Umpiring - ask the question Richo
Is it what we are doing wrong? Or what?
In a game where we are currently in front, how can it be that we are on the wrong side of a 26-7 free kick count?
Because if it is something we are doing wrong, we've got two weeks to start getting it right!

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
It’s just biased umpiring simple as that. The only reason the Dogs are in this game is because of blatant cheating.

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
Good post samuraisaint, our technique is clearly flawed, i started watching in the second half and did not see one free kick paid to the dogs that wasn’t there in the third.
It’s a hard thing for a biased supporter to accept, but no where does it say frees must be even.

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
When you win a game that like, when you have been in front nearly all day, you can only lose a free kick count by that margin if you are breaking the rules of the game due to the way you are playing - comes down to the way we are executing tackles, falling in to players backs, grabbing them too high, your arms slipping low in a tackle, etc.
Gotta get technique right for the real thing.

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
I'd love to blame the ump for dumb, undisciplined sloppy football..but just can't bring myself to do it...some can..I can't.
I can blame Richo though.

In a game we controlled most of time to have that many frees against us a joke.

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
The umps wouldn’t pay them if we didn’t give them away. I even saw a few more obvious ones they didn’t pay to them, so 39 is probably lucky!

Only time you ever see a side concede 40 frees us when umpires come with a mindset to crack down on them. Umpires missed so many frees for us.

40 frees to 14 and that is official. WTF!!!!!!!
It was the ones not paid to us that hurt.,
The poor Irish guy got monsterd for no result. He could have been killed for all the maggots cared.

Given your eagle eyes and your clearly fair minded approach to viewing a game did you happen to notice any unpaid frees to us during the match ?

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
I saw at least 3 paid against Skunk, that I shook my head n went
'FFS, that's not a free!'
Too often umps blew whistle for no valid reason.

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
Yep, some missed for us, and some missed for the dogs, and some missed for every team playing this round.
At one point a dogs player got fair and square in the back and ridden into the ground inside his forward 50 and kicked a goal from the free, and some on here whinged. I am happy I can watch the game with more objectivity than that.

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
If its our technique and sloppiness , then why last week didnt we have a similar amount of frees paid against us. 40 frees against one team is just not normal. I dont know the reason, I dont think they are cheating, but really some explanation is required

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
Looking at the game dispassionately as it was only a practice match I would say we were very sloppy in our tackling and most of the frees paid to the dullards were there. What pisses me off were the 10 to 15 obvious frees not paid to the saints

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
Sure you could pay a 100 frees a match. The rules are so subjective that the same incident could probably be paid either way 80% of the time. As a few have mentioned it’s not the ones paid, it’s the ones that could have been paid to the saints that is the issue. Come on that difference is so one sided it should be questioned.
Having had my whinge, we still won, what does that say? I guess it’s a practice match and umps need to practice.

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
When there's a pattern it is not a co-incidence. The Doggies are looked after because they kiss arse better than most teams. Beveridge would have learnt how to do it from his days with Clarkson. Ratten would have seen first hand the brownnosing and shrewdness of the Hawthorn FC and how they get the umps on side. Hopefully we address our discipline and our sloppinness but also make sure that we follow the lead of the best sucks in the league

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
The dogs have become the new Collingwood in the eyes of the umpires which means every real or doubtfull free will be paid to them while they are given plenty of latitude. We were probably more careless today but if our opponent was North the free kick differential would have been a lot closer.

They won a flag 3 years ago off the back of umpiring.

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
Excellent, excellent point.
The umpires do a very good job. The game is adjudicated ridiculously, and the individuals blowing the whistle do a very good job considering.
But...
The umpires today could have done an equally good a job, and the free kick count could have been equal.
It is very rare that any decision is black or white. If you look hard enough at each contest, you could mount a case for a free to us, a free to the Dogs or play on.

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
The free kick count means nothing. If the dogs deserved 40 frees they should get 40 frees. But they seemed to get a lot of the 50-50s today.
The umpires were having a bad day not just in terms of frees.
One bloke couldn’t work out which way to point, so maybe he decided to simplify things by only giving frees to the Dogs.
There were two marks to Billings and Membrey within about a minute of each other where the umpire was so slow to blow the whistle that they had to play on under pressure.
And then there was that boundary throw in where nobody from the dogs nominated and the umpire said “nobody from the Bulldogs contesting” and then one of them contested and there was no free.

Re: Umpiring - ask the question Richo
There were a lot of in-the-backs when we tackled them with some head highs and some tackles slipping down. I don't follow the NRL and maybe Slater has been teaching them techniques which are fine for rugby but no good for the AFL.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
