My sister lived in Maryborough n Hervey Bay for 20 years (mainly Maryborough, she lived in HB for about 4 yrs)
She was in the bay at early 80's when it was a very quiet place, and not many houses- it was funny that the folding map from a servo showed a thin strip of houses- from The Esplanade, there were 3 streets running parallel to The Esplanade and then after that, just undeveloped land.
I went there every Christmas for a few years.

The folk there used to call kids' backpacks/schoolbags 'ports' short for 'portmanteau' :D
My grandparents had friends from SA who would visit and bring two Ports (suitcases) with them.

(Wikipedia: In then-contemporary English, a portmanteau was a suitcase that opened into two equal sections. The etymology of the word is the French porte-manteau, from porter, "to carry", and manteau, "cloak" (from Old French mantel, from Latin mantellum). In modern French, a porte-manteau is a clothes valet, a coat-tree or similar article of furniture for hanging up jackets, hats, umbrellas and the like.)
Interesting. While doing a BA in Education as an adult in Qld, a similar conversation sparked in a language and learning lecture. The lecturer suggested that the term derived from the Italian word 'portare' - to bring or to carry, and was popularised by large migrations of Europeans coming to Queensland from around the turn of the last century until the 1950's. Their children populated our schools and brought their 'ports' with them, packed with humble yet exotic lunches. Coincidentally, the Mary River in Maryborough was the main entry point for these migrants and delivered more migrants than any other port in the country during this time.

This tread proves we should be sponsored by the 50 up club and 3AW.

Women want equality, but look at this site.
It appears we aren't really similar, after all.
A forum on dieting and make-up/hair care would see 100% women.
