No idea if this is true or not, but this is what I have heard.
Look, I'd be lying if I hadn't heard it from multiple sources.

We all want to work in comfortable environments and that's certainly what's been allowed to grow at St Kilda. In fact, I'd say it's been encouraged by the board and executive.

However, the problem with that is when you exist in a performance-driven industry. If you're giving 80%-90% of your best, you'll get pretty much that return.

That's a problem in the ultra-competitive AFL world, where 99% effort is enough to get you well beaten.

I've been lucky to have been exposed to high performance sporting environments all over the world and I can't believe how our club has diverted towards this model.

Well, I can believe it - it fits with Finnis, Richardson and the AV Jennings ex-pres, who wanted a non-confrontational model of performance (hint - not my words).

I do understand the utility of this model but it's not appropriate for a club that actually needs to create a self-fulfilling culture of performance and, more importantly, an expectation of performance.

Splitting the jargon: when you walk inside the club, you know the next every training session is the most important one of your life.

We have an absence of that. Watched training a lot this past year and was flabbergasted by the half-baked efforts and lack of accountability [especially after an error, like a stray kick or handpass]. That mentality really played out on game day. I was surprised that it wasn't noticed more broadly.
I have plans to attend (at least) the first 4 home games next year. If what you are saying results in similar starts to the past three years, then I dunno if I could do much after that.

I try my best though to be very much 'glass half full' at the start of any season, and therefore believe (hope) that this one is getting some momentum. If not, and it continues as per recent form, then a much larger cleanout will / should occur

4 - 8 wins

Really, all the pre-season hype is:-

1. Ratten
2. Hanneberry
3. Weller isn’t there so can’t be picked
4. Well, if Richmond can do it, so can the saints
5. Beign draw means that saints can push for 8-10 wins.

So, Richmond was a good team with Dusty, Cotchin and Riewoldt in it. They had multiple finals and then had 1 bad year. They got some good players in for the top picks they got, recruited a Rioli and also got the bottom 6 draw to ease things in for 2017.

Saints are getting the same mercy draw like Richmond, so Saints can get to 8-11 wins (according to a lot of posters). Just speaks volumes to how much the list is stuffed and how ordinary the coach is.

I know 1 thing - you could always buy a ticket to see Riewoldt, but despite Hanneberry, there isn’t a Saints player worth buying a ticket for.
Speak for yourself mate seems like you have a simplistic (and somewhat miserable) view of life and football. Yeah our expectations to improve are all based on Mav being delisted and the draw, nothing at all to do with (and just picking a few random things out of the ether) our new world-class facilities, the roguish off-field appointments such as Billy Slater and Darren O’Shaughnessy, new influx of coaching IP, the addition of actual pace to our list via older recruits, the potential of King and Bytel and increased output expected by Hunter and Coff, the return of Dylan and Bruce to our line-up after missing full seasons... nah you’re right, it’s all some random bulls*** you made up about Richmond we should all be miserable all summer because nothing good has happened... and if you think guys like Gresh aren’t “worth buying a ticket for” then I’m calling you out as not actually a St Kilda fan...

Natural improvement from Gresham, Clark, and Coffield.

Josh Bruce returns up forward and if Josh Battle stands up at the back we will be better off.

Put into the mix some of Hanneberry's competitiveness that hopefully rubs off on Sinclair and Billings we are better around the middle of the ground.

If we get more goals from Lonie, and another 15 to 20 from Newnes again I am optimistic. And as for Paddy, I am looking into my half full glass. Personally I can't wait for the season to begin and we let our football do the talking.

HS is better than The Age which is nothing more than a mouthpiece for Western communism and the Greens. The sports and AFL section is good though.

Both newspapers are rubbish.

The Age is worse because it positions itself as "independent always". It's clearly not an independent newspaper.

So much strawman, playing the man, taking the high moral ground, etc. - this whole thing is a piece of beauty.

Last time I checked, I had clearly leaned towards 8-10 wins which is more than the miserly 4.5 wins this year. The reasons I listed were logical. Richmond changed heaps of assistant coaches, got some FAs and it moved them forward. Saints may get to 8-10 wins but the following year in 2020 Saints will need to chase FAs and trade targets to rise up. Again, the record for this coach isn’t great.

But yeah, taking pot shots at fellow posters is always fun, right.

My point is that evertonfc’s comment on training intensity is alarming and doesn’t bode well given everything else.

I think we can return to a 50% w/l ratio in 2019 if we have some luck with injuries ... but a lot will depend on our top couple of midfielders remaining healthy.
We don't have depth and we don't have elite users of the ball in our midfield - and our recruiting is not (and hasn't been) addressing this area.

What do we expect - a coach that can wave his magic wand (no innuendo intended)?? No such coach exists - but good recruiters do (at other clubs).

The other thing is ...
Max King is obviously a longer term prospect, and some of the mature players we have recruited may or may not make it - but other teams have drafted and recruited players that will have an immediate impact.

(Our recruiting is the area that's holding us back - we need to nail our recruiting/drafting from now on. There's a lot of catching up to do vs the teams that are nailing theirs.I mean we could've got our no.1 pick right, at least. We don't have the luxury to make these mistakes.

No way can we win 11 matches in 2019 Samoht. However, there is a lot of truth in what you are saying about us needing a lot of luck with injuries, and you are spot on that King is a longer-term prospect, as is Battle. I also 100% agree with you on that our mature age recruits will turn out to be a mixed bag, with some making it and some not.
We might win 8 or 9 games or around that figure, but guys like Phillips, Rice, Austin, Coffield, Clark, Battle, and Pierce must be played at the expense of the experienced guys who are not going to take us to the next level, and this will surely equate to fewer wins. If they don't develop these guys we are going to be very mediocre for a decade. And we've been mediocre for going on six or seven seasons already.
