Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
Gary Lyon suggesting playing Paddy in defense.
Paddy would get slaughtered, he does not have the running capacity, speed or athleticism to go with the modern key forwards.
What would happen to Paddy matched up on Daniher, Hogan, Franklin, Kennedy, Darling, Tex Walker, Hipwood, Lynch etc?

Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
Yeah it's either Josh Bruce or Paddy down back, I've thought Josh Bruce was the obvious choice but I can also follow Lyon's logic.
Clearly Richo 'N' Ratta are getting along well as a team if Ratta is keen on supporting Richo's ideas about trialling Paddy down back.

Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
Paddy imo won't make it as a forward if he keeps doing what he is doing. Like Lyons Said some players play there and they have a epiphany about how to play better. He is poor at present so it can't hhurt him even if it is at Vfl level

Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
Sadly I think Paddy and Bruce are not going to contribute much to the Saints- we need another tall mobile forward who can win the contested ball.

Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
In any case, Ratta looks like changing things around. We might see someone down back this year we didn't expect.
I think Membrey would make an excellent HBF (similar to J. Howe when he switched down back) but we need his goal kicking right now and he's a very good foward. Catch 22.
Further, maybe this is why we want Max King so one of our big forwards can go down back eventually.

Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
Big problem with this idea is that we don't need another unaccountable tall in our defence. Carlisle and Roberton have the intercept roles locked down and Austin would be suited to it as well but we need him to be more of a lock down player. No way in hell is Paddy going into defence and shutting down forwards. Bruce has the athleticism to do it but was a shite defender when he played there in the past.

Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
Battle Marshall must play forward to become better forwards. Our backs are our best area and hopefully coffield, clavino, Joyce, Logan improve and be in our starting 22. Bruce moves back to defence and if we get king I'd say paddy will be gone at season end from what we have all seen unless a huge improvement occurs

Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
Our best recent season was 2017 where with 7 games to go we looked a finals bound team...
Lots of suggestions to take our 2 bests forwards that kicked almost 70 goals btw them and move them to the backline as untried Defenders to be replaced by Unestablished forwards
Seems like a winning strategy if ur idea of victory is sacking Richo by rd5

Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
Be fair to say that some of our expert posters were offering up this solution a month or 2 ago. Does that mean that cho is reading this forum and getting ideas off it?Cairnsman wrote: ↑Tue 13 Nov 2018 1:46pm Yeah it's either Josh Bruce or Paddy down back, I've thought Josh Bruce was the obvious choice but I can also follow Lyon's logic.

Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
Wasn't Josh Bruce a defender mostly at GWS? Was he a Dermot prodigy and convinced Scott Watters to recruit him and play him as a forward? Played his junior footy as a forward I think.skeptic wrote: ↑Tue 13 Nov 2018 6:17pm Our best recent season was 2017 where with 7 games to go we looked a finals bound team...

Josh Bruce is the one I'm guessing to most likely transition to a defender based on previous experience and potential to pick the role up quicker than the other options. A swing man is what I see in Josh, Mr Versatile.

Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
At around 6' 4" in the old, bruce certainly has the size to fill a number of key positions, a good ordinary player who can kick a goal. Providing he gets a game, can he take Roberton or Carlisle's spot, I wouldn't think so. I can see him staying a forward and pinch hitting in the ruck. Hope he comes back firing, although we haven't heard how he is going post- injury.

Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
Looking at the thread, some people say Ratta, some say Ratts. But like most rat races, the Ratts are winning.
Seriously though, nobody calls him Ratta.

Think you'll find Josh is 196cm, that's about 6.5-6.6 in the old!!!!! I could be wrong, haven't checked!!!!!chico2001 wrote: ↑Tue 13 Nov 2018 8:48pm At around 6' 4" in the old, bruce certainly has the size to fill a number of key positions, a good ordinary player who can kick a goal. I reckon to coin a successful new nickname for someone it probably needs to be more than one letter different to the nickname they have had for 30 or so years.

Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
Bruce played his whole junior career as a forward and GWS tried to turn him into a defender since they also had Cameron, Patton, Boyd, Lobb, McCarthy and Stewart on the list. He wasn't good, got traded to us and looked like a spud in defence before being played forward and performing well.Cairnsman wrote: ↑Tue 13 Nov 2018 7:56pmWasn't Josh Bruce a defender mostly at GWS? Re: Ratta to shake up Saints forward half
Bruce would be the obvious choice if this has any basis of fact whatsoever.
He is probably the only one mobile enough. The Paddy talk is laughable.
And it is "Ratts". This Ratta bulls*** is just bulls***.

And Richo thought about it apparently. I think Richo was probably just being polite.
Wasn’t Lyon thinking of applying for the Saints coaching job the time the other Lyon got it? We dodged a bullet there.
What's this about Membrey to the backline? Has to be the second dumbest idea I’ve read on here, ever.
