Gears back for 2020

Great move by the club and I'm very glad to have Gears back for 2020.
Not sure who recruited him, but to get 200 games out of a rookie player is unbelievable.

Re: Gears back for 2020
Ok Ted I’ll bite.
Is this fantastic??
I dunno. I love Gears and his endeavour and commitment to life in general - it’s second to none as has been proven this season.
BUT....
That busted leg on top of a mismanaged comeback means he’s f***ed both his legs plus he’s 30.
His biggest asset was his run and carry. Will he have that still next season after all this??
I’m concerned. I’d prefer we sit and wait until as late as we can and make the decision in October not now.

Re: Gears back for 2020
Yeah dont know if this is a great idea.
If he was 26 sure. At 30 there's a chance of him not being able to run and carry and these injuries may also hurt his closing speed, which is his strength. Take that away and he's not skilled enough to be somthing else. Dont want to sound harsh, as I think he's been a warrior but we really needed to see how he was going to return before resigning him. Doubt a team like the Hawks would have done it.
Absolute foolish desicion by the club to play him. White would have been perfect or even Patton. You could tell he wasnt right and he should never have played in China. Should have given him a game in VFL, after the bye, and get him right to play back end of season. Now he's done.
Why does our club think playing player's with injuries (Bruce) or returning early from injury (Geary) is ok?
Menwhile players like White are languishing in the VFL and will probably move to another club for opportunities.
We'll be left with a broken 30 year old and watch White tear it up for another club.
We're giving the opposition a foot up before the ball is even bounced playing injured or underdone players. Its amateur hour stuff and this is, one of the many reasons, why the club finds itself in a poor position.

He's the Captain. Even though he's not highly skilled, the club should look after him. At least make him earn the games.

Why not just applaud the club for doing the right thing by Gears. I'm sure that he doesn't want any "special treatment" as far as selection goes, that's the kind of bloke he is. Wait and see what happens would be my preference.

We played Weller all last year, even though he was hampered. We could all see it.
Newnes was under a cloud last year, with an interrupted pre-season, and was never the same as he used to be.
Yet again we have the coaches playing an underdone Geary, thinking it would be like the first Maddie's Match
where Rooey wouldn't have played but he got up.
Geary ain't Rooey.
And some guys were suffering from a bug, which hampered their preparation.
What do coaches often say ? "We need to be better prepared..." Excuse me ??
You want to play in 30 degree heat, using guys that 2 days ago had been shitting through the eye of a needle?
Bring in the emergencies, that's why you paid to fly them in!!
at least they could deliver decent 2nd and 3rd efforts, and not be totally flat after one sprint!!
bloody hell indeed

I agree Ted. He has been a wonderful captain and has been sorely missed. What we don't see is the work he does as a captain during the week. By all reports he is superb. Loyalty is part of our motto. He deserves that.tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Sun 09 Jun 2019 11:13pm https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/sai ... 51v75.html

Yet for some reason, he's on the outer and never considered for seniors.
I'd rate Armo much higher than Geary in terms of on field value
but that's just my opinion

Would certainly like to see Armo, if he good enough, to at least be given another chance before he goes.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Mon 10 Jun 2019 7:34pmArmo apparently does a huge amount of work for the Zebs.twirlyhair wrote: ↑Mon 10 Jun 2019 7:14pmI agree Ted. Exactly Twirly but that sort of stuff isn't in a lot of people's DNA unfortunately.twirlyhair wrote: ↑Mon 10 Jun 2019 7:14pmI agree Ted. He has been a wonderful captain and has been sorely missed. True....illustrates exactly where the club's professionalism sits and why our club has done nothing but tread water the last few years under this coach. It was the perfect opportunity to play White who was primed after good performances at Sandy and of course, match fit.prwilkinson wrote: ↑Mon 10 Jun 2019 8:50pm What a farce it was to play him in Shanghai to begin with.

Oh well... instead of having an extra 2 weeks rest including the bye the get his thigh right, he now has the rest of the year to freshen up I suppose. Might have been his last game as Captain too.saintkid wrote: ↑Mon 10 Jun 2019 9:11pmTrue....illustrates exactly where the club's professionalism sits and why our club has done nothing but tread water the last few years under this coach. Re: Gears back for 2020
Nothing against Geary, but him being captain shows the list quality. He is the Steven Baker of the current team.
Tagger, limited skills, etc.
However......Baker would have been in player range 16-22, but player 16-22 were pretty good role players.
Now the fact he is captain shows the list is pretty damn ordinary with no up and coming leaders, or major talent (other than perhaps King) to be ultra excited about.
There in lies the problem. To be any good, players like Geary are the team fillers and role players, not the walk up top 5 starters.
The truth hurts.

Re: Gears back for 2020
I also think Geary is a role player - but the fact that he's been voted captain repeatedly must mean that he embodies qualities that his team mates perceive as being indicative of (sorry!) "Saints Footy". Which, unfortunately, must also mean that they don't perceive silky skills as being indicative of Saints Footy!
And that may be part of the problem.

Re: Gears back for 2020
Still think Gears will be skipper next year unless they want to try someone new.
He is captain courageous imo and leads from the front. Not every skipper needs to be A grade.

St Kilda are s*** and will always be s***.
Instead of being a ruthless club and making
decisions that will best place us to win a flag we
make decisions based on romance. I’m absolutely
over all of these f****** amateurs running our
club. There would be at least 4 youngsters at our
club that should be getting games ahead of Geary that
are languishing in the VFL this year as it is let
alone next year. If you want romance get him fit
and give him a farewell game in round 23 this year
