Next years captain
Any suggestions?
If Billy Slater pulls on the boots he may make a great leader.
Dan Hannabery is a +200 game All Australian with 3 flags
...and then there's Geary

3 flags?
I'd look at appointing Ross as co-captain this year and phasing out Geary next year. Ross seems like a very serious, driven individual who would thrive with the title of captain.

Hannas, slap captain on him.. knows what it means to be elite and was for a long time. He’s tough, uncompromising and a leader on the field. He’s in the midfield so can lift the side. From all reports an absolute professional in prep

Re: Next years captain
Exactly my thoughts! There are those who will defend Geary as a great clubman, and that's fine, but to my mind the captain should lead by example and Geary's skill levels are at best only average - there are times when his performance warrants being dropped but that won't happen while he is skipper. St Kilda have a lot of half back flankers, younger guys who Geary is keeping out of the team.
With the club bringing in a lot of off field support to focus on leadership development, it is time to select a new group of on-field leaders and appoint a new generation captain, Ross and Roberton stand out.
"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

I don't think a lot on here realise the work that Geary does each week.
Gets the best small forward every week and by and large does a very good negating role
When was the last time a classy small forward kicked a bagfull on Geary
Geary leads by example, too bad a lot of others haven't got his application to a task

Re: Next years captain
Geary is a good leader, skipper and player. I would like to see him play more as a midfield tagger next year. We have enough small backs now.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

Re: Next years captain
Agree on all counts. As a pure leader, he doesn't inspire confidence. I've always described gears as the bloke who's first in the door, sweeps the change rooms, cuts the oranges and is last to leave the same thing your typical best clubman award goes to. Problem is before he was skipper he was also the club prankster. Just don't think he suits the 'prototypical' captains mold. Would much rather see it in the hands of someone like Steele, Ross or Steven with Gears being the spiritual leader down back. If your skipper is making simple skill errors its degrading. The biggest moment I've seen from him was the Tackle on Patton and he absolutely nailed him but you give that big C to someone like Steele who does that on a regular basis its uplifting to see your skipper average 8 tackles a game, 15 contested possessions. I think there needs to be a massive leap from the leadership team but Gears probably shouldn't be the figurehead for it.Stephen Theodore wrote: ↑Sun 14 Oct 2018 3:28pmAgreestjohnc wrote: ↑Sun 14 Oct 2018 1:31pm I don't think a lot on here realise the work that Geary does each week.

Re: Next years captain
Bring back a different variation of the rotating captaincy. Hanners can share the captaincy with a different young gun each year. I would do something like this...
2019 - Co-captains Hanners and Jack Sinclair
2020 - Co-captains Hanners and Jack Billings
2021 - Co-captains Hanners and Blake Acres
2022 - Co-captains Hanners and Jack Steele
2023 - Co-captains Jack Sinclair, Jack Billings and Jack Steele.

Re: Next years captain
Richo didn’t play him like that last season though. Many times he didn’t have a man as opposition coaches would isolate him as he isn’t damaging. Richo couldn’t get it back on our terms which is bad coaching. The new rules might suit him.stjohnc wrote: ↑Sun 14 Oct 2018 1:31pm I don't think a lot on here realise the work that Geary does each week.

Hmm. Interesting.
Great idea if you want to lose by ten plus goals, week in, week out. It might have worked 10 years ago but it won’t work today.
Geary is the wrong type of player for this role; we have Steele and even Ross for that. They can get also their own ball and their disposal is a lot better.
Anyway, like I wrote above, the rule changes will help Geary and keep him where he belongs: in the back line doing a job on a small forward.

Knowing our planning - it will try for a captain but it will end up being a Kapkan and it will be a trap!

Saints man.
Plays Saints footy.
This means kicking out on the full, over a player's head, causes turnovers regularly,
"oh, but he tries really hard though"
