Still have vivid memories of Rod Galt.....really good lion hearted player who always gave his all......RIP fella

He played mostly as a ruckman back then in the 70's, i'm surprised he was only 194 cm tall (6'4").

194 cm is often considered short for a Key position player nowadays, we even have 194cm midfielders.

I have a strange memory of him in a losing final at the MCG in 72 or 73 (Carl or Rich) where the runner came out to him a couple of times in the last quarter to drag him (no interchange then) and he pushed the runner away before eventually walking off slowly!

The very first game I went too was at Moorabbin I was about 8 years old standing on beer cans in the animal enclosure so I could get a look at the footy. We were playing Carlton Greg Kennedy was playing on Cowboy every time he took a mark (which was pretty often ) Cowboy would give him a bit of a touch up just to let him know he was sill there . Down the other end Vin Waite was doing similar thing to John Stevens & Rod Gault was staring for us at the time & became my cult hero. If my memory is right I think Kennedy kicked 8 Carlton won easily but I think Gault kicked 4 for us but he took a few pack marks that still to this day live in my head . It was a pitty to see him go Carlton I think at that stage we were in melt down & the rest is history. But thank you Rod Gault RIP mate you have made a young kid a life long Saints fan.

From memory Rodney was sometimes known as "Spook" or "Spookie". He would take solid high marks and was a capable ruckman especially in the forward line. He was quite useful around the goals. While naturally lacking the raw talent and vigour of Carl D or the tap ruck skills of Brian M, he was nevertheless a handy Sainter in his day.

I remember him coming on very late in the 71 Grand Final. Must have been 19th or 20th man. Had a couple of shots at goal, from memory, but the damage was done. RIP

I was at the second semi final in 1971 when he ran into an open goal at the western Stand end and missed. Crucial miss at the time, he was a good overhead mark in that era where he both rucked and went forward.

We were well beaten for three quarters but came back like a train in the last, but kicked 5 goals 9 behinds (sound familiar?) to go down by 2 points. We were all over them, they had stopped completely with their lack of finals footy showing. But, we got another chance by beating Richmond. Not having the week off told in the last quarter of the grand final. We were the second best team of 1971. The best team was called Hudson.

One of my earliest football memories was seeing a clip on World of Sport with the big No.17 tackled from behind on the left forward flank heading towards goal. In my memory he was almost laying horizontally in the air as his boot made contact and he kicked the goal of the day. Was devastated when he went to Carlton.

As far as I know the club haven’t even acknowledged his passing. The only thing I’ve seen has come from Carlton.
