Meh, I'm not giving an inch to troublemakers and their puerile BS on this forum, and the mods should see it exactly the same way. I believe we have a shortage of moderators, I'm happy to put my hand up, which given my record of level headed interaction on this forum I wouldn't expect too much resistance, and make the problem go away quick smart.

And in the exact same way, it escalated once the AFL stepped in and tried to stop it.outside66 wrote: ↑Tue 27 Nov 2018 11:58am It's clearly the off season with this sort of rubbish... FWIW, I'll indulge.
Firstly; 'the cho/cho is just a straight up stale nickname.
Secondly; some people have found it to be offensive and it actually is a known term that millenials get around - I asked an 18 y.o fellah yesterday whether he knew what it meant and he had a giggle then confirmed what is up on UD.
Thirdly; I liken this situation (whilst in no-way as heavy) similar to that of the Adam Goodes booing in that, a minority would be booing because of truly vindictive agendas whilst the majority did it for the 'fun' of it or just because everyone else was doing it. When Goodes came out and said that he found it offensive, then that should've been enough for normal people to cut it out, leaving only the twits behind to carry-on with it.
In summary; just because you don't find it offensive and don't mean to be derogatory in any way, then it should be easy enough to move on and use a colloquially accepted nickname.
However we're no talking racism here.

It seems some of the people who are apparently against the use of the word cho or its variations, have just broken Simon's new ruling multiple times. I reckon the juveniles are having a lend of you and it's time to stop responding.

Criticism is fine, as I said. You're mixing ridicule and abuse with criticism - they are 2 different things.desertsaint wrote: ↑Tue 27 Nov 2018 11:34am so is the issue "the cho" or the abuse? posters can use "the cho" if they write a supportive post?
perhaps you mistakenly think by eradicating the word you'll eradicate the abuse?
i've noticed every single abusive post seems to be by a saints supporter. if we ban them perhaps the abuse will stop.
perhaps just ban discussion about the coach full stop - every thread on him contains a fair bit of negativity. i'd hate to think people on the interweeb thingy will see those posts as permission to go carte blanche on criticising our coach.
you know the first thing repressive dictators and governments do is ban all forms of criticism. all discussion must be positive. they live a lie and try to enforce that upon the people. such a mindset is a dangerous thing.
as is a mindset whereby we actively pursue what we think is the 'best' world for our citizens, our family, our forum, and pursue this by curtailing individual freedoms that don't fit into this 'best' world view.
Voltaire: “The best is the enemy of the good.”
but others great minds thought similarly:
Confucius: "Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without."
Shakespeare: “Striving to better, oft we mar what's well.”
"Cho" and "the Cho" is always followed by some negative comment that doesn't seek discussion. So I attach a negative association to it.
Let's take another negative word, "punk" .. if someone addresses you by "hey, punk", instead of using a friendly and courteous form of address, how
would you view it ... would you find it acceptable? what if they repeatedly refer to you as "punk" or "the punk" followed by a negative comment?

Re: The Cho: vote now
firstly no one is referring to richo directly. so if some people discussed me on some fan forum as 'the punk' i really wouldn't give a rats bum. secondly australians are famous for using derogatory nicknames. it's cultural and by itself not disrespectful at all.samoht wrote: ↑Tue 27 Nov 2018 2:04pmCriticism is fine, as I said. thirdly, you are again mistakenly referring to 'the cho' as derogatory in meaning, but earlier admitted it wasn't.
if negative comments about the coaching staff worry you why even read a fan forum?

I find the use of the word 'White" highly offensive, as it implies 'white supremacist' and the word itself denies the existence of other colours.kosifantutti wrote: ↑Tue 27 Nov 2018 2:28pm If anyone wants to support the Saints rather than get involved in petty squabbles over semantics, feel free to get involved in our Sponsorship of Brandon White.

So 'white' is racist and has no place on this forum.
In fact, 'white' is listed in the UD as having several sexual and vulgar connotations.
So there.

Who cares about semantics, I just want to win the argument ... in a respectful manner.

It is a commonly accepted convention of English grammar, that one does not finish a sentence with a preposition.kosifantutti wrote: ↑Tue 27 Nov 2018 3:15pmHow many shares can I put you down for?WellardSaint wrote: ↑Tue 27 Nov 2018 2:38pmI find the use of the word 'White" highly offensive, as it implies 'white supremacist' and the word itself denies the existence of other colours.kosifantutti wrote: ↑Tue 27 Nov 2018 2:28pm If anyone wants to support the Saints rather than get involved in petty squabbles over semantics, feel free to get involved in our Sponsorship of Brandon White.

Err dude, if Cho actually means what you and two others believe it means - this is far from civil.

Re: The Cho: vote now
Well, I'm branding him with the endearing 'cho for our 2019 season, maybe with t-shirt and coffee mug merch in support. I think it gives him an air of cult status...what with a 33% strike rate and no-one but 2 complete losers on an obscure fan forum in his corner, the poor guy could use all the positive PR he can get! Our coaching department seemed to have had an ad hock feel about it in retrospect, but with some pretty nifty off-field appointments for 2019 I can't help but feel more positive about our coaching structure. I just hope it doesn't take them long to gel, given the numerous changes. I'm at least willing to give 'cho a go...but if we're looking shakey mid season it probably wouldn't take much to push me from pro-'cho to the no-'cho camp.

We start referring to the Coach as the Choach or the Coacho?

The phrase is stuck in my head now. I was reimagining the Beatles Sgt Pepper song:
