Re: Unwarranted free against Billings
That & the 50m penalty against Sinclair I think it was for a supposed throw & the play on after but if you look close in the slo mo it looks like he does get a touch on it , but then the cruel 50 resulting in a goal.

The media haven’t mentioned Billings incorrect call have they? Guess it doesn’t suit the agenda.

Umpire sees only what they want. His mindset was to penalise StKilda rather than apply the rules.Linton Lodger wrote: ↑Mon 08 Apr 2019 10:33pm In fact Billings should have got the free kick (in the back).

He should have taken the mark. Looks like he wimped it a bit.

The rub of the green was against us.
Also another change in umpire interpretations -last few weeks they were hot on that stupid "deliberate" rule.
This week they just let them go!

Re: Unwarranted free against Billings
It has been mentioned in the media a little bit - just not as much as the Collingwood - West Coast one.
In fact the AFL have now admitted that it was an incorrect call, but the Phillips one was correct.

Re: Unwarranted free against Billings
I think the whole below the knees thing has grown beyond what it was supposed to be. It was formulated to stop people sliding in with knees or studs and taking out players ala Adam Goodes. Billings was only ever after the ball and the Freo guy has come over the top - the Freo player was more in control of what happened to his legs than Billings. And I also agree that the 50 was ridiculous given that it was a 50/50 call and most people would have expected the free to go to Billings for ITB.
Umpire discretion should be able to be used - there are clear attempts to return the ball to an assumed player, and there are obvious time wasting ones.
I still cannot get the 50 out of my mind, where the umpire was calling the St Kilda player back on the mark, but using the wrong name, and as he did not respond, whacked him with a fifty.
There should only be one rule in Football - you cannot impede other players rights to get the ball. If you touch the shoulder but don't impede, play on, if you tug a jumper, but don't impede, play on, if you dispose of the ball legally in a tackle (you are not impeding the players right to have a fair attempt at the ball) play on.
The umpires get caught up in the rules too much, it should be the vibe of the thing - everyone knows when an action is legal, and when it is not - just call it - don't name it - just call a free kick.
And by that ruling - Billings in no way impeded the Freo bloke - but was in fact impeded in his attempts to crawl forward to the ball.

I think you’re combining two incidents. The 50 was paid after the throw against Sinclair.

I was sure that it was for Sinclair throwing the ball to Billings after assuming it was his free kick - will have to check.kosifantutti wrote: ↑Tue 09 Apr 2019 8:22am I think you’re combining two incidents. The 50 was paid after the throw against Sinclair.
And on the Umpires - WTF does Leigh Fisher get a gig in games involving the Saints - I actually think he is harsh on us to avoid any hint of bias - but wouldn't it be easier for him to just umpire a different game?

Re: Unwarranted free against Billings
Hopefully his coach would have already had a quiet word to him one on one and told him in no uncertain terms that if he drops another basic chest mark again he'll be back playing with the Zebs.Jacks Back wrote: ↑Mon 08 Apr 2019 11:00pm He should have taken the mark. Looks like he wimped it a bit.
As you say, if he keeps his eyes on the ball then he takes the mark, the second effort is not required, the free wouldn't have been paid and this thread would be unwarranted

Re: Unwarranted free against Billings
Just looked at that again. McKenzie has the ball when the umpire blows the whistle and calls “throw”. Both teams had had their hands on the ball in the previous few seconds. I reckon DMac is hoping it’s our free and Newnes is way in the clear. As he handballs to Newnes the umpire calls “Freo” and points his arm to suggest Freo kick, but the ball is already on it’s way to Newnes.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Tue 09 Apr 2019 8:25amI was sure that it was for Sinclair throwing the ball to Billings after assuming it was his free kick - will have to check.kosifantutti wrote: ↑Tue 09 Apr 2019 8:22am I think you’re combining two incidents. I reckon the free was there but not the 50.
Just more confusion caused by the way the advantage rule is applied.

Re: Unwarranted free against Billings
The decision against Billings was a howler
Is there any comment on the “spoil” of Newnes when Steele centred a ball late in the game?
Not only was Newnes crunched from behind but there were two hands in his back from where we were sitting
Play on was the call

Re: Unwarranted free against Billings
We seriously need to find out what the Doggies do.
If we were to continuously get 100% more frees than the opposition, we'd be a finals threat!!

& Curly bemoaning umpires
He’s committed & consistent.
I wondered what he did in the off-season?
Do you think he’s on a cricket forum bitching about LBW or Hawkeye?
Imagine if we actually found out Curly was once an AFL umpire?

Are the umps ever good? Not very often but unfortunately...you need the little jockies to run a game of footy at any level.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

Re: Unwarranted free against Billings
Glad they admitted to getting that call wrong. From memory, it resulted in a goal to the Fockers. A shame Billings dropped the mark, though.
Apart from that blown call, I thought the umpiring was a lot better than the garbage they served up in our first two rounds. Round 1 was a particularly dismal display from the fluorescent ferrets.

We’d have at least 6 flags if it wasn't for those flaming maggots.

AFL admits it was a mistake but won't take 6 points off Freo's score which would give us the win.
