Why is Marsh playing in Forward Line

Post: # 1789328Post plugge12 »

Can anyone explain why Marsh was playing in the forward line. I would have thought he was desperately needed in the backline. The backline injuries, Webster (hand). Brown (dropped), Roberton, Geary, Carlisle.
What were the coaches thinking,

Another f*** up proudly brought to you by Ri(cho).

Marsh should have been moved onto Cameron 5 minutes in.

Richo keeps stuffing up. He needs to go.

Yep, Marsh has played in defense previously and Battle has played forward all his life.

But our master choach can do anything, don't cho know.

Also playing 8cres out of position (forward) or even on the wing is ridiculous. He needs to be that ruck rover beast we are crying out for.

But to be a ruck rover beast he needs to play like one. We all see that he 'could' be one. But he isn't one, is he? He just lollops around kicking the occasional beauty and giving false hope! Siposs anyone?

Hard to play like one when you’re not given any time in the middle (and no, playing as an undersized ruckman doesn’t count).

Acres takes the game on and is always looking for options to score - not options to pick up cheap possessions.

I remember a game last year that we lost (overall we were smashed as a team) but Seb performed well when he attacked the goals more and he played more forward of centre than he usually does.

I don't understand when we are getting pantsed (like we did in that first quarter) why Cho doesn't try Ross in the forward line at centre bounces and play Acres in the middle. What's the worse that can happen?

I think we seriously need to get the midfield right and everything else will have a positive follow on effect. I thought it was great for J Marsh and his team mates when he scored his first goal at AFL level.

Cause he isn't playing midfield or in defence.

The big problem was Cameron.
He was too mobile, too accurate and delivery to him was pin point or to advantage.

It would not have mattered who played on Cameron they were going to get smashed.
Putting Marsh in defence would not have helped.
GWS isolated Cameron and Joyce.
You can do this when the whole forward line is a threat and opponents have to guard their own man.
Joyce was brought in to the team because he has more mobility than Brown.
Sadly for Joyce he was simply outclassed.
He finished a slaughter lamb.

I remember the days of Plugger opposition coaches would move their defender after about 5 goals.
Plugger loved it.
It sent him the message that even the opposition coach was admitting that Plugger had slaughtered his opponent.
Plugger always prided himself on beating his opponent and aimed for 8 goals in a game.
Moving the opponent only boosted Plugger's confidence and ambition.
The next opponent surely got slaughtered too.

Sides have worked out Membrey is our main forward. Keep him quiet, we are gone. Marsh was an attempt to take the pressure off. Will take a few games to assess if its a good move or not. We desperately need to score, defence is reasonable. Forwards are inept. MIds problematic. DMac to go on the ball or forward is my election pledge - vote early, before 18 May, as our season is going down in the polls.

Why bother to vote.
If you live south of South Road, and east of the Frankston railway, like Moorabbin or Mordialloc you are going to be represented by a legal snob who is too up himself to live anywhere near you.
He is a resident of Malvern !!!!!

I assume the problem with trying guys out of position half way through a game is that they're just not that versatile - if they've trained with the mids all week, they're not going to know what the forwards are doing (c.f. Gresh this week). Remember the mess Rooey got into when he first went on the wing (in fact, he stayed in the same mess all the time he was on the wing truth be told).

To me it is real simple, Marsh is not a forward. He is a defender.
When you play him outside his competency you take a big chance.
He will be a really good defender if given the chance and support.

You only need to look at his bio (albeit brief) and you wouldn't be asking this question...

"Marsh threw himself into draft contention after a great AFL Under-18 Championships with Western Australia. His performance against the Northern Territory, where he gathered 22 possessions and kicked four goals, raised eyebrows from talent scouts around the country."

and;

"The last man added to Collingwood’s senior list ahead of the 2014 season took giant strides in his first year at the elite level. The Sandgroper featured in two NAB Challenge games, winning a total of seven disposals while playing mainly as a high half forward. He fulfilled a similar role in the opening rounds of the VFL season before being switched into defence midway through the year."
