" 26. PADDY MCCARTIN FLOURISHING
Finally has himself at AFL standard fitness after a big off-season and a career-high 13 games last year. Few of us would know how hard it has been to juggle diabetes with repeated concussions."

Re: Paddy fit at last
Good article. Can't wait for big Paddy to hit his straps. He is still a kid but will soon be entering that crucial age bracket when he needa to start performing on a consistent basis.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

This bloke is an inspriation. To be playing sport at the elite level with T1D is a real credit to Paddy and his character. He will kick 40+ goals this year.

Re: Paddy fit at last
Which again begs the question why we would use a number 1 pick on a guy facing such significant health obstacles.
A 40+ goal season would be sensational, playing 20+ games would be a great start, I think he could really benefit from some continuity and a bag or two.

Re: Paddy fit at last
we’d need a 60 goal season
to seriously consider his effort as sensational
wouldn’t we ?

Re: Paddy fit at last
He does give off the impression that if it all clicks for him... he could go to very good very quickly.
We saw in previous seasons that he was an excellent mark and kick with suspect durability
He got on the field more last season only for those two strengths to fall away considerably
I feel like with decent delivery, and a bag he could get the confidence play like the gun we know he could be. He clearly has the attributes.
My concern remains whether he has the durability

Re: Paddy fit at last
He just needs some luck to help him stay out on the field and yeah, he does look like the type that could become very good very quickly. Another player I'm worried could make Richo look like a genius.
Bring on round 6.

It may be the rumour that if we are either 0/6 or 1/5 Richo will be axed. This will changes coaches and may help Paddy if he is still underperforming. Read a damning report on his stats and performance last year so no mor excuses this year.
In his defence he has list the puppy fat and is training really hard so at least he is serious

Re: Paddy fit at last
Couldn’t care less if he kicks 40 goals.
Has anyone been watching how the game has evolved over the last few seasons.
Paddy is a dinosaur. No disrespect meant but it is the truth.

You have to admire Paddy's dedication and work ethic. He really wants to be a gun footballer. I think he can still get there.DJ Higgins wrote: ↑Mon 28 Jan 2019 8:35pm It may be the rumour that if we are either 0/6 or 1/5 Richo will be axed. If the Saints have a 4 win season again then Richo probably won't be the coach. Probably guaranteed.
If we are 0-6 (which won't happen) then Richo is probably gone also. If we are 3-3 or 4-2 at Rd 6 I will be happy...and Richo will remain.

Re: Paddy fit at last
I find it quite alarming (on both the player and club side) that it’s taken, what, four seasons and five pre seasons to get a player (that we gave a lot for) to ‘AFL standard fitness’?!?
Is this not an elite sportsman in a highly professional sports league?!?
Another in a long list of black eyes for the AR reign...

Why can't it happen?tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Mon 28 Jan 2019 10:47pm
If we are 0-6 (which won't happen) then Richo is probably gone also.
RL and Freo went from a minor premiership year (18 wins) in 2015, and followed that up with a 0-10 start in 2016.
In a tight competition, it doesn't take much for a year to unravel. We will be finding our feet early in 2019 with the new recruits, seeing which of them fit in, and which will make it, etc.. (most were playing at the VFL level or equivalent - so it'll be big step up for them).
Our gun draft pick won't be contributing early on (or if at all during 2019) - and we haven't recruited or drafted in any healthy A grade talent that's at the top of their game, and ready to hit the ground running.
Carlisle missing (or if he's not right) will be a big blow.
The knives will probably be out regardless, if we have a "bad start".

Re: Paddy fit at last
I think the point to add to this is that Richo isn’t exactly on a clean slate... his contract is coming up and the onus is on him to categorically prove he’s the man to lead us further...samoht wrote: ↑Tue 29 Jan 2019 11:18amWhy can't it happen?tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Mon 28 Jan 2019 10:47pm

Mild improvement from 14th to 12th shouldn’t cut it IMO. That’s for new coaches, coaches rebuilding or coming in to arrest slides.
The absolute lowest bench mark he could achieve and survive, again in my optinion, is just missing finals with a bad injury run or something to that effect...
his best season was 2017...no reason why after 6 years we shouldn’t finish the year 100% confident that 2020 = finals
12th finish with a 1 year contract, no closer to fixing the ruck/outside mid issue, with too many forwards and a game plan that works some of the time would be a disaster

No chance at all, then.
Let's agree on one thing - there's more chance of us starting 0-6 (after the year we had) than Freo going from minor premier in 2015 to a 0-10 start in 2016 (that's a further 4 losses in a row!)- who would have predicted that? Even the pundits were tipping Freo would go one better and win the GF in 2016.

Just remember being told that the Diabetes was a non issue when we drafted him.....all under control, and any nay sayers were told where to go.dragit wrote: ↑Mon 28 Jan 2019 4:18pmWhich again begs the question why we would use a number 1 pick on a guy facing such significant health obstacles.

Goos luck Paddy, I do admire his efforts to make it. Just don'tthink he will get anywhere near the level we hoped.
He has some way to go to have an "ordinary" career...let alone significant.
