It was as obvious as dog's balls and just shows how incompetent Tosser Lyin was.
If I had any say in recruiting we would have taken Judd @ #2 & Bartel @ #5 in 2001 and not swapped #17 for Heath Black and would have grabbed James Kelly with that pick.
Instead of Josh Houlihan I would have taken Dane Swan @ #49 and as much as I liked Goose I'd have secured Stevie J @ #21.

Judd, Bartel, Kelly, Swan & Stevie J on top of our group from 2002 - 2012 = 6 x Premierships.

It's pretty easy being captain hindsight though
Yours maybe hindsight. Mine's not. Said so at the time when we overlooked Darling and Rioli, and have maintained that line ever since. Blind Freddy would have made those selection and I could never understand why we didn't go with them

Now I understand. f****** Ross the flosser tosser overruled our selection guy.

Oh, and I would have selected Judd, which was another obvious f*** up at the time.

St Kilda's drafts 2007-10
2007
Ben McEvoy (9), Jack Steven (42), Fraser Gehrig (57), Eljay Connors (70)
2008
Tom Lynch (13), Rhys Stanley (47), Nick Heyne (48), Alistair Smith (62), Paul Cahill (74), Colm Begley (83)
2009
Nick Winmar (32), Jesse Smith (60), Adam Pattison (64), Will Johnson (77)
2010
Jamie Cripps (24), Sam Crocker (43), Tom Ledger (59), Arryn Siposs (75), Ryan Gamble (90), Dean Polo (103)
That says it all.
2008-2010 = the three wasted years

Terrible recruiting.
Terrible development.
Terrible trading.
Yep. Fantastic analysis. You’ve really looked at that closely with a forensic eye.
2008 Lynch, Stanley and Ray (A trade) No good because at least other clubs got four players in one year.
2009 No good because no other club got just one player. Mark Hutchings who happened to play in a premiership tagging a gun and doing a good job
2010. Yep. No good just one player. Jamie Cripps. Who happened to be a premiership player.
I’ve added up over a three year period St Kilda obtained 5 players. What a disgrace. No other club had that low a number. All other clubs got at least six or more players over that period.
And if you believe all that analysis could you study the reason for global warming as you obviously have a very astute analytical eye?
Mmmmm
You are actually confirming my point.
The players recruited in those 3 years either weren't up to it, weren't properly developed, or foolishly given away.
Hence,
Terrible recruiting.
Terrible development.
Terrible trading.

I now see how you are thinking. I did say in a previous thread I am slow.
The only thing I’d add all clubs are guilty of terrible recruiting or terrible development.
An example.
Geelong’s great draft 1999.
8: Corey 15 Spriggs 18 Bray 21 Foster 31 Chapman 42 Ling 47 Enright.
So using your analysis three incidents of terrible recruiting or terrible development.
(Spriggs, Bray, Foster).
The aspect missing was they didn’t foolishly give away.

Joffa Burns wrote: Mon 12 Nov 2018 9:05am Ross Lyon coached for the here and now and did not develop assimilate the young talent on the list into the side which proved to be a massive mistake. He rolled the dice and lost.

However to blame Ross for the 2018 issues is laughable, thank god some of you are not running your own companies. My favorite saying is the reason your cars rear view mirror is 5% of the size of the windscreen is proportionate to how much time you should spend looking forward and back.

Are we now going to blame our financial demise on Grant Thomas pushing the board to pull put of our Tasmanian arrangement?

In business & sport business you make mistakes, you learn from them and you move forward.
In 23 years of business I almost went broke twice and both times were through my own stupidity, but I took stock on both occasions and fought back.

I would have love to have been posting on this site in 2013 when the club announced its 5 year plan for top 4 finish and flag by 2020, not sure many would have posted at that time that this plan was too ambitious and was not possible due to the Ross Lyon legacy and that Lyon's legacy would still be at the forefront of our 2019 campaign.

To be successful you need the following:
- Professional Board
- High end administration
- Quality coaching & fitness group
- Quality recruiters and developers
- Strong well spread (age) playing list
- Winning culture

The club has failed in too many of these areas over the past 7 years to be successful.
To blame this on Lyon's legacy is naive at best.

I do think one of the big issues of the era was the move to Seaford, I believe the club lost identity and professional culture during this period and the site was never fully embraced by the playing group.

Where were the Tigers and Dogs in 2011?

2018 was a disaster, but at least the club is trying to make the off field changes to become more professional. I don't think Richo is the way forward, but at least we are trying to get the back end right and have the correct support in place to firstly see if he has what it takes and secondly to have the structure for his replacement if that time comes.

2019 is going top be a fascinating and defining year for the club.
In a time when much rubbish gets posted, both here and the media in general, this is the best one I've read in a long while, thank you.

Will add to this simply by suggesting that hindsight is an easy tool to use :)

Perhaps if the club's rear view mirror was slightly bigger, they would have been able to learn more from the past, and as a result would have altered their approach and been more aware of realistically where they were headed.

Nice Rodger, it’s not my philosophy but I like it.

Having owned boats for many years I’d say the reason you look forward when steering your boat is to navigate what lies ahead not view your wake.

And the view from a rear view mirror on a decent sized cruiser or PWC is smaller and less functional than that of a car.

Reality is we kick one more point in the 2010 Grannie and the guy's a club hero and AFL legend, and the only knock on him is why we didn't win two more grand finals (which is what people have said about us under Jeansie).

Ross was a hell of a match day coach in 2008-2010. He was really was at the peak of his craft.

However, he's not a developer of talent. It's as simple as that.

see I would break RL down even further and say he was one hellofa week day coach
Less so match day - he had a formula that he stuck to regardless of match situation
the formula works - dont mess with the formula - the formula aint broke

Until it did
And I believe one of the reasons why in a two horse GF race of the best teams of the year - he was never able to snag it in four attempts

I'd take it even further and say he's a hell of a pre season coach. Drill one game plan into his top 25 players and then just try and keep them injury free for the rest of the year. His selections stunk and never showed an ability to adjust tactically mid year.
