Re: PICK 41 - JACK BYTEL - ST KILDA
Talk of Cards is appropriate...and the Saints have decided to gamble their hand this year with a "value play" by playing their first two draft picks for two players that slid due to injuries.
I understand the logic, but "sliders" have not been our best feature of our previous drafts.

Does anyone know if he is fit to start pre-season on Monday or still injured?

He has a bulging disc! How do you know he will be fine? Highlights look excellent but that injury is really worrying.tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote:Great pickup at 41. Should have gone alot higher, but didn't due to injuries. He will be fine.

Re: PICK 41 - JACK BYTEL - ST KILDA
Maybe our medical staff went over him and talked to him like they would have for all our draftees. Do you seriously think they just randomly select all these draft picks without some background checking?
Max King is recovering from an ACL and he will be fine.
Chris Judd for example had major shoulder problems as an underage kid. Look how he turned out.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

Sometimes it seems like that we recruit with a wide eyed belief our medical staff are magicians. What gives me solace is the fact King rehabed at Moorabbin. I also believe Bytel's back injury can be managed and overcome.tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Sat 24 Nov 2018 12:33pmMaybe our medical staff went over him and talked to him like they would have for all our draftees. The thoughts of a Saints supporter can be quite fragile. Any selection we make will have a nagging pessimism about it, let alone ones with the spectre of injuries.

Both Melbourne and Richmond wanted this guy and made late plays to get him.

You seriously think they can be sure it will be fine with some medical checks? You don't think they take risks sometimes? Jesse Smith? Nathan Freeman?!tedtheodorelogan2018 wrote: ↑Sat 24 Nov 2018 12:33pmMaybe our medical staff went over him and talked to him like they would have for all our draftees. Every player we draft is a risk. Pretty sure the club has enough medical expierence and talent to identify Bytal can overcome his injury.
Every single player in the AFL and TAC have had injuries.

Re: PICK 41 - JACK BYTEL - ST KILDA
Disc bulge is a very open term. Anything from a slight bulge to a herniation to a sequestration.
I assume it is the lesser end of the scale:
Then the questiin is whether it is central towards the canal and spinal cord or lateral towards the spinal nerves?
Is it causing nerve impingement and lower limb ain, numbness or weakness?
Is it unilateral or bilateral?
Assuming it is a mild to moderate lateral bulge causing sciatica to one side to the gluteal or down to the back of the knee.....with the right care, and really good core bofy work he can recover well within 6-8 weeks , but will need to maintain really strong core throughout his career....added Pilates classes to his weekly schedule throughout the year and between seasons.
If it is bilateral, or more than a moderate bulge, he will have a harder time of it.
Nee!

Re: PICK 41 - JACK BYTEL - ST KILDA
Lets be honest here, there is no good back injury and his kept him out of playing a lot of games and other clubs passed on him as well. I am not a doctor and I don't know the extent on his injury but seems silly to gamble on an injured inside mid when that isn't the position we need filled.
I just read an article that said it was stress fractures at the start of the season and bulging disk at the second part of the season.
Surely there were some outside mids around this pick in the draft.

weaknesses - Speed and outside game.

Re: PICK 41 - JACK BYTEL - ST KILDA
He had medicals at the combine.
Every club knows exactly where he is at regarding his injuries.
Looks like he trained a bit today.

Re: PICK 41 - JACK BYTEL - ST KILDA
Doesn't really matter what we think.
I trust our recruiters and med staff are confident he can be a long term player. They wouldn't have drafted him otherwise. Heard a rumour he dominated as a 17 year old. Only reason he didn't this year was because of the back issue. He should have gone alot higher in the draft.

Mate, that is the one and only point to this forum… fans discussing their own views on the side. It sounds like you aren't actually interested in what anyone has to say other than those who completely agree with every press release the club spits out.

Re: PICK 41 - JACK BYTEL - ST KILDA
That's not a rumour regarding his 17yo season. He was killing it, which is why he was touted as a top five odd pick. The ONLY caveat on that is that at times his main opposition was off at representative level. That is not enough to cover the sheer fact that he dominated, even with them around.
Have word he is training, but on a modified program. All good as long as nothing gets aggravated.
He's the bargain of the draft IMO. Not just because we took him.

The comment was in relation to drafting Bytel. Plus its true. The staff at Moorabbin know what they're doing in drafting Bytel and his injury. You and others don't.
Geez you look for anything to cause trouble Draggers.

As per all things time will tell. He wasn't expensive but I sometimes feel.like we draft to keep our medicos busy. As for trusting our doctors, these are the same people that signed off off paddy, Freeman, and punctured Carlisle lung, forgive me if I am not optimistic
