocrity, woeful kicking at goal and general substandard on-field performances, week and after week for a few years now!

Yep. Two sides to the argument. Richo has been lucky for sure. But why hasn't anyone else lasted longer? Why were Sheldon, Alves and GT sacked after making the finals the year they were sacked or the year before. All could easily have coached longer.
Richo has probably been a beneficiary of some knee jerk reactions in the past.
(Funny that my autocorrect wanted to change Richo to Dicho. Even it doesn't want him lol).

FUN FACT: if we fail to kick 100 points at least once this season, it will be the first season since 1960 we have failed to kick a century at least once.
And back in those days there were only 18 games in the Home and Away season so this year may be the first season in the history of the 22 home and away game seasons we fail to top the ton.

Not unfair at all saintkid.
Firstly, denigrating and personal attacks are not opinions.
In your opening paragraph you used the term "informed" opinions. Don't get informed opinions confused with personal opinions. I would also think that there wouldn't be many or any on here that would really know about team selections and why A is chosen over B.
Believe me I get frustrated too at poor skills and decision making, but if it's week after week how are we winning almost half our games this year?
I am more than happy to read supporters unbiased and objective opinions but it does get tedious when so many become personal and sanctimonious.

We've won almost half those games because:-

Peter Wright refused to have a shot at goal with a minute to go that could've won GCS the game. That day, GCS were basically and u/21 team.
Essendon were off the bit and have stayed that way most of the year. They are awful. And have just as bad a coach (better list though)
We showed the comp why Melb are horrendous. Freo would've beaten them on their deck on Sat had they not had only 1 player on the bench from 3/4 time onwards.
We stumbled over Carlton at their lowest ebb
We beat the Dawks in a dogfight when they were 2 men down from 1/2 time onwards
We fell-in over a tiring GCS in Townsville.

Any time we play a better team than us - we get pumped. The bottom line is that our wins have come against similarly poor teams whose skills and decision making are as poor as ours or, those teams were better than us but either very injured or very out of format the time.

Case in point - based on last Sat, I don't think we'd get within 5 goals of Carlton if we played them this weekend. Same with North. Funnily enough ... both those teams have different voices at the helm now.

Well, despite kicking 7 straight yesterday in the first half we failed (once again) to even crack 14 goals and a possible century.
This record is looking safer by the week.
Maybe some of our forwards need to stop focusing on all of the dramatic goal celebrations and apply their focus on improving their conversion...
