We talk about Winmar as being one the greatest indigenous/aboriginal players to have played the game

No one bats an eyelid then when we categorize him as being Indigenous or Aboriginal

I agree there is a fine line at times between a racist comment and a stupid comment, but a lot of indigenous folk have been the subject of discrimination and negaitivity for decades, so when you combine a negative comment and highlight that a person is of aboriginal heritage, it will most probably be offensive to an aboriginal person

If you say the 'Italians' cost us the match, you are being somewhat prejudiced and discriminatory against Matera and against people with Italian heritage

If you continuously highlight that Sicily is a ranga and you make general statements that all rangas are volatile and angry, than that is being prejudiced and discriminatory against rangas

When you stare at a person with indigenous heritage that person perceives that you could be prejudiced and you are making them feel uncomfortable. When you highlight the fact that a player is of a certain heritage and that's the only thing that you are pointing out, rather than concentrating any other attribute of that player then there is a high chance that that person will be offended. You have to understand that because indigenous folk have endured a fair amount of prejudice and discrimination in their lives, then it is a sensitive issue and there are laws in Australia to protect people from racist attitudes.
