Tom Scully to Hawks for third round pick?

Post: # 1762219Post supersaints2 »

imo Scully still has a bit to offer... but like all other players they gravitate to the top end of town... this is a gift... it's a joke

Players just want to go to sides that are up the top , not to rebuilding clubs

"HAWTHORN is set to sign gun Giants midfielder Tom Scully to a long-term deal — and could even snare him from GWS for as a little as the Hawks’ own third-round pick. (Currently 53)
Despite being contracted to the Giants until the end of 2021, Scully is keen to move home to a Victorian-based club, seven years after he was traded from Melbourne to become a foundation Giant.
Scully on Thursday met with Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson and reportedly soon after passed a medical after missing almost all of the 2018 season with an ankle fracture.
Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph reported on Fox Footy’s The Trade Lowdown said while the Hawks’ current second-round selection is Pick 35, the Giants might be happy to accept Hawthorn’s third-round pick, which is currently Pick 53."

Pick 53 for Scully is his ankle gone?

Also how on earth does Hawthorn pay big bucks constantly to all these players? Frawley big dollars, Mitchel, Jaeger, all on big dollars then be able to entertain getting Scully and Wingard both on massive money, where is Hawthorns Salary cap???

Is it located in the same bag as Carltons?

Surely if they get Wingard they can’t also afford Scully, unless he’s keen to take an almighty paycut?

Back to the days of the late '80s, when the Hawks considered the salary cap "a guide".

I think you'll find players go to destination clubs or stay where they are on less money than non-destination clubs. (Lance Franklin aside)

Instead of wasting time fiddling with perfectly good on-field rules, the AFL needs to address these farcical trades.

I dunno... this is what happens when you can't manage a TPP, you draft badly, you develop badly, and you trade badly... all of which St Kilda has been guilty of for the best part of 10 yrs, to varying degrees. Lyon blew the cap out of the water and drafted the likes of Brett Peake... leaving us with an old, overpaid list that needed an injection of drafted youth. We shouldda still been chasing a flag in 2011, 2012, rather than allowing a hollow out. Instead of showing Goddard and NDS the door, re-negotiate their contracts, and trade off players of lesser value or who were f***ed up for some picks and get kids in (Blake, Gram, McQualter, even Kozi). draft picks are really cheap to pay: Pelican screwed that process up big time. Then we drafted poorly. Now we develop poorly. I think it might have been the Kangaroos or J Brown I remember being talked about - while we have a generation-champ, we wanna be aiming for a flag, not bottoming out and rebuilding. We had Nick Riewoldt play half his career in losing teams... complete waste of a champion. STK's 10-yrs of bad decisions leaves us in a position where we can't even outbid Essendon for Shiel; Scully won't go near us... and we have to pay Dustin Martin style money for Dan Hannebery. Worst decision: not recruiting Ben Cousins. Best decision: Michael Gardiner. Worst luck: Andrew Lovett.

They have the plums to dump club legends on big coin like Hodge, Lewis & Mitchell before the want to retire to free up coin for the next generation.

To be fair we tried the same letting BJ & Dal go to free agency but couldn’t revert the picks to top end replacements.

Fact is our season last year has cost us big time.
If we had made finals as predicted or been close the likes of Scully & Shiel may well have been happy to come to us as we have the coin to pay them overs.

Of course, but when the Shiel race was on, the most the Hawks could scrounge was $900,000 pa. But since they didn't get him, they're now into Wingard, who even with a pay cut, would take at least $600,000 of their salary cap.

If they get Wingard over the line, I just can't see Scully being happy with $300,000 pa.

Surely the AFL must sign off on all deals and ALL deals must be considered fair for both clubs.
Scully is a former No1 draft pick who has plenty to still offer and is not a dud so HOW can the Hawks get him for a 3rd round pick?
This arrangement allowing players to pick a club only and say no to other clubs showing interest is a form of draft tampering hence Luke Ball only doing a medical for Collingwood.

The potential Scully for a 3rd round pick really stinks. I wouldn't be surprised if the AFL steps in as its so out of whack. If he was a FA then the Giants would get a first round pick.

Then we have Cripps from Port warning the Suns not to take Rankine and Lucuisous as they would try get them home to SA ASAP. That stinks also.

The system in some regards isn't working. I'm really unsure how Hawthorn keeps stealing players from other clubs and stays under the cap plus still have draft picks.

Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

Agree with much of above Ted.

The Hawks cut Mitchell, Lewis & Hodge to save $ and regenerate and by media reports always had premiereship players stay for less due to the successful era.

Much like Shiel choosing Essendon for much less money than we offered, players are looking for a successful club and opportunities post career.

Free agency was always going to aid the strong not the meek. Our club needs to become one of the strong and stop being a club that merely makes up the numbers.

The s*** poor 2018 season has hurt us badly in this offseason IMO. Quality is on offer for cheap or reasonable deals and we are not in the hunt because the players are chasing success, a power club and playing in front of big crowds at the G over cash and bottom of the table saints.

It all borders on draft tampering.

It is not hard to get a bargain at an auction if you are the only one bidding - how the f@rk can a player say that they will only go to the Hawks/Saints/Pies etc and then not be targeted by other clubs.

The reason that the bargains occur is that by Scully saying that he will only go to the Hawks means the the other teams wont offer a second rounder, and so Hawthorn get him for unders at 53.

This practice should be forced to stop. Particularly as the only players nominating the Saints are those that no-one else would be bidding on   They should force Shiel/Scully and anyone else who nominated the 'destination' club to come to St Kilda as punishment for a 5th rounder - that will learn them!

Same way Ball went to Collingwood for pick 31

Absolutely - it was draft tampering then - it is the same now

I do not know the solution - maybe if someone nominates then the other clubs can bid and the nominated club can then either match it or the player goes to the club who bid - the caveat would be that you are bidding on someone who says that they would rather be playing for another club.

I don't see this as any different to Father/Son rules though or Academy picks.

We had a worse season in 2000, but look how that trade period panned out! Yes, the coach factor was enormous, but also we had the front to chase these players...remember how adamant the Blues were that Hammill was going nowhere?

You could play the pre-season draft angle in those days as well.
Now they just move to the top club of their choice with free agency like Tom Lynch.

True. Although to (further) compensate for Lance leaving his club ... he does get to snuggle up to Jesinta every night. I think I'd actually pay a mill a year for that opportunity.

Geez, is FA even relevant anymore? Players and agents seem to have worked out the best way to get the deal they want is to hold clubs to ransom with the threat of FA, but bail before their contract expires! Seems FA is for fringe dwellers.

Exactly - our 2018 season has killed us. You have to give players a reason to come and join you (money alone does not work anymore - they're all on great money ... especially the ones you want to attract). North had a great year and have attracted good talent over the past 10 days. Those players will help them have an even better 2019 meaning they're going to be in a good place to again try and woo J Kelly. We've gone ok but nothing to write home about. Our 1st job is to not sh!t in our own letterbox in 2019 in the hope that we can attract some high end talent for 2020 onwards.

I do remember Adelaide saying the same of cooney but that never happened

also on Scully
Greater Western Sydney midfielder Tom Scully is expected to join Hawthorn for a late draft pick. The low level of compensation is recognition of the risk Hawthorn is taking over the state of Scully’s ankle, with the Hawks having initially been willing offer a higher pick before the medical results came in.
Maybe is ankle is unrecoverable?
