But Steele isn't that far off. And given his first half of last year was only Ok, and that he's played over a full season less than Cripps, and Bont has played twice as many games as him - to finish with the above numbers suggests that his trajectory is fair dinkum.

If he can become a 30 disposal with 15 being contested per game player then he’s the inside bull we are crying out for. Would likely elevate the team close to finals off the back of that output as well. A lot of the clubs fortunes are depending on Jack.

Wasn't there an interview or maybe it was his B&F speech where he said he was begging to be played in the middle and that they finally listened to him and gave him a shot and he never looked back. From memory he wasn't picked for round 1 last year?

The new rules are going to really work in both our mid Jacks (Steele and Steve) down to the ground. Steele has just played over 50 games. This is when players start hitting their stride and his numbers are already very good. We may well have ended up with best player in that draft after all.

A grade potential Jack Steele. Very good trade and pickup for a 2nd rounder.

I think Steele is symptomatic of Rich's Coaching, which has been an over-emphasis on the defensive or negative aspects of the game. Steele's game suffered under it, and since becoming a regular mid he is blooming more and more.

There has always been a place for strong defence, and negative football, but NOW is not the time to overboard on it. There was a window in the Lyon era when it almost won us a flag or two. But the game has moved on with tactics developed to counter it and you need to be more offensive now.

The 6/6/6 rule change has only made this even more so.

A dominant midfield is now more valuable as centre break clearances will present more scoring opportunities.

Our midfield lacks true stars, and it is vital, that some of our players can bloom into this role, and Steele is currently presenting as the most likely to be our next new star mid.

I think that Billings is continuing to build and bloom, but Billings is on outside player. Steele is that inside clearance beast we need.

I know the club has hope for Gresham, but after looking at those two JLT games I am not sure he is ready to be a full-time mid. sure develop his game and rotate him through there. Don't think we'll ever have another Lenny (my all time fave) but gee I see a lot of his qualities in Jack Steele.

Similar background too, Lenny from Sydney but spent development time in Canberra with NSW-ACT Rams, Steeley a Canberra boy who spent development time in Sydney with Giants academy.

Hope he's in for a huge year!
