That's the season, right there.
This is a spirit breaker. What an awful, awful day....
Legitimately, why would you choose to play like this in the last quarter?

Re: Match Thread Saints v Magpies Round 9 2019
Newnes, Ross, Parker, Bruce, Billings, Marsh, McKenzie (at times), Acres (finally was put in the middle as a midfielder...too late), No second Ruck against a beast - again...The list could go on. Last quarter effort was pretty ordinary.
I liked Young's effort, Gresh in the middle got clearances, Dunstan was trying - still can't hit the side of a barn, Membrey at times, Wilkie looks so calm, RoMa for 3 qrts. Still some positives. Whoever is the Collingwood fwd coach should be poached, they have great structure and know how and when to lead.
Last quarter was as bad as we have played all year. Such a poor effort. Pies are clinical, but geez we just let them wander around.
Commentators said it, the amount of footy we get inside footy (for years it is the same) we just don't punish teams. It will continue to cost us unless something is done. Overall, we just lack quality in the middle. Without Steven, we don't have a gun mid (still). Even with Hannebery, we are still 2 quality rotations down in there and nothing coming through.
Just so disappointing.

Fantastic for 3 quarters. Terrible for 1. Weird.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

Re: Match Thread Saints v Magpies Round 9 2019
some senior players - well senior at any rate, were abysmal - Newnes should never play in the ones again, Ross - for those who remember Clint Jones, is never destined to be even B grade, and unless he can learn to turn both ways is easy to defend. We have too many one sided players - most of them left footers which again makes it easy to coach against. Brown caught out a few times by the pies defence trying to get back on his left.
Young did OK for his first game, time to see Hind as well.

It's just disappointing to see the same old setup when the game is slipping away. Token moves when we're 40pts down with 3 minutes to play is an absolute kick in the arse to the supporters.
Just mix it up a little. Get creative. What was there to lose??

Re: Match Thread Saints v Magpies Round 9 2019
Problem 1)
The reality is our midfield is one the worst in the AFL. We have no stars. Ross would probably be the fifth or sixth rotaion midfielder in most of the Top 4-6 teams. Gresh and Billings cant break games open. Steele is honest but again not a game breaker. Marshall is the best of the lot as far as talent.
Yes we have endeavour and courage but we cant sustain it for 4 quarters so eventually, like all the other games we lost this year, we get found wanting in the last. We are a shockingly poorly skilled side and we make it up for it by running around like madmen for 3 quarters which keeps us in it but as soon as we run out of steam, its all over.
Problem 2) Our goal kicking (or lack of) is just not acceptable. I dont buy this tired in games crap. It dosnt seem to effect other teams. In fact other teams seem to go up a level of accuracy, against us. They are paid, full time footballers. Its THE most fundemental part of the game and we are a mile off every other team in the comp. The entire list should be having 100 shots at goal a week. Even coming in on their days off until this is resolved.
They are paid enough to warrant pulling them out of their comfort zones and put in the time.
If this keeps happening past the bye then its time to move on Richo as its becoming systemic. Clocks ticking.

Agree. We don't have the depth of the better clubs and Collingwood ptrobably have more depth in that area than anyone. If we had Steven and Hannebury it would help but we'd still need a couple more.stkfc1 wrote: ↑Sat 18 May 2019 5:42pm Problem 1)

The goal kicking is ridiculous. And it's not the difficult shots that are hurting us. It's the ones you should get 9 times out of 10 that we seem to be 50-50 with. Especially when you put in all the effort up the ground. Must be deflating for the guys getting it down there.
Opinions are like arseholes, everybody's got one.

Re: Match Thread Saints v Magpies Round 9 2019
Anyone who watched the games knows that if we put scoreboard pressure on in the second quarter we would have won. We didn't quick straight and the deliver to inside 50 was woeful again. Until this is addressed we will struggle against most teams. On a plus we played well for 3/4 of the game and Young was ok, not great, but good for game #1

Re: Match Thread Saints v Magpies Round 9 2019
Last quarter was horrid.
They are a class above. Showed all game that when they got a breakaway.
Lack experience down back and class up front.
But our midfield just doesn’t hurt anyone. They are great at applying pressure, just pedestrian on attack.
Steele, Dunstan and Ross starting at the bounce is too defensive and too slow.
Gresh is learning the craft and I am sure will be a gun but we need more from the middle.
Coach has a lot to answer for.

A FEW THOUGHTS
Collingwood Attribute St Kilda
188.0cm Height 187.5cm
87.0kg Weight 86.4kg
26yr 8mth Age 24yr 2mth
120.6 Games 64.6
Overall quality and lack of experience is why we lost.
Overall one could not really fault the coaching today. Indeed we had the edge over the Pies for three quarters and it was just that the Pies were at times cleaner and that is why they
QUALITY
Sidebottom just took over in that last quarter and was excellent in his ball use. Billings had a hot third quarter but twice in this quarter passed the ball 30m across HF when not under huge pressure to hit up the defender rather than the team mate. Instances such as these is why we lost and Pies won on the day.
Overall we just lack some true guns who can turn the game our way at times and who just make the most of of opportunities.
EXPERIENCE
In games this does count and I have no doubt it was a factor today. It is why at times some of our players make poor or wrong decisions, or the hesitate just those vital few seconds which just then allows the opposition back in.
We saw both of this last week.
THE FUTURE
We can get better with the players that we have. Marshall Battle etc are going to get better.
BUT we need some true guns in the midfield. Hopefully Hannas can be one of them, though I am not sure he is known for ball use.
PS SAVAGE
Had a great 150th game today and has had a very good year.

Re: Match Thread Saints v Magpies Round 9 2019
I hope you are correct, but this year his ball use has been dreadful and in particular by foot. I think that he just tries to kick it too far too often and Roost could be his middle name this year.
It was good to see him handball twice today instead of just roosting it and we goaled both times.
